Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (Black) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Customer Service at Digital Tech (bah humbug) Update 11-14-08 Summary: 1 Stars
Buyer beware at Pure Digital
I received from Amazon my (Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 60 Minutes (Orange) on July 31st 2008 Initially all went well and the quality was great and no problems with software. however I noticed a problem getting the camera to start and stop, it continued to worsen and I decided to contact tech support on October 11th 2008. After several email exchanges I was given a RMA# but no offer to send a prepaid label, believing that as it was still in warranty, I paid $7.00 to ship UPS. Than on a web search regarding problems with this item I was amazed at the number of very negative responses to their customer service and did discover that some has been issued prepaid labels and when I challenged them about that was told that it was not their policy to pay shipping, however they would make an exception and attached a prepaid label (now was too late as I has already paid shipping and requested a refund which was denied) I requested was action was being taken on my start/stop problem and the only answer I got was that it was being returned to me. They were unable to save any of my video's (that was not an issue)
So I urge you to consider well before you make a purchase
If you ever need customer service, BE AWARE
I am awaiting return to see if the problem has been fixed
I did receive a refurbed item and thus far it has worked fine, however I did not get a refund on my shipping charges therefore I will not rate this item any differently
Customer Review: You get more than what you pay for! Summary: 4 Stars
First let me say that I bought this as a present for my son's birthday. I did some research on other similar models (Creative Vado & Kodak's pocket vidcam offering). While the others had certain pluses (larger viewing screen, little smaller size, removable media, HD, etc), none impressed me enough to choose them over the Flip video. My son has been using this vidcam for a couple of weeks now and I can't say enough about how good the video quality is for a $100 pocket-sized, on-the-go camera. Even if it's 640x480, who cares? It's quality surpasses the others at the same price and that's what matters.
I like that it uses AA's and I can substitute rechargeable AA's for standard ones. However, battery life was not great. Although, to be fair, I don't know how long my son would leave the device on, so it could just be the teenage paradigm (everything is free and unlimited)...haha, don't want to offend any teenagers out there who remember to turn things off.
To say that he will get a lot of use out of this is an understatement. I'm always afraid when I buy him something that he wants, it will see the light of day for a few weeks and end up in the dark chasm known as his room, but not this device. He's really enjoying it and is getting pretty good at editing his videos to make you-tube-worthy productions out of them.
I would only rate it a 5 if it had upgradeable storage and a bigger viewing screen. Really, to me, it's a 4.5 out of 5.
Customer Review: worth every penny but not quite perfect Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this product. It is easy to use and figure out. Installation of the sytem onto my computer took a few minutes but was easy to do.
One of the greatest advantages for me is the portability of this small and slim video recorder. Okay, so higher end recorders take better video but what good is that if you never take those recorders out of the bag? Any quality video is better then no video at all. This Flip Video is easy to carry around everday so you'll never miss capturing that kodak moment.
I do have some issues with the quality of video when enlarged to full screen on my computer. It's a little grainer then I'd like. I see that Sony has come out with a similiar recorder and I'm thinking I should try that one as well.
The Flip Video has great battery life and is pretty much idiot proof for recording, transferring to your computer, editing and uploading onto popular sites. It's also easy to e-mail to friends and family as long as it is a relatively short video. Otherwise, you will need software to get around the file limitations of e-mail. Another problem I have is the transfer to dvd. It is provided at a fee by Flip Video and Flip Video only. I am still searching for a way around this since I bought the product, I should be able to store the video how I want without having the send it to Flip Video for them to process. I don't like the idea of sending personal videos to a corporation.
Customer Review: Software is not solid! Summary: 3 Stars
I am a Geek. My wife is not. I wanted a SIMPLE camera for her to use that was easily portable so we bought the Ultra (F260B).
The good:The camera works great. Video Quality is better than expected and the ease of use factor is fabulous.
The Bad: The Help Desk people at Flip are not well trained or knowledgeable and the SW is a work in progress. It will NOT run on my PC at all and the support line at Flip indicated they are having major issues with it. The lady I spoke to had no clue except to ask me to do a firmware update that I already did (and had told her so, but I played along and did it again). Her next diagnosis was to ask me to read the Requirements page for the Ultra and to make certain I met them. I indicated I did, but that I was not running a Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz processor, but rather an AMD Athlon that was 2.2Ghz. She said that was the issue. I asked if she was saying that the Camera is incompatible with ALL non-Pentium Processors and she asked me to hold. She came back and said no, but that she had no idea and that the SW was pretty buggy.
Footnote: I have another video editing SW, but it is hard for my wife to use. I have ULEAD Video Editor 8.0. It works perfectly. Simply go to the DCIM folder and copy the video files to the HD and use ULEAD to edit and burn DVD's. So I will keep the camera for its ease of use in recording videos and hope that their SW catches up soon. So much for total ease of use.
Customer Review: Easy to use, great video & sound Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, I am loving my Flip. Intuitive & easy to use. Fits my needs for personal & professional use. I read reviews before I purchased my Flip and people said the sound quality was good. It is! I took video at a memorial service in a church, that is also a gymnasium. I wasn't sure how it would pick up the sound of those talking with the high ceilings & odd acoustics. It was good to my surprise. Overall, I am satisfied and would buy it again.
Yet, there are two things that I dislike: 1) the stop button is sometimes a little fussy. You need to be mindful when pushing stop to make sure it actually stops. This is not always the case. Most of the time I don't have issues. Others have mentioned this as well. 2) All of the software for the Flip is on the camera, which I like. However, it automatically creates a folder for your Flip videos, but it does not allow you to select the location. It puts them in a Flip folder inside the My Documents folder (PC). You can create a folder within the Flip folder to organize your videos the way you want, but I want to be able to download my Flip videos to my external hard drive. My laptop is always running short on space. For now I download and then move to the external drive, but I wish I didn't have to do this. This is the thing I find most annoying! I am hoping that it can be fixed eventually with an update since it is a software issue.
Otherwise I love it! Just what I wanted and needed.
