Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Ultra Series Camcorder, 60-Minutes (Black) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Flip video camera review Summary: 3 Stars
The little red start button is tricky, meaning yes you need
to be careful and know that the camera is recording, It's
kinda hard in the sun light to tell if its running. THere is a red light
on the front of the camera telling you it's recording but this means moving your view finder
off of your subject to see that the camera is running.
The edit program that comes with the camera is easy to use I think it's a no
brainer. But as far as I can see, you can't edit out parts in the middle of your movie
only at the begining or the ending. If there is a way I still haven't figured it out yet.
(ok so I have no brain?)
My biggest disapointment was when I figured out I can't burn my own movies because I don't
have a
DVD BURNER. It's program does give you the option to send it into their company and for 13
some odd dollars
they will send you your movie on a DVD. That sorta defeated my purpose of wanting to burn
them myself.
Mainly I believe this camera was intended for places like youtube, there you can upload your movies for free.
Then share them with your family, and the entire world, if your not careful to make them
private. All in all though It is a fun little camera, for day time moving makeing.
IT takes 2 AA batteries that I think lasted me around 3 hours of movie makeing and watching on camera.
You can view your movies on your own tv but my big screen kinda washes it out a bit. I am thinking to try and Tape
my movies that way with the VCR but I havent tryed that yet.
Customer Review: Great camera for kids to use Summary: 5 Stars
Just before Thanksgiving I bought a basic Flip & an Ultra, to learn about them, thinking I might give some as Christmas gifts. Soon as I started playing with them, my three sons (6, 8 & 10) scooped them up, and along with their visiting cousins (6 & 9) spent most of the day making incredibly interesting videos, some self-interviews, and some of each other playing together. It seemed like they needed zero instructions and somehow knew all they needed to know to make very compelling footage. Today I ordered seven more as gifts for various kids in my extended family. None to adults, thinking they can buy their own (!) but the kids are the ones who should have these cameras. No film costs, just dump the footage to a computer or DVD and go shoot some more. My sons share a bedroom, and I plan to make a little wall bracket for storing a single jointly-owned camera for them -- so it will always be available and accessible to them. They each have their own simple digital still cameras, but I'm sure they'll be fine sharing the Flip. And even if the Flips were somehow much cheaper, I like the idea of having them share just one. Makes it a kind of community device to be jointly valued and shared by the community. If I gave a Flip camera to my sister, she'd allow her kids to use it sometimes, but it'd get stuck in a drawer somewhere and die. And she has a son and a daughter (6&11). Probably have to give them each their own camera. A bit steep compared to what I'd usually spend for two nephews, but based on what I saw happening with the kids here at Thanksgiving, I think it'll be well worth it. -C.
Customer Review: Great Product-Excellent Customer Service from Amazon! Summary: 5 Stars
The Flip Video Ultra is an terrific idea for those of us that don't want to or can't always lug around a normal video camera. I received mine in early March and started using it right away. It also started having problems right away-it was freezing, not during video upload but while taking video causing me to lose several shots of my son's first varsity baseball game. I contacted Amazon on a Sunday requesting an exchange(I figured it was just a bad unit and I would give it one more try) and by TUESDAY! I had a replacement in my hand even without returning the other one yet. The second unit has done everything it was advertised to do and has not had one glitch. The Flip software has worked perfectly on my Windows XP computer(update was already installed on this one) and my whole family has enjoyed the sports videos we have taken. Battery life is excellent and it is very easy for anyone to use. It fits in my pocket and is not not much heavier or bigger than an average cell phone. I also haven't had any problem with the record button being hard to press to start or stop recording, I am guessing that Flip may have fixed that issue some were having. I already had a USB adapter cable to connect it to my computer so it didn't have to hang off the port-no issues there either.
While I am sure there are better quality video options out there, for the price, ease of use and the quality of the clips this little wonder makes it can't be beat. Thanks to Amazon for the amazing customer service-that was way above what I expected--I'll buy with complete confidence with them from now on!
Customer Review: Super easy to use but not ideal indoor video resolution Summary: 3 Stars
THE GOOD: The Flip Ultra is very small (the size of a small digital camera) and it is also very easy to use - just pop in 2 AA battery (included), press the gray on-switch, then press the red record button and you are video taping! There are also switches to zoom in and out. Uploading is super easy - just flip open the built-in USB connector, connect it to your computer and the FlipShare program will automatically upload your videos to your computer. You can then upload them to YouTube or email them to your pals.
THE NOT SO GREAT: The resolution of indoor videos of my two kids are somewhat grainy. The microphone is somewhat weak but still audible. The included soft pouch is too flimsy to protect your Flip. I got a $5 Small Body Glove camera bag from Wal-Mart instead.
NOT SO SMOOTH SOFTWARE INSTALLATION: When I plugged my Flip to my computer, Plug N Play was automatically activated but the software did NOT install. I had to go to the product's website to download the updated version which subsequently installed without any problems.
GREAT TECH SUPPORT: I emailed tech support of my software installation problem late one night and received a reply the next morning. They also have live tech support.
CONCLUSION: The Flip Ultra is an affordable, ultra-portable, and easy to use video camera to capture those precious moments. Indoor resolution is not ideal but hey you'll at least have somewhat grainy videos whereas you may not even have your super-duper bulky video cam on hand.
Customer Review: Mac users beware! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a neat little gadget, pocket-sized and extremely simple to use. While the video resolution is not what one can get in higher-priced and bulkier camcorders, it is adequate for family movies.
There is one serious caveat for Mac users though, which is not apparent until looking at the AVI-format video clips within the Flip software that comes with the camera. PC users can splice selected clips into a movie within this software, view the movie, and then save it to a "Movie Mixes" folder on their computer hard drive. Mac users can only splice clips and view the resulting movie, BUT NOT SAVE IT. In order to make saveable movies from the clips, one must first save the AVI clips to a folder in "My Flip Video Library," open each in QuickTime Pro, and to export it to another folder in MPEG4 format. (Don't forget to use the LAN/Intranet option for the transfer bandwith rather than the default setting, so as to avoid degradation of quality.) Then one must import the MPEG4 clips into iMovie to make movies from them. VERY time-consuming.
It would be SO much easier if, as on a PC, at least one could save movies in the AVI format to the Flip "Movie Mixes" folder. That might be as far as one wanted to go -- the movie would be available for viewing at will. One would only need to translate the movies into MPEG4 format if one wanted, say, to burn a DVD in iDVD (which doesn't like AVI). I'm not a computer expert, but I can't see why the Flip people can't make this option available.
