Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip MinoHD Video Camera - Black, 4 GB, 1 Hour (1st Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Perfect for the value and for what I wanted
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this camera for a foundation that I work for. We needed a small camera we could use as a 'behind-the-scenes' camera, secondary to our main camera at events. Anyways, the MinoHD is exactly what we needed as it's small enough to fit in our pockets and still takes amazing video, indoor or outdoor. Complement that with the fact that it's extremely simple and straight-forward, and even the most technologically uneducated still want to use it. Also, the MinoHD is so small that most don't even realize it's a video camera so it just adds to their comfort while they're being recorded. The only feature I feel is lacking is the fact to pause a clip (because right now everytime you start and stop it creates a new video file), much like we used to do with tape, but then again, that would probably just make it harder to use.

Pros:
-Small and pocketable (fits easily in my skinny jeans)
-Easy to use
-Very good looking
-Simple controls
-HD Quality (1280x720p)
-Not very grainy indoors
-Great software, helps with resizing, as well as uploading to various websites (AOL, Youtube, etc.)
-Fun to mess around with
-Nice carrying case
-Very fast startup
-Great screen even though its so small
-Even though it's so small, it barely picks up any camera shake

Cons:
-Wish I could pause clips
-The obvious, if only the screen were bigger but you can't complain because of how small everything is
-The mic has a tendency to pick up wind, so maybe they could include an external mic slot, or just have it be a little focused

Overall I'm extremely happy with the purchase, both for the price and the quality of the MinoHD

For anyone who needs something small and portable and easy to use, there's nothing better for me to recommend!

Customer Review: Small. . .Simple. . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
There's a lot to like about this little camcorder. It must be the smallest HD camcorder on the market. It's very simple to operate. . . . The quality is great. . . there's not really that much on the "negative" side, but I would like to note a couple of things that would be great if they would change:
1.It would be great if you could add a mini SD card for additional storage. When you're traveling, if you don't have your laptop with you, you're not going to be able to transfer what you've already shot so that you can record some more. It would be a BIG plus if they would add this.
2.You can't replace the battery. If they made it where you could have removable memory and batteries, then you could record endlessly.
3.This is more of an "observation" than complaint, but though it's great that the USB plus pops-up and so you can plug it right into your computer or USB hub. . . . you might want to invest in a cord simply because if something were to happen and something were to hit the MinoHD it could easily damage it.
4.Also, I must say that trying to use the small viewer on the back takes some getting used to. I never feel like I have it just right because it's simply not easy to tell what you're recording. This is simply something you have to live with though, and the price you pay to have such a small device.

It's a great little gadget. Like with a lot of electronics, you have to decide if you want to buy now, and start having some fun. . . or. . . wait around and see if the price drops and if they change it so that you can add memory cards.

Customer Review: computer not fast enough
Summary: 3 Stars

When I would play what I recorded on my labtop cpu 2.8ghz 512mb 50 hard drive. The video would show in frames rather than a video. I emailed my concern to Mino and their customer service said:

Thank you for your response.

The issue with your video playback is likely due to your computer configuration. Please note, the minimum requirements for the Mino HD are crucial to the performance of the camcorder on your computer. The requirements are as follows:

Users Running Microsoft Windows Computers:
* Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz processor or faster
* Windows XP SP2 with 512 MB of RAM, or Windows Vista with 1 GB of RAM
* USB 2.0 port
* SVGA display monitor and video card, with display set to screen resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels or higher and color quality/depth set to 24-bit or higher (to check/change setting, open Control Panel > Display > Settings)
* Windows Media Player 9.0 or later
* Microsoft DirectX 9.0 or later

Users Running Macintosh Computers:
* 1.66 GHz, Intel Core Duo processor or faster
* Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 or Leopard 10.5
* 1 GB of RAM
* USB 2.0 port
* SVGA display monitor and video card, with display set to resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher and color set to Millions or higher (to check/change setting, open System Preferences > Displays)
* QuickTime 7.5 or later

The processor speed needed for the Mino HD is very important for video playback. It appears that this may be the cause of the issues you are experiencing with video playback on your computer.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. It may be beneficial to look into getting a camcorder that is more compatible with your system.

Thank You,

Flip Video Support

Customer Review: Great Camera, When It Works ...
Summary: 1 Stars

This camera is lots of fun. Takes reasonably good footage for its size. Intuitive interface and pre-loaded software. Works right out of the box (battery is charged and everything). Feels kinda like taking an Ipod out of the box.

Problem is, from the start, it worked about 8 out of 10 times I turned it on. That is not acceptable for a product that is designed to capture precious moments. Moments don't wait for you to hold the on to the button for 10 seconds, then wait for a reboot. (Missed a once in lifetime shot of my three year old this morning.)

I received this as a Christmas present (December 2008). It's April 11, and it now does not even turn on. Worse, it has video on it that I can't download to my computer. So three months, and now it's a paperweight.

My advice is to find a different camera.

April 29, 2009 update:

Customer service is atrocious. Only e-mail is available. And they keep asking me to give them "more detail" about it "not turning on." It won't turn on. How do you give more detail? I hit the "on" button and it doesn't turn on.

When it did work, it froze up 20% of the time, meaning I had to stop and hold down the on button for 10 seconds. Half the time it would reboot, the other half of the time it would freeze up again.

Other times, when you hit record it would delay 5 seconds before recording starts (but your left standing there wondering if its frozen or just delayed). Again, that's a big problem for a video camera. You're sitting there with the camera on, then a moment comes you hit record, and the moment is half way gone before the recording starts.

Don't buy this camera. You were warned.

Customer Review: HD in your pocket? Yes! but has a few flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
i will try and go over all the aspects of this camera but still keep it short and accurate so it will actualy help you decide :)

Design - Love it. the camera is sleek, small, minimalistic yet functional.
the only problem i had is the silver string you attach to it so u dont loose it. silver? odd choice.

Interface - this one gets 5 starts from me. the interface is so simple, so intuitive you dont even need the attached manual (which is one page!) this has to be the simplest device of it's kind to operate i have even seen.

Performance - even though it does deliver high hefinition video at 1280x720 but has a major problem with low light conditions, with low light the picture is very grainy and you cant really appreciate the hidef.
in good light condition the picture is very good.
there are a few focusing issues at close distances but for the size of it, this camera delivers great picture quality.
please remember this is not a regular camcorder, it fits in your pocket for a quick shot so dont compare it to your latest sony hidef camera, you traded size for performance.

provided software - i loved that it comes on the device, and not with a cd that you loose. its good software but if you are used to something else (like picasa) not much sense in switching.

overall - great camera, perfect for a "take me everywhere, just in case" HD video camera.
you'll get shots you always said "i wish i had my camcorder here".
