Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Mino Video Camera - Black, 2 GB,1 Hour (1st Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Cute small very basic camcorder Summary: 5 Stars
It's real small which is great, fits in a pocket. Takes clear pictures (I haven't taken any closeups yet). I have to get used to the idea that it's moving pictures (I'm used to still cameras) so my pictures all start out focusing on my feet or floor or something (have to edit that part out). I love the fact that the USB connection is built in; I can just plug it into my computer and not only upload the video but also charge the camera while I'm fooling around on the computer, don't have to keep track of where the cord it or anything (that built in jazz is brilliant). I'm not a good cinematographer and my vids aren't going to be interesting or breathtakingly well shot, I don't expect them to be. I just want to take short shots of people and places and things that interest me. The "software" that comes [in?] the camera allows you to upload the vid in a tighter format for easier emailing out, squeezes down the size vastly so your recipients' emailboxes don't get overwhelmed. It's just a nifty, handy little camcorder that can be tucked in a pocket or purse, whipped out when you need it. I think it's worth the money. No memory card needed or battery replacements. Maybe now my pictures won't come out so blurry because they will be moving pictures for sure.
Customer Review: MAC USERS BEWARE... Summary: 3 Stars
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere and I thought it was important for Mac users to be filled in on the following....
1. The software that comes with the Flip Video Mino does NOT allow you to stitch multiple clips together to make one movie. Only Windows users can do this.
2. I was able to get the Flip Video Mino AVI videos to play in iMovie '08, but not export. When you export the video you get a blank screen with only audio. I had better luck exporting the video from Final Cut Pro.
3. In case you are interested, the codec that Flip Video Mino uses is the 3ivx codec.
There are workarounds for the above issues, but it would have been nice if there was a way to combine clips into one movie right out of the box. Hopefully this will be possible in the future with a software update.
Other then those concerns, its a great product so far and the video quality from the raw AVI file is really impressive.
I found a site called motionbox that will let you upload the raw AVI files that the Flip Video Mino creates and once uploaded you can do some basic editing and combine multiple movies into one. Doing it this way gives you a much higher quality video then what you get on sites like YouTube.
Customer Review: A fun little gizmo Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I attempted to upload a sample of what this item does. However it seems my internet connection speed is being uncooperative. That said.. I have been plaing with this since I got it today. For its itty bitty size, it does a nice job. The picture quality is acceptable and the sound is even good. IT comes with a limited zoom feature that operaties with a simple touch. The playback quality is good and not broken or jittery.
The oprations are simple and fairly idiot proof. Quality of the shot does drop off at close up shots. There is a flip out USP connector which easily plugs into your computer for charging and uploading purposes. IT can be plugged into a TV (connectors provided) and mounted on a tri pod. For being a little sliver of a thing, this is pretty well designed and is definately fun to play with. There is no need to load any software to you computer as the gizmo comes with all that is necessary and will automatically load the driver when u plug it into a USB port.
Customer Review: Mac Friendly! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fun little video recorder and, yes, it's Mac friendly. I received my Flip Mino a couple of days ago and have only had the chance to record, import and view a few short test clips, but so far I am pleased with the ease of use and image quality. Though it may not compare to cameras that retail for four-times as much, I'm satisfied that I got a lot for the price.
Mac Users don't have to worry. As a part-time Mac user I know this much: if something goes wrong with my Mac, I can generally find the answer and fix on the Apple Support message boards for free. Just go to the Apple site, select the Support section at the top, and then search for exactly what you need. I searched for "Pure Digital Flip Mino Support", clicked on the link for iMovie '08 users, and from there was brought to a page full of user-friendly step-by-step fixes for every brand of camcorder on the market. Just scroll down to "Pure Digital" and click on the link to the fix you need. (This is the "codec" everyone keeps referring to in their reviews.) It took all of 5 minutes to finish the process. Mac Users, please don't let this fix prevent you from buying this camera if it's the one you want!!
Customer Review: My Best Purchase in a Long Time Summary: 5 Stars
How many times do you lose the perfect video moment while you are trying to unzip the camcorder bag or check the battery or tape? Been there, done that!! Plus who wants to lug around a huge big deal for quick 30 - 90 sec shots? The days of making huge productions out of family moments are long gone with this thing. Pop the Flip out of your front pants pocket and 2 seconds later you are ready for action. I took the Mino with me on our trip to Yellowstone and never missed a shot. Old Faithful, was caught in all its glory. I took over 60 small 30 sec to 2 minutes family vids that the family will enjoy as long as YouTube keeps running. The enclosed USB cable is such a great idea. The built in flash drive holds 60 minutes of video and the rechargeable batteries never let me down. Plug the unit into a USB port and the on board software starts and I'm working on videos in seconds...all awhile the batteries are recharging and ready to rock and roll once I'm done. Needless to say I'm super pleased with this. Don't get this is you are looking to do far away shots as the zoom isn't really that great. BUT for what it does..it does well. Small, light, fast and ready when life happens.
