Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flip Mino Video Camera - Black, 2 GB,1 Hour (1st Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Easiest, slickest pocket video recorder
Summary: 5 Stars

The easiest way to describe this is to call it the iPod of video cameras. It's got the same kind of slick, intuitive design that made the iPod such a success.

The user experience is so easy that even a child could do it: It arrived fully charged, so I just took it out of the box and pressed the red button to start recording. When I was done, I just plugged the USB connector at the top of the camera into my computer and it saved my videos for me. The USB connection also recharged the camera so that I could go out and shoot another round. The flip doesn't need cords, cables, CDs, instructions, or anything like that. It just works.

The video quality isn't HD, but it's not bad for a device that fits comfortably in a pocket. You shouldn't plan on shooting your feature-length masterpiece on this, but it's great for shooting casual Internet videos with friends or for remembering special moments.

The only complaint I have is that the touch-sensitive buttons can be a little too sensitive sometimes. It's easy to brush your hand across the back and get a series of chirps from the Flip as it tries to figure out why you just pressed all the buttons at once. But so far I haven't had any real problems. I also tend to not use the video-editing software that comes with the Flip, but that's just personal preference.

Customer Review: Expensive Disposable Camera
Summary: 1 Stars

The Flip Mino HD is an impressive little gadget. Its video quality is far beyond what you would expect from such a tiny device, and its small size and intuitive interface make sure it always claims a space in your pocket. I really can not say enough good things about this product's features.

However, I don't recommend buying one. Just four months after purchasing this camcorder BRAND NEW, it has stopped working entirely. It doesn't turn on, it doesn't show up on my computer, and it certainly doesn't record videos any more.

My camera is in flawless physical condition, so I am lead to believe that the innards of these devices are of very shoddy quality. I have scoured the internet and found many others facing the same situation I am. The manufacturer recommends that we place a paperclip in the reset button, which has not resolved the problem for myself or for thousands of others.

The warranty covers an unacceptable 90 days after purchase. This company must have very little confidence in this product to only offer support for 90(!) days. I doubt they are ever surprised to receive angry phone calls or product reviews.

In short, this is an impressive and fun to use product that unfortunately has a lifespan of about 3 months. For that reason, I do not recommend it.

Customer Review: Good Product for the Money
Summary: 5 Stars

I usually don't take the time and trouble to write reviews since most of the time, I'm not so excited about a product that I feel compelled to make the effort. I must admit this is one of the few electronic devices I have purchased (and I've purchased tons) that I've found to be fairly user-friendly. The built-in software is a great feature. The device is fairly idiot-proof. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to operate this. The results are decent. The best feature is its portability. I haven't tried to do much with it other than record and play back. The only thing I don't like is the awkwardness in plugging it into the back of my computer. I should use a USB extension, but I've had problems with electrical shorts, so I don't use any extensions. It's a pain to get on my knees and peer through the dark for a slot only to find that I have to move cables around to get a slot that will enable me to plug in the camcorder. With laptops it's not a problem.
I recorded a school concert with this Flip camcorder and with my Hitachi. The Flip recording came out better much to my dismay. I'm very disappointed with the Hitachi having spent multiple times more $$. While the Flip recording came out fine, I wanted a higher quality recording. Guess I'll have to spring for another camcorder

Customer Review: Perfect for YouTube videos.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this camera for the soul purpose of making videos for my YouTube account. The camera works like a charm in that aspect. The controls and features are very simple to operate and learn and within minutes you can be making movies and transferring them to your computer. There is a simple edit feature when connected to the computer that allows you to start or end the video whever you please, but other then that the only feature is this sort of movie mix which i still don't fully understand but it short it chops your movies down and phases scenes together with the choice of colortone and music.. I found it mcuh easier and more efficient to take the finished video and put it into Windows Movie Maker and play around with it there (note you may have to run the codec file located in the system folder while the camera is plugged in to your pc to get WMM to work with the videos properly). There are several accessories I also own (the tri-pod, the case and usb cables) which i do reccommend, especially the usb cable because it seems rather bad to let your Mino hang from the computer while connected.. It just looks like it may snap off eventually that way. If you're looking for a simple and cheap way to make youtube videos then The Flip Mino is probably the best choice on the market right now.

Customer Review: Easy, convenient, works on my Mac - I love it
Summary: 5 Stars

So many times I've been out with my kids thinking, "I wish I had my video camera with me!" I hate lugging that thing in my purse. Got the Flip Mino 2 weeks ago off of Amazon - love it! I use it with a Mac. No problems. Easy to transfer the files and edit them in iMovie. Tip: If you use Mac, iPhoto may open when you plug in a Flip - it will ask if you want to import the files - DON'T. Use the Flip software that's included on the camera -- it allows you to see all the video clips and then decide which ones you want to transfer to your computer. If there's a lot of movement (I recorded my girls singing in the car) the image quality when you transfer to YouTube is terrible -- but overall, I love that this thing is small (with me at all times) and easy (a monkey could use it!) -- It did freeze on me last night -- Pure Digital's tech support kind of seems like 3 college kids in a cubicle -- but I believe this device has a soft reset -- pin hole in the same hole as the tripod connector. Don't press it too hard or you might lose all your video. (There tech support wasn't too sure on that. Hm?) But the soft reset worked for me. Best thing about Flip is you will capture more moments on video - don't expect HD results - but it's better than not having moments on video at all!
