Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of FiiO E5 Headphone AmplifierCustomer Review: GREAT protable amp! Amazing volume and ergonomics. Rechargable! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought the FiiO E5 since my Samsung Galaxy S phone had a relatively quiet volume. It has an OUTSTANDING sound chip and with the Equalizers I installed I could get very high quality sound out of it but I had to pre-amp it down in volume in order to boost certain frequencies a good 10db or so and prevent clipping. This being said, it sounded great but I wish I could restore the 10db I lost due to my pre-amp for those moments where you feel you want music SO loud nothing else in the universe is audible...you know, the moments which really kill your hearing but make you "wow" at the sheer power.
That being said, here are my remarks about the Fiio E5. Note that I am an audiophile and am comparing it to high-end equipment (my computer is an X-Fi hooked to a Sennheiser 595 Audiophile headphones and my in-ear headphones are also quite high-end).
Pros:
-LOUD. For a headphone amp, this sure AMPLIFIES. 95db or so just as advertised. Note that it is independent of frequencies...you can pump mostly bass from your source device and the FiiO E5 will take that and AMPLIFY it to the 95db or so where a good headphone/earphone WILL rattle your ears (LITERALLY...you WILL feel vibrations). All depends on your source though.
-Ergonomics. The thing is SOLID. Full metal case and feels as if though I can run it over with a car and it will be good. It is "done right" as some may say. Buttons are small yet very accessible and power on/off is designed JUST right. Props to FiiO with the design of this thing. An added bonus is the tiny blue led when on and red when charging. It goes purple when its on and charging :)
-Flat vs Bass mode. It has a little switch that turns on an equalizer. Bass mode works just as the name suggests. It boosts about 4db of ~50Hz bass to your source. It may also mess with other higher frequencies but the effect is minimal. It will not replace an equalizer by any means. All it can do is give you a little "oomph" and "boom" to your music if your equalizer is struggling. However, if you combine it with a bass-boosted EQ, the bass boost can be MASSIVE. I was able to COMPLETELY drown ANY music and produce just intense rattling when I did such a combination. Not that I want to listen to it but it is capable of doing so. As for bass quality, I would say it is CLEAN and sharp mostly. It will depend on your headphones but given good ones, you will definitely hear and FEEL it.
-Added clip is amazing. It clips to your clothes and stays put. You can clip it on your belt and plug headphones there. It will take you a few minutes to find a technique that works for you but once you do, you will be pleasantly suprised. The clip allows you to use your source music player as you would normally, without the amp hanging places or tangling wires.
Cons:
-Hiss. I was expecting this but was still shocked a little. The amp suffers from a static "hiss" when it's volume is turned up but the source's volume is relatively low. Listening like that can become annoying fast. In order to fix the hiss problem you need to max the volume on your input device and turn the amp down some. The hiss is then almost gone. Note that with most music and at anything except very quiet volumes, you will not notice the hiss and can listen with the amp's volume fully up, adjusting the input volume as needed.
-Extra cheap wires. Not really a problem of the amp itself but the wires that come with it are of poor quality. They get the job done but that's all they do. I suppose for $20 you should NOT be expecting more. You also get more wires as you have this amp inbetween the source and your headphones so it can on occasion become messy if you don't familiarize yourself a good technique. Hint: USE THE CLIP!!
-Advertised to last only 20 hours per charge. Yes, the unit is TINY (just a tad bigger than an ipod shuffle). Yes, it has a fully rechargable lithium battery. Yes its fast to recharge. The fact remains though you may likely need to recharge it every 2 or 3 days depending on listening habits. BUY a socket USB adapter. This ONLY comes with a cable...hence initially you can charge it only from computers (shame really). Buy a wall USB adapter or a car USB adapter and you will be set.
For $20, this is a GREAT product. Great volume output, can add bass, perfect ergonomics for portable device, clip, rechargeable battery, stylish. If you need any of those things, The FiiO E5 is the right product for you. If your music device is already loud, the FiiO likely won't make a difference (for example Ipods or computers with decent sound cards). It CAN add a little bass if you're missing that. If you have a QUALITY music player with a good equalizer, the FiiO can take that and turn it into an AMAZING sound setup.
