Customer Review: Fellowes Shredders have safety problems with Auto Feed Sensors
Summary: 3 Stars

I have owned one other Fellows shredder I bought at Costco. The shredder shred paper just fine and as advertised, but the Auto Feed Sensor malfunctioned and quit working entirely.
At first on my older model, it was possible to clean the sensor following Fellows instructions, Q-tip with rubbing alcohol, but it finally just stopped working all together, an electronic failure in the circuitry is my best guess.
I purchased this newer Fellowes Power Shredder because I feel having a non-working safety sensor is bad for kid and pets. But only after about 1-month of occasional shredding the sensor started getting flakey and completely stopped working. I noticed the shredder would turn itself on when I would turn on my microwave which shares a power strip with it which I thought was very strange. I don't have electrical problems in my home and my best guess is that these Fellowes Auto Feed Sensors are not designed well at all as many, many people complain about them breaking.
Yes cleaning them does work...for a while but they have a very nasty habit of just failing after some time, but with the Fellows Power Shredder it just broke, cleaning made not difference.
Mine is new enough I could return it under warranty for a replacement, BUT having to pack it up an pay for shipping the heavy item is just not work the hassle.
Fellows shredder from my experience are solid well working machines with the exception that the buyer should be aware of this safety issue and expect them to become MANUAL type shredders sooner or later.

Customer Review: It's oil, it works, and it goes a LONG way!
Summary: 5 Stars

Until I purchased my Fellowes shredder a couple of years ago, I didn't even know that you needed to oil them. It came with a small bottle of oil that actually lasted me quite a while. But, when I was ready, I ordered this large bottle of oil and keep it in the compartment on the back of my shredder, so that it is always right there for when it is time to empty the basket and oil again.

As I mentioned, this is a LOT of oil and will last a very, very long time for home use and quite a while for office use as well. It comes in a nice, sturdy bottle with a little stopper top that stays on perfectly fine as long as you aren't tossing the bottle around. I like the shape of the bottle because it fits perfectly in the compartment on the back of my shredder. If I wasn't able to keep it right there with my shredder I would probably forget to use it.

I purchased this eleven months ago and my bottle is still almost full. For six-seven dollars, it is a good deal IMO. Maybe you could just buy a bottle of some other kind of oil, but I think it is worth those few dollars to have a bottle with the thin tip for easy application and I don't have to remember to run to the kitchen to get some oil, pour it into something that makes it easier to apply, and then have another dish to wash. Sometimes convenience pays for itself.

Customer Review: EASY TO USE & OVER OILING PROBLEM FIXED
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read all the reviews & yes. I contacted Fellows & Royal they said you could use in a pinch regular vegetable cooking oil, but the main difference is there oil is much more refined & does not in any way smell like vegetable oil. So I decided to buy & see for my self. I did a side by side comparison. The cooking oil is much more brighter, heavier & has a distinctive smell. The Fellows is a much lighter oil. The Vegetable oil will go rancid & you'll start to smell it in time, many people have complained that when oiling the oil come out to fast..Here's the fix don't use a pair of scissors or a utility knife to cut the tip of the cap. Just use either a baby pin or a thumb tack to pierce the tip of the cap & then you can have control of how much oil you need to use. I used a med size baby pin & it's working great for me. FYI: If you have a Office Depot where you live. There own brand of oil is a refined soybean based. For $5.00 for a 4oz bottle the Fellows is a better buy. Not to mention the Engineer at Fellows said that poring oil on a sheet of paper is not enough lubrication & neither are the pre-soaked sheets you can buy. You need to run the machine in reverse as your poring for 10 seconds.

Customer Review: Great Protection for Your Shredder Investment
Summary: 5 Stars

We only buy Fellowes shredders and have found them very reliable. I originally purchased the oil for the cutters directly from Fellowes a couple of years ago; the bottle was smaller and more expensive at the time. I was quite pleased to find this product available from Amazon at a good price and larger bottle.

I think a lot of people buy a shredder, not knowing that it does need some maintenance to keep it in top shape. Besides not overloading your shredder's capabilities or shredding material that you shouldn't, the next best thing you can do to protect your investment is to regularly lubricate the cutters. This reduces wear, noise, and can prevent the teeth from breaking.

Be sure to read the instructions for your particular shredder, however, about the type of oil to use and the frequency. You may be tempted to use other types of oil you already have around your house or WD-40 or something, but many of those things are flammable and will only serve to damage your shredder or worse.

As another reviewer said, be careful when cutting the tip on the bottle because if you make it too big, the oil will be harder to control.

Customer Review: Works great!
Summary: 5 Stars

Shredders need lubrication! I found out the hard way when our Fellows shredder started acting up (not running items through, stopping, reversing, et cetera). I always thought it was a bit of bunk, needing to lubricate shredders, but it's true, they do need it.

When you think about it, paper is drying. It absorbs oil, water, etc, so when you run it through the shredder, it's going to eventually suck up any lubrication on the cutting wheels.

You can use vegetable oils, but that is so messy. This product comes in a large bottle (suitable for an office environment) with a spout that can be cut so that just the right amount comes out. And it works great, just running a small bead on the wheels.

The shredder, which was balky before, now works as God and Fellows intended. Fellows makes a superior shredder, and their oil keeps the machine in good shape.

This is a keeper and is highly recommended! Shredders are a must these days, and good ones are expensive. It's worth a little bit of money to keep it going great.
