Customer Review: It's a pretty good shredder

I replaced a small, cross cut "Executive Disc Shredder" with this one. After using it for a couple of weeks, I'd say this product has its merits, but it's not up to a 5 star rating, as there are a couple of shortcomings. First of all, this unit really shreds paper well. Compared to the cross cut shredder, the Fellowes shreds paper extremely fine. You really need to keep a plastic bag in the bin to catch the pieces. You can re-use the bags, though. I've used the same bag for 7 or 8 bins full so far. Even so, some bits of paper still find their way outside the bag. You'll have to brush out the bits from time to time. Unfortunately, there is no brush supplied with the unit. I've had to use the one that came with the old shredder. Important note: the shredding is so fine, there is paper dust - enough that if the shredded paper gets moved around a bit, the dust can rise up and affect those with breathing problems (bronchitis, asthma). Suggest wearing a dust mask before handling the shredded paper in this case.
As noted by others, the unit has a lower, softer sound than a standard shredder, but it is not "quiet". Also, as noted by others, the instructions are minimal and don't cover the unit's operation completely. There are lots of lights to indicate status and ample controls. The unit has lots of safety features. I can't imagine anyone getting hurt by this unit.
The first drawback is shredding disks (CD/DVD) seems more an afterthought here. It cuts them only into strips. Nowhere near as secure as my old cross cut shredder, and definitely not in keeping with the security level established by the paper shredding. However, you can use the tray to catch the strips and then use a scissors to finish the job, if you want higher security. Fortunately, it will finely shred credit cards, if you insert them in the area specifically marked. Note: don't insert the card too far over where the roller checks the thickness - the card will exceed the limitation and the unit will not start.
The second drawback is the large gap between the mouth of the shredder and the cutters. You have to get the paper well in there before it will start. When you include the pressure of the roller at the mouth, this means if you have a thin, single sheet of paper, it may be nearly impossible to insert it far enough, without folding or adding something else along with it, to get it far enough into the unit so it will start. And if you touch the mouth, it will stop instantly, which is great for safety but further exacerbates the issue of trying to insert thin single sheets.
Overall, the unit is well made and I expect to use for serious shredding for a long time to come.
