Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fellowes P-57Cs, 8 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder 3205701Customer Review: Don't recommend Summary: 2 Stars
I'm reviewing this product because there are so many positive reviews out there, and unfortunately my experience has not been positive. I buy based on reviews and was expecting a pretty solid product based on the extremely high ratings most other customers have given this product.
My primary and most frustrating issue is that the unit does not always switch on as it is supposed to. I usually have to play with both switches 5-10 times and run it in reverse a few times before it will come on and shred a single sheet of paper. There is no rhyme or reason to this malfunction. It has been doing this ever since I took it out of the box. Every time I think it has given up the ghost for good, it finally starts working. Then we get to problem number two--there is no way it will shred 8 pieces of paper. I have had success with two sheets, as long as they are flat, but even three is pushing it in my experience. We just bought this unit to shred my small family's junk mail, but unfortunately even that process is more tedious and time-consuming than it should be. I would not recommend this shredder to a friend.
Customer Review: Plastic spacers on the 57C Summary: 1 Stars
According to Amazon I bought the 57C shredder on August 2, 2007. I will not shred 8 pages. To avoid jamming I usually shred just one. And its dbetter to cut away the plastic windows on junk mail. By getting in that habit the shredder was very useful to get rid of my junk mail and provide bedding for by rabbit. The shreds finally wind up in the compost pile and then to my vegetable garden.
The main difficulty I had was that the pastic spacers between the metal shredders break causing the missing "teeth" to pile up with a bumpy pile of shreds that have to be removed by hand with a dental pick. I continued to use the shredder in this way, by feeding paper from the other side of the feed. But now more teeth are missing and it really is quite useless. So now I am looking for a new shredder and find that there aren't any with the same shred size as the 57C.
My rabbit really doesn't like tiny shreds. He likes nice big fat fluffy shreds.
Very disappointed to lose my 57C. It would have gone on forever if the plastic teeth did not break.
Customer Review: Great so far Summary: 5 Stars
We've only used this shredder a few times but the first time was to catch up on the pile of old bills waiting to be shredded since the old one burned out. It was also a Fellowes and lasted several years. I read a lot of reviews and compared prices of different brands. Things have changed! We chose this one because we felt like it was a good price for the capacity. Our old one was only a 5 page shredder so it's a step up.
The automatic feed feature is great. Our old one did not have that so the motor ran until you turned it off. That really helps extend shred time before it has to "rest". This lid is also much easier to lift off and you can tilt it back to push the contents down.
It seems every review I read talked about shredders not taking the page capacity stated. Paper comes in so many weights that's going to vary. The important thing is how easy they unjam. This one clears quickly every time by using reverse. We use the oil as recommended too. If something does happen, I feel I can count on customer service based on other reviews.
Customer Review: Not a bad Shredder if you want a small office one for home Summary: 4 Stars
This guy isn't too bad for us to use at home. I use it for shredding credit card apps, etc. Some of the reviews are accurate, if you shred continuously for 10 minutes, it will shut down. The manual clearly states that it will shut down to cool down so it won't over heat. For us, considering i shred junk mail with our info on it on a regular basis, it isn't much of an issue. It really will handle a full credit card application marketing mailer with ease on the first few rounds without breaking down the contents, but after 5 minutes it does slow down a tad when it gets warm. I like that you can see through the front clear window to see the fullness of the trash can, or take the front window off for easy access to the can. it also has a nice tilt feature that allows you to tilt the top to add trash without having to take the front clear off of the top of the unit. It does an excellent cut to where you can't put the paper back together, unlike the hold single straight cut shredders. I recommend it for small shredding for your home office, but not anything heavier.
Customer Review: Fellowes 32057 Powershred P-57Cs Shredder Summary: 1 Stars
This was a replacement for (what I thought was)a cheap Office Max shredder. I bought a Fellowes based on its name. It has turned out to be a terrible shredder. It cannot handle a promotional mailing (ie. credit card offer, etc.) without jamming. Therefore I have to tear the envelope open and feed the contents a page at a time (despite its claim to handle 10 pages at a time). This is terribly time consuming. Additionally, after a number of documents have been fed, and one uses the 'Reverse' feature, it becomes solidly jammed, and won't operate in either direction. This is because the paper pieces remain within the cutters and jam against the shredder frame when reversed. It took 10 minutes to dig the paper shards out because they had jammed so tightly against the frame/feed opening.
The $30 Office Max shredder had none of these problems. I'm just ramming the Run/Reverse switch back and forth every time in order to prevent jams. I know this will shorten the life expectancy, but it's the only way this shredder operates usefully. Won't be buyin' another one!
