Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fellowes P-57Cs, 8 Sheet Cross-Cut Shredder 3205701

Customer Review: Fellowes Powershred P-57C
Summary: 4 Stars

The reviewed item does do a good job on shredding, but I have yet to test it to a full sheaf of eight pages (the manufacturer's capability rating) because the recently acquired unit is a replacement for another Fellowes shredder (P-54) that internally disintegrated. I best explain that comment by saying that the plastic holding grip on the underside of the shredder shattered due, I believe from fatigue or maybe just normal wear and tear. Nonethe less, the replaced shredder, was, itself, a replacement for the first identical shredder. The replacement shredder was to replace the first shredder due to a failure in the electronic/electrical control circuitry of the originally purchased item. To sum all of this, three shredders have been in my office, and two of them failed. This current unit does seem to be performing well.

The major criticism of the current (and the previous units) is that the size of the basket that is used to capture the shredder material could be about twice as large, especially since the new shredder basket is the same size as the previous shredders, but is supposed to be capable of shredding fifty percent more paper (i.e., more frequent disposal occasions). A consideration in my purchase was based upon price and capability, and I am not unhappy of my choice. Now, I am hoping that if anything goes wrong with the current unit (one year manufacturer's warranty - keep your receipt and warranty information) that the event occurs during the first year.

Customer Review: Has some issues
Summary: 3 Stars

Specs say it can handle 8 sheets. If you try more than 4 sheets, it slows to a crawl and sometimes stops. Even with 4 sheets it has a hard time and tends to make long strips (6" or longer) rather than confetti.

It does heat up fairly quickly with moderate use (a few minutes of constant use). It stopped on me once and I had to wait 20 minutes before it would start again.

The SafeSense sensor doesn't seem to be much of a problem (or a benefit for that matter). Unless you are really careful, you do tend to touch it while feeding paper, so the shredding stops momentarily, but then it starts right back up again. But all that starting and stopping probably causes the motor to heat up more quickly.

The cutters don't seem to clear themselves very well, which causes it to jam fairly often. I have to stop every couple of minutes and do the forward-reverse dance to clear out the paper from the cutters so I can continue. Even shredding only 1 or 2 sheets at a time, it sometimes goes really slow then speeds up then slows down again, so I can tell the cutters are getting clogged constantly.

I like the way the motor housing lifts off the basket, it makes it really easy to empty the basket.

Overall, it isn't a bad shredder. I wouldn't do it over again, though. For very light shredding (maybe 20 sheets max, feeding them 2 or 3 at a time) it would be OK. Anything more than that and you are asking for a headache.

Customer Review: Decent Shredder for Low Cost
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this shredder after reading numerous reviews. It was on sale for $42 on Amazon, which was about what I was willing to spend, since I have a small home office and don't need to shred on a regular basis. I would not recommend this shredder for someone who needs to shred large amounts of paper on a regular basis. First, it does fine shredding 3 pages at a time. It is not a confetti shredder, but makes strips small enough for me to feel comfortable with the security level. The bin is solidly constructed (not sure what the prior reviewer meant who said it was wobbly -- it's made of thick black plastic, so it's not flimsy). Although the manufacturer photos make it look as though you can empty the bin by flipping the top up, that is not the case -- you can flip the top up to check the shredded paper level perhaps, but to empty it, you have to remove the shredding mechanism, which fits snugly into the bin. Because it has a shredding motor within it, it is a bit heavy (10-15 lbs.) to remove, but doable most able-bodied people. The one thing that is a little quirky is that there is a small lever inside the edge of the top part of the shredder that must fit just right onto the top edge of the bin or the shredder won't turn on -- there is a small but audible "click" when the lever inside the top half is successfully engaged. IT just means that you have to make sure to seat the top properly into the bottom bin, which isn't a big deal to me. A decent shredder for $42.

Customer Review: Good investment; good gift.
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this paper shredder for my husband as a Christmas gift last year, 2007, after reading all of the reviews on this shredder in Amazon. I read other reviews on paper shredders (these reviews are really helpful) and this is the one I kept coming back to that appeared to be what we needed. We have had a large quantity of shredding for over 17 years, I bought a Fellowes Paper Shredder at the time that cost more than this one. It did not recover from a paper jam last year.

This equipment has surpassed my expectations regarding its appearance -- it looks much better than the picture. It is set up in my husband's business office, it is easy to carry to other parts of the house and use. It is much quieter than our last one which is nice; our first shredder did not have a basket; this one does. I have been shredding 5 sheets at a time comfortably and have not tried the 8 sheets that is recommended on the box. I am used to having a forward and reverse button. It is the position of the button in "front" of me on top of the shredder in front of the shredder teeth that is unfamiliar to me. I was used to having the shredder button on the top to the "side" of the shredder teeth. Evidently this convenience is for the left or right handed, and just as safe. My first shredder single-cut; this one cross-cuts. I like the idea of having a "jam free" paper shredder. Fellowes Powershred Shredder 32057 P-57Cs, is a great product and I recommend it.

Customer Review: Very Good Purchase
Summary: 4 Stars

I did a fair amount of research before purchasing this shredder. The child-safe finger feature was most important to me, as was the durability. After the first few uses the plastic shield inside the shredder which ostensibly guides the shredded paper into the wastecan fell off, but the functioning of the shredder doesn't seem to be affected. Aside from this minor issue, the shredder seems solidly made and has been excellent--it rarely jams and when it does it's easy to clear with the reverse feature. Its recovery time is very reasonable when you're working it hard (take a break yourself, too!). It's not as noisy as my old shredder. It is somewhat messy to empty, however, since the shreds are small, but that's a good thing when you're looking to keep identity theft at bay. I was pleased with how quickly it arrived. I would definitely purchase this shredder again for moderate household use.
UPDATE: Still going strong on June 1, 2009.
UPDATE: August, 2009. Of course just after I wrote my June update, the gears broke under extra heavy use. I called Fellowes customer service and ordered a new gear kit at $18.25 including shipping. Works like new now, and I guess I'm not terribly upset given the years of service it provided before needing a spare part. My advice, though, is to follow the manufacturer's recommended occasional oiling procedure found in the instruction manual (I never oiled) in order to avoid this problem.
