Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is a home or home office machine, and not meant for a professional office environment. I got this to finally do away with the thin paper Hot Key Lists I had made for my various software applications. I was printing new ones out frequently because regular paper is just not meant to stand up well to frequent handling. I can also now laminate my many recipe cards that I have collected over the years and that are currently stored in flimsy plastic covers that have also teared and begun to look ratty.
The Fellows Mars ML 125 is great for that and much more. Here are the Pros and a few Cons as I see it:
PROS:
- Small footprint: The entire machine measures only about 20" (length) x 7" (depth) x 4" (height) and can therefore easily be placed on a desk or small table. For something that can laminate sheets up to Menu size (12 x 18") this is really not too big.
- Once the machine is heated up, lamination is quick and clean, provided one took care to place the item into the laminating pouch (and then the laminator) straight, and not at an angle.
- This laminator works for photos and letter-size documents up to menu size items (as mentioned above), making it quite versatile for many different projects.
- The unit does not get too hot on the outside. While it does get quite warm, it can still be touched without fear of injury - this might be important for people with small children.
- It features a non-skid bottom which also helps with safety.
(The rather minor) CONS:
- While turned on, the machine is rather noisy. This might not be bothersome to everyone, but to me the noise is grinding on my nerves a bit, as it has a slight vibrating quality to it.
- Heat-up time is quite long, according to the manual it is about 8 minutes and that sounds about right. On the upside, once it has reached its operating temperature, it can be turned off and then turned on again after, let's say, 15 minutes and is still back up immediately. This is because the complete cool-down time for the unit is 1.5 hours, so it cools down rather slowly.
- There are no physical "paper guides". The respective markers are only painted on the machine vs. the way it is with most printers where one can slide physical guides to fit the paper size. While I have not run into problems yet with guiding the laminating pouch into the unit, I would prefer to have a bit more guidance here than only those painted-on markers. But that might just be personal preference.
- 5 mil pouches should best be run through the machine twice to get a better result. But I use mostly 3 mil ones and they work fine on the first run.
SUMMARY:
If you have papers, photographs, recipe cards or other documents of various sizes you've always wanted to laminate, this is a good unit to get. I especially like it because it can be stored away easily and does not take up too much room in my already crammed home office. One note: As of now, the unit emits a certain plastic-y smell when turned on. I am hoping that this will go away with continued use because it does give me a headache. Other than that: Quite satisfied.
