I'd purchased a brand new Scotch TL901 Thermal Laminator 2 Roller System a couple of months before Amazon Vine offered this unit to me for review. As it happens, I had not even opened the box on the laminator I purchased so I thought I'd offer a side-by-side comparison of the two, fresh out of the box. Physically, the two machines are of similar size with the Scotch model having an input tray that increases its footprint. They were built to similar quality standards with similar materials. As they are both offered in the same lower end home office price ranges, I feel that they are a good pair to compare.
The initial warm up took 7 minutes and 15 seconds for the Fellows unit, while the Scotch unit took an extra 15 seconds. Both operated very quietly with self feeding rollers, though the Scotch unit started a light humming sound after it had warmed up. Both initially emitted a light smoke/burning smell that dissipated after a while. Both units are wide enough to handle letter sized laminating pouches. I used 3 mil bags from both companies in both machines. The pouches performed similarly with waves in the plastic happening in wide sections where there was nothing inserted in the sleeve. The Fellowes pouches did impress me as being a little better quality than the Scotch pouches and the end result was slightly thicker and a tiny bit more firm feeling to me. The Fellows machine was slightly slower than the Scotch machine, but not by more than a few seconds for a full sheet pass.
Both units advertise that they operate up to 5 mil, as I only had 3 mil pouches to play with, I can not comment on effectiveness with thicker pouches. I can tell you that I used thicker card stock as my test materials with no issues. The Scotch brand has some nice features that the Fellowes doesn't offer, such as the ability to accommodate a maximum of 10 mils. Additionally, the Fellows does not have a feeder tray (not really a big deal), nor does it have a release lever or thickness adjustment control.
The Fellowes is a very nice light purpose machine for the home office or crafter. It is simple to operate and takes up little space for storage.
