Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Fellowes MS-460Ci 100% Jam Proof Micro-Cut Shredder (32406)Customer Review: Now THAT is a shredder. Summary: 5 Stars
I have only just received this shredder today and if my opinion/experience changes, i'll revise the review, but after the maiden voyage, i like it so much i'm inspired to share. This shredder was really expensive by my standards, almost $400 with tax, for a personal home shredder for one person. But i just moved, from my apartment to my house, and i have four 30 gallon trash bags of shredding that i've lugged with me on this move, and they were in the back of my car because i was going to take them to a shredding place and pay $12.50 per bankers box to have it shredded, and it piled up so much because my previous attempts as having a shredder to use regularly had failed, they wore out, they had various problems, and i had to learn by experience what i need and what i want and how much that costs. It apparently costs almost $400. I want a shredder that can handle a lot of sheets of paper, like envelopes of convenience checks offers, i want a shredder that is secure, a micro-shredding shredder, i want a shredder with a large enough bin so that i don't have to empty it too often, i want a shredder that is on wheels.
I still have a desktop Staples shredder that kind of still works, but it can't help me with the four 30 gallon bags. I had been driving around with them in my car, not able to find time to take them to the shred place, which is out of the way; then i took them out and they're now sitting in the garage.
My last attempt to get off cheap was a couple of weeks ago. On Amazon i bought the highly regarded (by most reviewers) $61 Fellowes W-11C 11 sheet shredder, even though i knew i probably needed castors and a larger bin, but i had been frustrated in not being able to find a multi-sheet capability in the larger shredders in my price range, which was around $200-$250 max at that point, so i decided it was worth a try. It did convince me that i needed to spring for the money for the MS 460ci, the only home shredder that had a large sheet capacity, micro shred, fairly large bin and castors. In this particular brand that is. I was committed to getting this brand based on reviews. The W-11C was simply a bad experience, a real struggle to use, it did handle its 11 sheet capacity but not always, jams happened, and then it became necessary to deal with the awkward difficult task of removing the heavy shred cutters/motor part and picking out the rather large shredded pieces, which got worse after using the lubricant paper, and messier, and it was too heavy to not have castors, even though small, it was top heavy and hard to move around.
So, i ordered this almost $400 home shredder and it arrived today. I found it immediately easy to set up, easier than the W-11C, it moved easily on the castors. It took me a minute to figure out that there were two power buttons, at first i thought something was wrong when the first power button didn't get it to turn on. I took the credit card box out. I have it handy if i need it. I started shredding about half a bankers box of old shredding that was inside the house and fully enjoyed doing it, I had to learn how to relate to the shredder, the way it will shut off if the fingers get onto it, i'm not used to that yet, so when it happens, i always think it's jammed, but it comes right back on by itself, i dont need that feature, but it's a nice touch, and not a problem.
Other reviewers said it was somewhat inconvenient that the paper has to be pushed in a ways before it starts shredding. The W-11C was the same, and i quickly got used to it so that by the time i got the MS 460ci, it seemed normal to me, and i don't really notice it, not a problem.
The shredder did indeed take full envelopes of credit offers and statements and seemed to especially enjoy cardboard things. Sometimes the jam proof feature would refuse to accept papers that were too thick, and that takes getting use to, but it's no different from any other shredder i've used in having its limits on how much it will take in, and is better than the others because instead of getting the paper halfway through and stuck, it won't let it in in the first place. It did let paper in half way and then stop a few times, i'm not sure if that's because my fingers were too close or it was too much paper, but it managed to straigten itself out.
I like it a lot. To the point where i finished all the shredding in the box, even though i had just driven for about 90 minutes in heavy traffic and rain to get home and it was past dinner time, and then after dinner , i was frustrated and disappointed that i didn't have any more large envelopes to shred. Actually i do have the four 30 gallon bags of shredding in the garage but didnt' want to go out in the rain.
It seems like a very good quality mechanically robust shredder, well designed, stable, i love the micro shred and the large bin (compared to the W-11C). After all the shredding i did, it's not half full yet, the window is nice, i can see how full it is. I think and hope this is going to be a keeper--if it continues to work, and i'll keep testing it out to make sure it works because for that price, i don't want to just have to toss it like the others if it becomes harder to use than it's worth and my shredding starts piling up again.
I can't say exactly how long i shredded for, probably between 20 minutes and a half hour, i shredded steadily without a break and it did not heat up and shut off for cooling. It was plenty of time for any shredding i will be doing under normal conditions.
Update 3/30/11
I've had it for a week now and used it to shred built up shredding over a couple of years. For my needs, this shredder is fast, hard for me to keep up with when i'm trying to continuously feed it; it has reached its use limit a couple of times and goes into its automatic 25 minute rest. Then, it can start right back up again and go to its limit. The quantity of shredding i've done has amounted to several bin emptyings, about 5 or 6.
One of the things i love about the shredder is that between the size of the bin and the compactness of the shredded paper in the bin due to the micro size of the pieces, it's a very long time between bin emptyings, it takes a lot to fill it up. It has worked flawlessly. If it starts to shred something and then 'decides' it's too thick, it stops and then usually it starts up again in about 5 seconds and tries again, and more often than not, it finishes the shred; sometimes it's necessary to push the reverse function several times to get it to release the document. I like this much better than my other shredder when i had to pull the paper out of the cutter blades with my fingers. With the MS 460 ci, by pushing reverse and forward, alternating, it gradually either released the paper or manages to shred it.
For me, it's a very well designed appliance, simple and straightforward, sturdy, solid, and so effective. I had thought i would have to sacrifice number of sheets capability per pass for microshred, but it has been able to shred almost every envelope i've tried, statements, credit offers, bills.
I've found what another reviewer said to be true, the shredding creates a very fine dust that floats in the air for a while, because of the microshredding effects. I'm not sensitive to dust, but i like to avoid breathing things that aren't meant to be breathed as much as i can. This has led me to wear a dust mask when shredding a couple of times, and i try to remember to close the doors to the room where the shredding takes place and contain the dust in there. There is a (not offensive) odor of shredded paper that stays in the air for hours.
but this is because i'm shredding large quantities of receipts, bills, statements and various kinds of credit offers piled up over a couple of years so i do a lot of shredding in one sitting. After i finish with this phase, my shredding will be minimal and i don't expect to have the dust at all, except when emptying the bin, and i've learned to just be careful with that, not to shake up the shredded paper, which sends the dust into the air, and when i empty it, i'm mindful and avoid breathing while being near the trash can, but it's not that bad.
One thing that i've worried about is using the Ativa lubricant sheets that i got at Office Depot to clean and lubricate the blades after each bin emptying. Fellowes provides a small container of vegetable oil to lubricate the cutters with, this comes with the shredder. I like the idea of lubricating/cleaning by running special sheets through the shredder that were designed for this purpose. Reading the miminal amount of info on the Ativa 'Dual Purpose" sheets packaging, i see that they don't contain any kind of oil. Rather, they clean the blades using a powder of some kind. I've been unsure about whether this is OK for the shredder, considering that Fellowes doesn't market any themselves, nor mention them in the maintenance section of their user guide. I need to call them and ask if there's any reason not to use the sheets. I was doing my shredding on the weekend and they weren't open. I need to call them tomorrow.
Some reviewers had some criticism of the plastic bin liners provided with the shredder. I haven't used these, or any liner. I haven't had any problem using the bin without any lining. It's lightweight and easy to take out and put back in, so i just carry it to the trash can outside, open the lid, put the shredding in and close the lid.
Update 4/16/11
I've been using this shredder for routine day to day shredding as well as long intensive shredding of old document build up for about 4 weeks. The more i use it, the more i love it. It does everything i need a shredder to do and does it well. The longer i use it, the better it works because for me, there has been some adaptation and learning about how it works. I didn't read the manual on operation though i did read the upkeep/maintenance part. A couple of things I've learned: if i put an envelope with folded over paper in it, like a credit offer, that is very thick, the shredder will light up with all the colors, which means that the document is too thick for shredding, but i've found if i just leave it alone for 5 seconds, it often will start shredding and will do it successfully, in other words, at first it seems like the shredder can't handle the thickness and i was opening these envelopes and taking the paper out and making them less thick, but I've found that sometimes, often, the shredder can handle the thick envelope of stuff but it needs to 'think' about it for a few seconds first. Another thing i've learned is that the first time i put credit cards through, they come out in insecure strips, easy to reassemble, but running those strips through the shredder turns them in to microshred.
When i got this shredder, i didn't think it was necessary to get a microshredding shredder, but after using this one, i would not bother with something less secure because the shredded documents are not that hard to reassemble from the crosscut and strip types. True, most of us would probably find reassembing the pieces tedious, but imagine a meth head sitting in their apartment at 4 am after going through a few dumpsters and full of energy and ready for a challenge. I use this example because in 2004 i was a victim of identity theft and months later when i finally tracked down the right police department that actually arrested the guy and his girlfriend and took their computers after he tried to cash a bad check in a bank, the police (in another state across the country from me) told me that when they went to his apartment there was a meth lab there. And the back of his car contained huge piles of visa card receipts with other peoples' names on them.
So, using this microshredder makes me feel protected at least in this way, where i don't have to worry about my various account numbers and other identity stuff being accessed through my trash. That's why i had three full 30 gallon trash bags of piled up shredding to do, because i hadn't found a shredder that worked well enough to do day to day shredding (they only lasted a short while) so since i couldn't throw it in the trash, it piled up under my desk.
The only thing that remains to see now about this shredder is longevity. It cost a lot more than i had thought i was going to pay and i definitely expect it to last a lot longer than the under $100 shredders i've had before. If it breaks down, i'll update my review. But so far, this is one of my favorite purchases of gadgetry/tools/electronics, in the top 5 or 10. It makes me smile when i see it.
