Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Eye-Fi Pro X2 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-8PC

Customer Review: Unstable, very difficult to use and lots of bugs, but it works
Summary: 2 Stars

Who am I? I am a professional photographer since 2003. I also design and customize wordpress and flash websites. I would hope that I am considered computer savvy.

It took me about 16 hours to get everything to work properly across 1 wireless network via router, and 2 more ad-hoc networks on seperate computers. It sounds ridiculous, maybe I'm stupid. I spent several hours on the phone with tech support, who was very nice and easy to understand, they were seemingly competent and intelligent, thus the 2 stars instead of one.

What I wanted to do:

-I bought a 11.6 nice netbook and the 8gb pro x2 to use on location for clients to review my work as I shoot it. This way they are not hovering over my shoulder trying to get a peak at my camera completely disrupting the flow and breaking down the creative process.

It sounds simple in concept, however I have very specific needs and it just so happens the way this product and software are configured make it a complete nightmare.

Ultimately it comes down to software. The software is flat out TERRIBLE. Did I mention it was TERRIBLE? Because if I didn't....

Basically if you are going to use this in your studio via a router, and have internet connection, it sould get a 4 star rating. The reason behind the pro X2 is to use it in ad-hoc without connecting to a router or the interenet, and for those purposes its not thought out, at all.

Here is a recap of my experience:

I open box, there is a pretty thick book, I read instructions, it literally says:

Step 1: Connect the Card Read to Your PC or Mac
Step 2: Install Eye-Fi Software

The end of instructions, then the warranty, then the compliances, which is appropriately 10 pages long.

Hmmmm, ok I'll plug it in. Navigate to the "Start Here" folder click the icon and:

Simultaneously it says do I want to install the eyefi software and update adobe air.

I have not updated my adobe becasue I do it all manually and was goign to do it along with adobe suite, so I clicked no to air.... bad choice, the initial install of the eyefi software could not function appropriately, it was having a real hard time recognizing the card to begin the initialization. Then all while this was happening it detected an update to the sofware over the version shipped with the card itself, somewhere in the mix it all just malfunctioned. SO I uninstalled it and installed the new version I downloaded seperately in case the other version was corrupted. This time I updated Adobe air first, good move. Now the eyefi software could detect the card. However Trying to connect to my router was extremely difficult, the card itself is issued a mac ip address which becomes permanent. If your router does not support that then you need to setup your router accordingly. In order to use the card for the first time it automatically connect to the internet and REQUIRES you to create an eyefi account. I entered all necessary info to access my router, all setting were appropriate, however it just refused to connect through my router over and over and over. Every time you fail to register or connect it ejects the card and it is no longer recognized, lets just say I plugged in over 100 times. It took about 3 hours of trying over and over until it just decided to work for no apparent reason at all. I was able to add my main network to the card and save it.

Once my account was registered at eyefi, I started trying to ad and ad-hoc network from my desktop, this is where the software is running from and were I was logged into the eyefi servers from. The eyefi software has a bug and will only recognize the ad-hoc network the first time it is activated. However when you activate an ad-hoc network for the first time, you disconnect from the internet and you are disconnected from the software, in order to add the ad-hoc network to your card and save it, you have to be online!!! DUH! If you disconnect from the ad-hoc and reconnect to your router to get online, re-insert your card to re-initialize your card in order to save your new network, the network itself dissapears from the eyefi software and you cant add it. You can manually add your "other" wireless networks on your own, however, this feature only works if you check the box "router out of range" in order to trick it! Even then, it was so buggy that my card kept ejecting itself after each failed atempt to add the ad-hoc network. Also you have to make the network WEP. I feel like it only worked out of a miracle the first time around.

I was tired becasue it had taken 6 hours. I tested to see if the card even worked and it worked right over my router :) I snapped about 25 pictures, worked great, I went to bed tired but happy.

Next day I started trying to add the netbook I purchased specifically for this purpose. I installed eyefi clean and everything looked on the up and up... No matter what I did I could not get the ad-hoc network to setup. I was really tired and just put it away. This is a brand new windows machine, with windows 7 64-bit 4gb ram. I cleaned and tuned it and runs very fast in my opinion. The laptop works great with my router and is trouble free. 6 more hours and Im ready to just return the eyefi.

Next day I was able to add the new ad-hoc network on my netbook by doing it from the software on my desktop, it was connected to the internet, and the X2 card was plugged into my desktop.

Not so fast my friend...... now the card would not transmit any images to any of the networks!!!! What the hell!!! Even when it was plugged into my computer!!!

I called customer support and started over from square one following their exacting instructions. Let me tell you something, there is a very and I mean extremely specific process they want you to follow in order to make everything work. You would think that maybe it should be documented somewhere. Its not in the instructions and not on their site.

1)download the latest software, do no install from your card.

2)make sure you install the latest adobe air no matter what

3)without your card installed activate the eyfi helper software only

4)plug in your card with usb reader - it needs the power.

5)do not do anything, let your card initialize. If it does not initialize, be sure your antivirus is off (the rep said to uninstall haha yeah right)

6)then click the eyefi center once its recognized.

7)The first time you activate it, you have to provide your email and password etc for the eyefi servers. It does not always connect, I had trouble, if it fails your card will auto eject. You will need to follow steps 3,4,5 again

8)Add your network, click settings, click the drop down menu, refresh wireless networks, click your network, add in your password, click add network to card. I had trouble getting it to log in, and I know my own password LOL! It said to be sure my router accepts mac addresses and it was configured correct, I logged into my router and saw that the cards address was accepted. That mean it was a problem with the eyefi. If you have trouble your card will auto eject and you must remove your card and then plug it back in.

9)create your ad-hoc WEP network on desired computer. When your adapter creates this network your computer disconnects from the internet, which removes the ability to save the new network to the X2.

10) In order to add your network to the card you need the internet again, switch your adapter back to your internet, open eyefi helper and in turn center, then click settings, click the drop down menu, select Other, WEP, type in the name of the new ad-hoc, add in your password, click router out of range, then click add network to card. I had trouble with this too! It does not always save.

11)In order to use the ad-hoc need to select where you want the images to go under settings.

12)In order to connect the x2 to the ad-hoc network you need to change your wireless adapter on your computer over to the ad-hoc network. You will not have internet, this is normal.

13)Close all instances of eyefi helper and center without loggining out

14)restart just the eyefi helper

15)plug your card in with the usb reader, just let it sit and initialize

16)now your card should be ready to use, put it in your camera and take a few pictures. If it does not upload be sure that you do not have simultaneous ad-hocs running at the same time.

17) if it wont transfer be sure to give your card a low leverl format, I said "LOW LEVEL" then repeat 13-16

Customer support did ackowledge that I was experienceing a multitude of issues that are not prevelant in most cases. I was on the phone with them for almost 3 hours and they did not solve it by the way. I figured it out on my own.

So now it works, transfers are fast providing you are within 20 feet or so. There is one major drawback however. The eyefi card and the ad-hoc only stay connected while power is supplied to the card. It auto shuts off after 3 minutes without usage, or if it goes out of range. This is a huge problem because it takes between 2-4 minutes to auto reconnect the ad-hoc and the card. I cant stop shooting everytime the cards powers down or goes out of range. It will auto load them once it connects again and or comes back in range, however I wish it just stayed on. I dont care about battery life, I care abou the workflow. I already use a battery grip and it lasts a long time. I can buy 2 more batteries for nothing. If I cant find a way to keep it on I am going to return it.

I love the potential that this product is preceeding. Its just not ready for the big time yet. More of a novelty as opposed to a serious option.

UPDATE: I returned this product. Maybe I had a defective product. After a few days it just began to eject itself, then read, then eject, then read, then...you get the picture.
