Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Eye-Fi Pro 4 GB SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-4PCCustomer Review: Eye-Fi is the way to go for easy digital photography Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using a beta version of this card for the last few weeks and it's really impressive! With the Eye-Fi card and my Nikon D90, I have been able to wirelessly transfer both RAW images and video directly to my MacBook Pro.
This is actually the third Eye-Fi card I've used...I lost the first one and found it just too hard to return to the routine of removing the card from the camera, finding my SD reader, plugging it in and (most importantly) remembering to put the card back in the camera.
Side note: Eye-Fi's customer service is great, they were able to refund/transfer a Geotagging subscription I purchased for the lost card so I could apply it toward the new card. I believe the Pro model has unlimited geotagging, which works well. I think the geotagging is based off Wi-Fi triangulation. It even found my location in the parks at Walt Disney World!
The speedy upload of the large RAW files (usually around 7-9 MB) is great. You can even setup the card for an ad hoc connection, so wireless uploads go directly to your computer. You'll love the Eye-Fi card because it is easier to get around to adjusting and uploading images to Flickr when they are automatically waiting for you at the computer.
Finally, the selective upload feature is helpful because it lets you select which images you want to upload so you don't waste disk space with bad photos.
If you are going buy only one SD card, this is the one you want!
Customer Review: Nice idea, terrible execution Summary: 1 Stars
I've had an eye-fi card for several months. At first, I thought I had found an elegant solution for what was to me was a painful process, that of offloading photos from my camera safely and reliably.
Then I realized it had a terrible flaw: it doesn't have the ability to clean up after itself. It does upload photos whenever it's connected, but once the card is full, its up to you to delete the uploaded photos yourself. And, it's up to you to figure out how far the card had gotten by the time you needed space.
To add to the pain, my Nikon D300 doesn't keep applying power to the card by default (why would it?), so I had to modify the timeout settings in the camera to keep power applied long enough to get the latest pictures offloaded first. Success here is pretty much a crap shoot, and I spent far more time fiddling to make sure the camera was uploading than I would have just pulling the card out and plugging it into my computer. Furthermore, extending the timeout cost me valuable battery life.
In my book, if you have to pull the card out of your camera for any reason, or have to think twice about how the card is doing its work, the point is lost.
I'm now going back to a plain vanilla flash card. Simple, elegant.
Customer Review: Does a wonderfull job for our needs. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great device with lots of potential. It does a wonderful job for what we needed it for. The setup for an "ad-hoc" connection was a little difficult. This was a combination of issues with my firewall and the geo-tagging. Eye-fi support was working with me to get over this problem. I wish I could say the same for Norton's. There could be some better communications between "eye-fi" and the firewall programs makers. Once I got everything in line it works great. I can take a picture and it is downloading to my computer before I get back to it. My customers like seeing the thumbnail pop-up with thier pictures as we get to the computer. Theres only been a few times where the connections between my card and computer didn't get completed. Downloading video's takes some time, but that can be expected. I use it in my Canon SX20-IS with no problems between the camera and card.
I'm glad I found this, it will save a lot of wear and tear on my camera and lessen the likelyhood that I'll ruin my camera and/or computer by taking out the card or plugging in a cable for transfering pictures. We run a small business where we take pictures then print them, so having them beam to the computer is great.
Customer Review: Best thing since sliced bread!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned one of these since they first came out, and they're fantastic. I have one in each of the two digital cameras we own. They are fantastic. I had no trouble installing them in the cameras or on separate computers. Now we don't even think about the cards--when we take photos we just leave the camera on afterwards and the photos get sent automatically to their respective computers. When we take photos away from home, we just turn the cameras on at some point when we get home and we're all set. I can't believe some reviewer whined about having to delete photos off the card once it gets full...does any other card clear itself? Would you really want the card deleting your photos? And as far as having to extend the auto-shutoff time on the camera, that's probably more a function of the bandwidth of the wireless network...a 10 megapixel photo is a very large file. It takes some time to upload a bunch of them. We have found that extending the auto shutoff time to 5 minutes works just fine. No big hardship. Still a whole lot simpler than opening the camera, removing the memory card, plugging it into a computer, and uploading the photos manually. A no-brainer.
Customer Review: Eye-Fi Pro Performance Summary: 5 Stars
I am an avid amateur photographer and average around 1,000-2,000 images a week. I had a little trouble getting the configurations set just right with the eye-fi pro card and my Nikon D40. However, once I did get them all set I found this to be an amazing addition to my photography arsenal. The wireless upload is amazing and considering I only shoot in RAW the upload time is impressive. I just recently set up an ad-hoc connection as well and I have found that to be quite useful. I cannot recommend this highly enough as it makes your photography workflow much more efficient. I even set up an auto import into Adobe Lightroom so that my photos are already there for any post-production work needed. One of the best resources is the message forum on the eye-fi site as many other users have posted useful information. Should a need arise for you to contact customer service, I can say that my experiences have been nothing but stellar. I was walked a troubleshooting items and even received a return phone call for follow up. This purchase is well worth the money and the only thing I hope for in the near future is a larger capacity card, say 32gb.
