I have been wearing earplugs at concerts for years. I figured the ringing in my ears after a show or even the next day was not a good sign. So I've been using the standard foam plugs all along. But in shopping around for different types I happened upon these and ordered a pair.
Just used them for the first time last night. The foam plugs I have used in the past were rated at 29db and these are rated at 20db. I had no problem with this reduction as I always found the foam plugs tended to reduce the sound a little too much. I found the ER20's to be more colorful in the sound that was let in. By that I mean the foam plugs muffled the sound. The ER20's more muted the music instead of muffled it.
The one complaint I have is that the ER20's tend to reduce the sound across all frequencies. This makes for the vocals to be a bit lacking against all the instruments being played. If you think of an equalizer the settings tend to be higher in the midrange and lower on the low and high ends. What the ER20's do is make for a flat reduction across all frequencies where a bit less reduction on the mid range would be ideal. But what can you expect from a piece of silicon.
I would recommend these to anyone that regularly attends concerts. If you go to those shows that are generally general admission and you have to stand for the show you find most people shy away from the speakers on the stage as it is just too painful to stand there. But with these or any other earplugs in you can have this area all to yourself and be right up front.
Protect your hearing. You'll miss it when it's gone.
