Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Grundig S350 Deluxe AM/FM/Shortwave Radio, Black

Customer Review: Just what I was looking for
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally ordered a Sony ICF-SW7600GR World Band Radio thinking I would sit here at night listening to radio stations from around the globe. Well it turns out I don't enjoy that as much as I thought I would. Plus, I just was not that happy with the sound quality of the Sony as an everyday AM radio, plus the antenna on the Sony was just horrible - When in the straight up and down position it would wobble back and forth between the 11:00 and 1:00 position and drive me nuts (unacceptable to me on a $140 radio). So I did a little research and came across this radio and it's ideal for me.

This is my everyday AM radio that sits on top the 'fridge and the sound quality on AM and FM is wonderful. Its ability to pull in distant AM stations is great and it works really well on shortwave.

The old fashion tuning takes a little bit to get use to and it can be a bit of trick sometimes to get it right on the exact frequency, but the look and feel and sound of this radio outweigh any of the negatives. It reminds me of an old Radio Shack radio from the 70's I used to play around with as kid.

It is really fun to sit there and turn the dial and see what I can find from across the country. I strung up 75' of wire from one end of my attic to the other and with that attached to the connection on the back (another plus as I don't need to clip it to the antenna) I easily and clearly pull in stations from Cuba, Mexico, Canada and even a few from Europe. Plenty interesting to satisfy my shortwave appetite.

I don't have any problem with the tuning dial being cheap and flimsy as others have mentioned. Sure it could be a little more solid, but I don't foresee any issues down the road. This radio will last me a long time. Oh ya - and the antenna on this radio is strong, stable and quite long.

So if you're looking for a nice, fun to use, good sounding, all around table top radio - give this one a try.

Customer Review: Good radio
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had two of these since I bought them at a store on sale about 4 years ago. I needed a replacement for my 25 year old GE super radio that had finally failed. The fine tuning knob was broken on one of them when I bought it, but it works OK without it. I wasn't super impressed by the SW reception, but I only wanted SW as an occasional user, so not a big deal for me. The radio is a bit more fragile than the old super radio and the reception is not quite as good, but certainly good for an under $100 radio. The battery options are nice. (If you want to listen to SW you need to unplug it or the transformer buzz will drown out the reception.) The AM and FM are very good. The sleep timer is a pain. The radio decides, based on the length of time you press the on button, whether to turn the radio on, or to activate the sleep timer. This is absurd. Many times I hit the power button in the morning while I am making coffee, and the darn thing will turn itself off again after a couple of minutes. Before I have my coffee, the last thing on my mind is bending over and staring at the display while I turn the radio on to see if indeed it is turning on or simply engaging the sleep timer. The AC power jack is not positioned well either. It plugs into the back center of the radio and sticks straight out about 2 inches in the back preventing it from being placed against a wall. I haven't tried the external antenna, but it is a nice feature if you really wanted to try for weaker stations. (I am not really into radios that much, but realize they are very important when there is a disaster)
You can spend a lot more on a radio, and I am sure get better quality and performance, but for a casual user, this is a high value radio. Just baby the knobs.

Customer Review: Grun digs itself a hole with this JUNKER!
Summary: 1 Stars

Grundig has made some functions of the S350DL am/fm/sw radio a real pain: 1. If I wanted the radio to cut off (sleep) I would set it to do that. Seems Grundig's radio auto-turns off in 90 minutes tops, sure you can down that to 45-mins, or less in increments, but you can NOT disable it, so every 1.5 hours the unit cuts off & U run over to turn it back on!! Thanks for a preset function I really hate. 2. If the battery cover were any more loose you would need to duck tape it closed, with a handy carrying strap, don't count on the cover being there if you take it back-packing. 3. You need to enjoy back packing up high hills, as even with the fixed 2 unit antenna and 3 SW bands to choose from, the reception is pathetic, oh and the round antenna (Sangean ANT-60 Short Wave Antenna)that Amazon.com suggests you buy with this model will NOT plug into ANY part of this radio, it must be clipped onto the tip of the unit attached swivel antenna to even pick up more gain, fall off if the antenna is even moved by the wind. The sound it tinny and the model is much less than I expected from Grundig. Oh and calling tech support gets you to a company recording from Yukon telling you to leave a message. I wish I had never bought such poor quality junk and spent so much for so little.

Customer Review: Great Basic Table Radio Is Tops for AM/FM Reception
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're looking for a basic table radio without presets and digital tuning, you would do well to consider the Grundig S350 Deluxe, which I have owned and used for the last 3 years. The S350 will get you best FM performance possible. AM is great also. The speaker is loud and fills a room easily.

The antenna is very long. Make sure you have room to extend the antenna so it doesn't bend by jamming against a wall or a ceiling.

The tendency to drift in the old model of the S350 has been fixed with the new Deluxe model.

You will also like the fact that though the radio is analog, you can see the digital read-out, so you always know what station you're on.

Another outstanding feature is fine-tuning and RF grain so you can filter as much as you need in the event you get AM overloading.

My only complaint about the S350 is really a complaint about all modern radios: They are built of light plastic. Gone are the days of heavy, high-grade radios. But on balance if you are a stickler for AM and FM reception, you will find that you have a reception champion in the S350.

Customer Review: Nice but should have listened to reviews
Summary: 3 Stars

The s350dl is a nice radio, great sound, over all good looks. This is a first day review...I took the radio to my office today, set-up in the window of my office, set station and went to work on my day. However, about 4 hours into the day I noticed I no longer could hear the radio. The station had changed from 96.70 to 96.50 and lost single... Hence no sound.
I had read reviews that this radio did have a drift issue in the first models but after reading more recent reviews. It was said this had been corrected with a "Freq" lock function. The "freq" display would flash (which it does) and then lock the channel and stop flashing. This is not what I observed and it's just my first day with the radio. The other is the manual tune, It's nothing that it is hard. It's just a inconvenience. I purchased this radio as I was SW curious and I can see where the manual dial is good for DXing. However, the majority of my listening comes from FM. Having the convenience of pre-set tune memory and a digital tuner may need considering if you listen and will use as I.
