Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Escort Passport 8500 X50 Radar and Laser Detector (Red Display)Customer Review: Good detector, but bad quality Summary: 1 Stars
I bought my X50 Blue a couple years ago and it worked fine for about a year. Then the "self cal" alarm kept going off. Finally, it got to the point where it said "service required". I called Escort and it was of course out of warranty. They did however tell me that for $60.00 that they would repair it. I sent it in and it worked for about 6 months. Now it falses saying "laser" constantly. The first time, the service report said it had a bad antenna. Now, who knows what is wrong. In short, I wish I would have spent a little more and bought the valentine 1 and not had these problems. Escort has obviously saved money by buying sub par components that don't last. My detector has never been dropped or abused and still looks brand new. I strongly advise anyone considering this detector to look elsewhere. If you already bought one, keep in mind that you can call Escort and get it repaired for $60.00.
Customer Review: Best Damn Detector out there. Summary: 5 Stars
Regardless of what anyone else says. This detector is great. The Mute button on the cord is the best invention since sliced bread!!
Someone stated in a review that a CON was that you had to Turn on the POP every time you turned your car on. Hes a Dummy. You turn it on ONCE and it stays on. It Has saved me Numerous times and paid for itself 10 fold!!! Tons of options, great display options, Picks up Several different radars at ONE TIME. easy to read in PRO mode!! LOVE IT!!
Regarding: The Guy talking about the detector going crazy due to voltage when he turns it on. Sounds to me like you have a Crappy Car. or a Problem with you electrical system. Try it in another vehicle. I have never had that problem and have had this detector for over 1 year. (knock on wood) The Passport has a mode you can turn it too, and it will tell you what the voltage is, going thru your car. Check it out.
Customer Review: Unreliable and faulty Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this radar detector unit one year back. It worked fine for first few months as it picked up LASER, POP, and Ka bands properly. However, after 6 months, it started displaying a message: "Self Calibrating" and finally displayed: "Service Required." After that this unit was unreliable. I passed several cop cars with LASER gun pointed on the highway. This unit never alerted me (POP is turned on). After several of such incidents, I returned the unit for servicing. The unit came back with a note saying that they replaced antenna and updated the software.
Be sure to send the unit back if it displays "Service Required" message. If you ignore it, like I did, you might be travelling with a dummy unit.
Be sure to get extended warranty. These units does seem to have quality problems. Considering $300 I paid, I am giving it a ** rating because of the quality problems.
Customer Review: Best Investment For Long Commute Summary: 5 Stars
I have a long, daily, one hour highway commute and racked up several tickets. I finally had enough and purchased the Escort Passport 8500 X50. This detector saved my butt many times!! It's the best radar detector I've ever owned. I use the default settings for highway and they're fine. It's nice having the option to silence the X band but I'm not ready to do that yet since there is only one X band alert during the trip. The auto-mute function after initial alarm is great. The detection range is amazing and it detects over hills and around corners in some cases. Often, after detection, I find myself slowed down completely and waiting for the radar threat to be within visual range. Threat detection from rear is just as good. No need for an arrow to tell you it's detecting from the rear. When a threat is detected from the rear the signal strength gets stronger gradually.
Customer Review: Ok till the warranty runs out Summary: 3 Stars
I have 3 of these, was so impressed with performance of first bought 2 more 8 months later. Then the trouble started, Shortly after warranty runs out each detector started chirping away for no reason or saying service needed. Send the first one back, needed new antena, sent the second, same thing, now about to send third at $60 each repair. Voiced my complaint to rep, told me we must be misusing them. Leaving them on overnight...NO...
Extreme heat or cold...NO..I live in NJ we do not experience extreme weather. Using a splitter and plugging in another device thru lighter...NO
Rep was rather rude at ESCORT repair desk...Now reading all the reviews I can see there is a problem, most reviews were written early on...Problems start after 1st year. A $300 unit should not require a 4^0 repair every year....Think twice...I will pursue this with management at ESCORT
