Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Escort Passport 8500 X50 Radar and Laser Detector (Red Display)Customer Review: The good, the bad and the noisy Summary: 4 Stars
After driving for ~2 weeks with both x50 and Valentine One I am
keeping x50 and Val1 will go back to the vendor.
Besides the price differential, x50 offers better pop protection,
is less sensitive in the city driving and offers more up-to-date
interface.
On the other hand it lacks arrows and back window radar (it does
have a back window laser detector, which is not the same as a
full fledged radar that Valentine 1 has patented).
Arrows could come very handy, but this alone does not
justify the ~$120 difference between otherwise very similar
products.
Other than that, both units are very accurate compared to some
other detectors that I've tried. The noise level in the city
driving could get excessive, thankfully x50 comes with a very convinient mute button right on their "smart cord" power supply.
I am deducting a star for the lack of a carrying case,
as less expensive units come with carrying cases out of the box
I was expecting x50 to provide this accessory as part of the
product, not a separate purchase.

Customer Review: Warning: This is the worst detector I have owned Summary: 1 Stars
Well, after reading all the fanatical reviews and owning a beltronics for 4 years and not getting one ticket, I decided to "upgrade" to an Escort Passport 8500 x50. It started out seeming to work wonderfully. I would catch city cops a mile away. Soon, I started getting constant X band warnings every other mile just about when nothing was even around, even in the country.
I just took a trip to Florida from Indiana. I was heading down the interstate about 93, in 70 MPH zone. I looked to my left to see a cop, and all the sudden my detector went off. It didn't go off until AFTER I passed him. Needless to say I got a ticket. Okay, I thought maybe he just turned it on. I can live with one ticket.
So I'm coming back home from Florida. Not paying attention to my speed, because I have this god-graced radar detector. Well I'm following the flow of traffic, about 50 in a 35. Sure enough, my detector goes off, and I look to the right to find a cop sitting there. He comes and writes me a ticket.
This is by far the worst detector I have EVER owned. I will stick to beltronics.
Customer Review: Buy anything else - You'll be glad Summary: 1 Stars
The Escort Passport 8500 was terrible right from the start. The display stopped functioning after a few weeks. We sent it back to Escort and they claimed to have repaired it. Once again, it worked for a few weeks and then the display failed again. It had now broken twice less than three months after we bought it. The service technician said that they would replace it. So once again, we paid to ship it back to them. But instead of replacing it with a new one, they simply fixed it again. When we called to find out why they did not keep their promise to replace it, the customer service agent was completely indifferent and rude. He said that they will decide whether or not to replace items and they were not obligated to keep their promises. So all I can say is that Escort is worthless. They have defective products and poor customer service. We have now purchased a Whistler and we are completely satisified. I'm sure there are lots of other units that provide great performance for less money than this one. Don't waste your cash on this overpriced and poorly built piece of garbage.
Customer Review: Great Detector, but has a defect. Summary: 4 Stars
I actually bought this unit about a year and half ago. Works great and it's a super product. One big flaw though. I recently bought a 2004 Lexus ES330. Well all of a sudden the Laser indicator starts going off on the X50 for no reason. Just out of the blue here and there. Talked to Escort and they said it would have to be returned to be repaired, for $75 since it's out of warranty. Apparently certain vehicles can do this to the unit. Well my beef is that the 2004 Lexus was already out long before I bought my X-50. I sent the warranty card in, but never got a notice from Escort saying they found a defect with it, and I could get it fixed under warranty for free if I thought I might ever own a Lexus one day. They knew about the problem, only fixed the ones they had to, and let everyone else go off warranty. To me that's bad business. We all don't buy and keep the same car for 10 years at a clip. So before you buy you should make sure you're either getting an updated unit that works the way it's supposed to, or that your car doesn't conflict with the X50.
