Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Energizer NH15BP-4 Rechargeable AA Battery 4 Pack

Customer Review: Lasts a day at best
Summary: 1 Stars

NiMH rechargeable batteries from two generations ago had capacities around 2000 mAh and they were pretty decent. There was chemistry change around the 2005 timeframe that allowed for higher capacities such as these Energizer 2450 mAh batteries, but that came with a major tradeoff. Yes you can get the higher capacity, but they would discharge at a much much higher rate just sitting there. Charge them and in a few weeks they'd be dead again. The previous generation might have lasted 2 months before going completely dead.

These Energizers are simply the worse of the worst for self-discharging. They weren't so great brand new, and after being in service for a bit mine are down to where they will self-discharge in about a day. No joke. They're useful if and only if you're going to know 8 hours ahead of time when you'll be using them, quickly pop them out and shove them into your device, and then use that device in such a way that they'll be drained within a couple hours.

Instead, there's is a new generation of NiMH batteries called Low Self-Discharge. They have sneaky packaging like Duracell Precharged. They also show a lower NiMH rating on the package, so you might look at them and laugh as I did the first time I saw one in the store. "Precharged? Who cares? Look, it has 80% of the capacity of these Energizers..." Well, don't believe the lack of hype. They've managed to solve the number one issue with rechargeable batteries, yet don't communicate fact that effectively enough on the packaging.

Instead, these new LSD batteries hold the charge almost as well as alkaline batteries. This unstated fact entirely changes how you can use rechargeables. It used to be that you would change the batteries immediately before using them. Now, you simply use them in your device. When you pull them, charge them back up and then toss them in the drawer to be used again next time. If you have kids with toys, then you know how how important it is to have batteries at the ready, and the new LSD batteries actually fit the bill. If you use these in a digital camera or flash, charge them and leave them in the camera. They'll be ready to go when you're ready to use the device.

In short order... avoid these Energizers and buy one of the following instead....

Duracell Precharged
Kodak Precharged
Rayovac Hybrid
Sanyo Eneloop

Rigorous testing by verified nerds shows that they each perform within a few percentage points of each other, so just get whatever is on sale. The Kodaks and especially Duracells can be found in local stores.

Customer Review: These things are garbage
Summary: 1 Stars

I should first say that I really wanted these to work. They are easily available at local retailers, they're reasonably priced, and we have a lot of AA-powered devices that were driving me to the poorhouse in battery costs.

I bought the first set of eight, and found that batteries left in the camera for about a week would discharge enough so that the camera wouldn't run.

I thought it was the charger, so I bought another set of 8 (in case I ruined the first set by overcharging them) with the newer charger they sold. These had the same problem.

I tried figuring out a rotation schedule so that I could use the (16) batteries in the camera... the problem is, they're pretty much useless 3 or four days after a charge, so there isn't any way to know when to put them in the charger to have a fresh set ready when the set in your camera runs out of juice.

I read one review that pointed out that maybe it was a 'cheap' charger... well, I only used the charge that was sold with the batteries!!! It seems a reasonable assumption that the charger the silly things were sold with would be the one you would want to use!

Regarding overcharging... these charger have nice little lights which I think are supposed to go out when charging is complete. Well, the lights never go out. So I tried charging them according to the time table in the included instructions. In fact, I've never been able to get them charged enough to use the camera using those times.

So, overcharging is determined by how? When they start to get warm? Well, supposedly if they get warm, they get damaged.

I really hate the fact that I spent so much $$$ on 16 batteries and two chargers. I should have read the amazon reviews before purchasing...

Customer Review: Buy these, save $1000's
Summary: 5 Stars

In theory, these batteries will save you at least $1,000. They cost about $30 with the charger and you can charge them up to 1000 times. If a set of regular batteries costs $4, that savings equals $3,000 over the lifetime of the product. Well, i can't imagine using regular batteries ever again.

If i can only charge these 500 times, that's good enough for me.

I bought these batteries because i use my CD walkman regularly - every day to and from work. That is the only piece of equipment i own that i use batteries for really. These particular rechargables last longer than Rayovac rechargables, and definitely last longer than Alkaline consumables, making the savings to you even higher.

If you own ANYthing that takes batteries that you change 10 times a year, BUY THESE!!! You will save money, frustration, the environment and time.

I bought the 4 pack, my walkman uses 2, so i just switch them out once every 10 days, at this rate i can't imagine buying a new set for 7 years. Hmmm...that seems strange but what seems stranger is the thought of buying non-chargables. So even people with minimum usage for batteries will save money. If you have more than 1 person in your house, i can't see going without, you would be throwing you money down the drain.

Their are several styles of chargers for the ACCu series. A large one for various styles of batteries, a compact for AA & AAA batteries, another Compact for AA NIMH or NICA. I have the last one, it is small and cute and people always ask me about it, then i just start raving.

The only problem i see is that it does take over 10 hours at first and for a full charge, but that is no big deal. Buy an extra set of two if you frequenly need them right away.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Customer Review: The Marathon Bunny
Summary: 5 Stars

If the original Energizer AA alkaline battery is The Bunny, a digital camera is a hungry wolverine, devouring 2 or 4 of them li'l guys at a time and spitting out an empty shell after just 20 to 50 pictures. Makes you wonder why every digital camera doesn't have a big sticker on the box screaming "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, USE NiMH RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES!!"

The latest generation of Energizer Rechargeable batteries will outrun Energizer alkaline and lithium by miles, and come back for more after a trip to the recharger. They'll keep your digital camera fat and happy on a single charge provided you let them "cook" for at least 24 hours on the first charge. After that, use 'em as little or as much as you want and store them in the charger between uses.

As a "thrash" test, I charged a pair for 24 hours, removed them from the charger for another 24 hours and installed them in a Vivitar ViviCam 3746 3.1 megapixel digital camera. After taking over 100 pictures with both the flash and the LCD display switched on, the battery meter never dipped to the "time to recharge" mark. Remember, NiMH batteries aren't like those old NiCd batteries from way back in the 1990s. You never have to "drain" them regularly nor do you have to take them out of the charger to prevent overcharging.

The recloseable package provides a handy pocket pack for carrying a spare pair (if your digital camera uses 2 batteries), so the smartest way to use them is to buy 2 4-packs. Leave one set in the charger and take the other set when you head out for a day trip. On vacations, take along the charger and both sets of batteries. They don't take up that much room and you'll never have to buy an overpriced stale battery from a hotel gift shop.

Customer Review: Great for a few months, then won't hold charge
Summary: 2 Stars

I got these batteries just over a few months ago for my portable GPS unit that I use often on my travels. In fact, I bought eight of them (two packs of 4). I was upgrading from my previous set of 1600mAh Rayovac NiMH AA batteries that were still going strong after 2 years. When I saw the new energizer 2500mAh rechargeables I was excited to purchase them thinking they would last longer than my old 1600mAh Rayovacs. Boy was I wrong!

For 2-3 months, the 2500mAh energizers worked well. A charge lasted about 6-7 hours in my portable GPS unit. I was getting roughly 5.5-6 hours on my old 1600mAh Rayovac AA's. My GPS unit is spec'ed for 6 hours on a pair of AA's so the new 2500mAh energizers seemed to work flawlessly.

Now they work okay and seem to be getting worse each time I charge them, appearing to hold less of a charge each time. For the last month or two (4th & 5th month after their initial purchase) I'll be lucky if I can get 4-5 hours of use out of them in my portable GPS unit. I now get roughly 3.5-4 hours of use out of them. I pulled out and tried my old 1600mAh Rayovac AA's and once again got approximately 5.5-6 hours of use out of them in my GPS unit - and my trusty Rayovacs are just over 2 years old!

I thought I might have had some defective energizers but I can't seem to get any pair of combinations to hold a decent charge. Charges just don't seem to last - it's really disappointing. I am going to look at another brand for high capacity 2500+ mAh NiMH batteries to replace my 1600mAh Rayovacs. Would be great if the energizer could hold its charge. But because they don't, I do not recommend the energizers to anyone.
