Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Insten Universal World Wide Travel Charger Adapter Plug, White - by eForCityCustomer Review: Works well despite shortcomings for Japan users... Summary: 4 Stars
I've noticed that most if not all of the other reviewers were commenting on their use in Europe. I thought I should add a review, commenting on my experience with this product, which I am using in Japan. Perhaps for European countries, 5 stars is appropriate-I can't comment on that part since I've never tried it there. But I will comment on the usage of it in Japan.
The basic problem I have which keeps it from five stars is that it will plug into a socket, but only barely. It kind of hangs loose from the socket which can make it difficult for the device to work properly. Once you get it to the right position, though, it will stay there. Essentially, at that point, you only need to not bump it in order for it to stay properly. For me, 9 times out of 10 of the device plugging in properly and working without additional effort is enough for me, but always having it loose is kind of worrisome for some people, I am sure. Finally, because the plug is apparently the same as in other countries, this review would in essence apply to usage in the US, Australia and Thailand.
Of course, if you are to use it elsewhere, this plug will likely do the trick. Therefore, and especially because of its price, I can still recommend this travel plug adapter. Since this is pretty much my only option for changing a 3 prong plug to a 2 prong plug (they don't have it in most of Japan), I am very grateful to have bought it.
Customer Review: Clever design, but take care using it in the UK Summary: 4 Stars
I liked the first one of these so much after it worked for my son who was heading for a job in Germany, and for me in a couple of visits to the UK--that I bought two more to bring with us to the UK when we moved there for four months. By the end of our first week they were both dead--anything you plugged into them just got no current. All I can think is that there was some kind of fuse built into the device that blew. why it would have blown, I have no idea. The replacement adaptors I bought to use with the same items worked fine, and UK plugs are themselves fused.
Great idea, great price, five stars if it had worked. But it didn't, after one week.
UPDATE: After writing the above I looked at other recent reviews and found one by a fellow named Bennett who reported a similar problem--and also the solution, which is to not push the adaptor all the way into the outlet. He's right. Trying them again (I fortunately had not pitched them) I indeed find that when I push them flush against the wall they do not work, as originally described. But if I pull them out slightly, just slightly, from the wall, they make the connection and supply current.
I would describe this as a defect, but not nearly so serious as not working. I also suspect this is a problem only with the UK outlets, not with other ones. So I raise my rating from 2 stars to 4. And--thank you Bennett!
Customer Review: Worked for less than 6 hours. Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this adapter to use with my Macbook/iPad/iPod/iPhone for a trip to Hong Kong and then Bali. I read a lot of the reviews and they seemed to be positive. I never thought I would write a review for an item that I paid $4.95 for(it is now $1.95) but I am still in Hong Kong and very jet lagged and cannot sleep. This adapter was used with for my computer upon arrival. I took it out of the box and plugged it in, plugged in my computer and saw it charging and was pleased as my computer was about 10 minutes from being out of juice. I went to sleep and about 5 hours later woke up to send some emails. I came to the computer and saw it was only 50% charged. I looked at the adapter and the red light was no longer on. I then plugged the adapter in to about 5 more outlets in my room and it did not work on any of them. It is broken. Worked for less than 6 hours. I went and bought one from an electronics store today and it has been working like a charm and actually has a USB port as well to charge two things at once. Thats my review, this thing is a piece a junk. I thought to myself that you get what you pay for, don't buy this but I did not listen. Well, you get what you pay for......
Customer Review: Used in Hong Kong / China Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this converter to use with my laptop and cell phone / video camera charging. The converter itself is easy to use. It worked very well in Hong Kong because they use British style plugs. China uses the Australian type plugs. When using these plugs there is no third plug. Some circuits at upscale hotels will only work if 3 prongs are used, not just 2. When two prongs are used either in the Australian plug or the European plug, the connection is very flimsy and falls out of the socket easily. I did not have to use this much in China as the hotel I was staying at (a Mariott hotel) had several options on the wall plate that allowed me to use American plugs.
Regaring power transformers: Most of Asia uses 220 - 240 Volt circuits. If all you are using are laptops and cell phone / camera charging cords, most of those will tolerate up to 240 volts. Just check the sqaure/rectangular box attached to the cord to see how much voltage it will take. If you are using hair dryer / curling iron / electric razor / etc., you will need a power transformer as these appliances typically will not take voltage over 110 (used in America for most things).
Customer Review: Doesn't stay in the socket Summary: 4 Stars
UPDATE: Ok, my bad. I didn't read the included instructions for a simple plug adapter eh? Well turns out after you unlock the socket and the prongs pop out, you have to lock it again. This stops them going back, and this solves the issue I had of it not staying in the socket.
I recently moved to America from the UK so I had a few appliances that had a British three pronged plug that I needed to use. I bought five of these adapters and none of them stay in the socket. As the US plug can be neatly tucked in when traveling, it also means that is gets slightly pushed back into the adapter when you try and plug it into the wall. As a result the prongs don't go into the socket far enough and simply fall out. I tried various different plugs and extension cords to make sure it wasn't just an isolated incident. Simply useless for me, maybe you can use it in the UK or Europe, but for use in the US it's of no use.
And the shipping cost on these things is ridiculous, I know they're trying to make it look cheaper and get you on the shipping. If I wanted sleazy pricing tactics I'd go shopping on eBay.
