Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Rechargeable NiMH Batteries, 2650mAH, AA size, 8 batteries per pack DC1500Customer Review: Impressive - Best AA Batteries I Have Ever Tested Summary: 5 Stars
If you are looking for AA batteries with significantly more power than other commonly available AA NiMH batteries, get the Duracell 2650mah if you can find them. I had been searching for high-performance AA batteries for quite some time before I stumbled across these in a CVS. My purchase was a wise one as these have outperformed every other AA I have tested, including those rated at 2500mah.
My specific application was supplying power to a homemade bicycle light that uses the recently-released, world's most powerful LED emitter: the Seoul Semiconductor P7. It has a 900 lumen output and consumes up to 12 watts of electricity. This means in the best of circumstances, I will get about 70 minutes of runtime at full power.
While I don't have any test equipment to truly assess the performance of these batteries, I am struck by their apparent performance compared to that of other AA batteries in my bicycle light. Swapping out 2500mah batteries from an unnamed Asian vendor with these, the light overheated in a matter of minutes. I actually had to change my resistor circuitry to accommodate the extra power. While this performance doesn't indicate a longer battery life, it does suggest the batteries have a greater current output a given voltage, leading a to a greater power output. Note that I have the LED module crudely connected in series with two large resistors instead of a more elegant DC converter setup. In practice, I have been getting over an hour of runtime.
For some reason, these batteries are difficult to obtain in retail stores. The same CVS sells 2450mah (or less) AA batteries by Duracell. While I haven't tested these, the new rating could merely be an act of conservatism. I was, however, able to purchase a second set of these batteries on eBay from what appeared to be overstocked merchandize vendor. They also appear to be available from Amazon at the time of this review.
All things considered, I would highly recommend these batteries, especially if you have a high-performance application. They appear to well worth the effort of ordering them from an online vendor.
Customer Review: Don't even think about buying these pieces of junk Summary: 1 Stars
I have 16 of these batteries.... thought at first my chargers were bad. So I bought new ones thinking maybe the high capacity was too much for my other charges. Batteries say charged but don't power up my camera. test w/ alkalines camara works.
So I go and buy the maha charger, do a full capactiy charge/discharge/recharge to ensure batteries are good. Maha charger fully charges, says ready to go. Plug the batteries in dead, camera beeps and off.
So I then do a slow charge, float charge.... same deal.
batteries are beep-off in the camera. Take some of my older 2100mah batteries they work like a champ.
Worst money I ever spent, imagine you are ready to take pictures and have these "new great" batteries... you are screwed.
Now to figure out how to get them replaced and make duracell live up to their warranty.
Just heed the advice of others, don't waste a minute or penny! These were a waste of resources and shame on duracell for not recalling them.
I just called their "help desk" they informed me that they will replace the batteries with a coupon in 2-3 weeks. I explained the quantity, they would just say I would get a coupon to replace "most" of the batteries. Reinforcing why you should stay clear. My lower capacity 2400's work fine but the 2650's are a waste of our resources and duracell needs to get these off the market. 16 bad batteries does not happen by chance.
The other trivial thing, I own a professional battery charger by maha and it's one of the best rated out there... they believe I should use their cheap 20 dollar charger only since my charger might not work. I'm sure they are just reading off a flowchart. They even asked me what device types I've used them in, what types of other things did I try them in. We'll see what "most of my replacement coupon will be". My hunch is it's going to be less than what I have bought. Did I say RUN AWAY FROM THIS CRAP BATTERY??? Amazon needs to take this product off the site since it's not doing their reputation any good.
Customer Review: What's your charger? Summary: 4 Stars
I'm reading a lot of bad reviews of these batteries but I have to say that my experience is much different. I have bought two sets of these - 16 batteries, and they're performing very well. Initially they might only hold 2300 mAH, but after a few charges I've had these holding over 3000 mAH. Leakage? It simply hasn't been an issue for me. I use these in remotes, a cordless keyboard, and a Garmin GPS and I'm pleased with the results.
So why is my experience different compared to all of the bad reviews? I wonder if it has anything to do with my charger? Now I don't know what other people are using, but I did not go the route of finding a cheap charger or a charger that races to get the job done the quickest. I invested in, and given the price and my desire to use rechargables I do mean "invested", a La Crosse Technology charger.
These chargers let you choose how much current you want to charge with, whether you want it to discharge first, have it go through a discharge-refresh cycle, or just do a straight-up charge. It measures voltage and total energy in, which is why I know how much I'm putting into my batteries.
My experience with my La Crosse is that all of my rechargeables charge right up there. I continue to use batteries I bought eight years ago. There's no memory effect thanks to the discharge-refresh cycle, and I'm seeing all of my batteries get more than their rated mAH capacity. These Duracells have been especially good for me.
If you're going to use NiMH, you should consider the charger you use if you really want to get the best return on your investment. Now if you're in the camp of having a really good charger and have bad experiences with the Duracell, then fair enough. My own experience is that they're great and maybe I've just gotten really lucky twice.
Customer Review: Only One Redeeming Point - The Packaging Summary: 1 Stars
Writing good reviews is always a joy because you affirm to yourself that you made the correct decision. -- This won't be one of those --.
Before you add these batteries to your cart, think about all the other low reviews on this product, then please move on.
I purchased these batteries for a variety of purposes and so far six out of the eight batteries have failed to charge on the first try or failed to hold a charge more than 4 days (probably more than 90% depleted since I was only able to take two photos. For you techies, you are probably thinking, "Its your charger". I understand your point as I've tried two chargers, my ole reliable MAHA MH-C401FS that has successfully charged my other PowerEx, Sanyo, and and Sony HiMH batteries. On one new set of these Duracell's I tried my Sony charger that came with the Camera and it took fully four more hours to charge the Duracell's (My two year old Sony 2500 MaHr batteries were my measuring stick) but these Duracells were found to be depleted three days later when I dropped them into a radio (BTW: I also noticed this same charging pattern on these cells in my MAHA charger.) My perception of these batteries is that there are much better ones to purchase. It was surprising that I had so many defectives. Other purchasers must have had identical problems. Save yourself a few bucks in this economy and look further.
Oh, and the the two unused cells that I have left, they're stored away awaiting to disappoint me in the future and the one redeeming point being the packaging, my cat loved to play with it.
Customer Review: Don't listen to the haters! Summary: 5 Stars
Look, I got a couple of these batteries used which came with an xbox 360 controller I bought somewhere.
They work much better than the energizer batteries I got, and those I got new.
Be sure though to buy the exact kind of battery with this green and black or the newest kind that come with the 15 minute charger.
Duracell has worked far far better than energizer. For example, with these used duracell batteries I got, I recharged them and placed them in a portable DV camera. The camera sat there for 3 o 4 months with the batteries inside.
When I finally got to use it again, I thought the batteries would give out soon enough before I could record any significant audio or video footage.
To my surprise, and it was a surprise as I didn't even remember having them until I open the camera's battery compartment, they recorded a full more than an hour long audio conversation, and several videos. They have not given out yet.
The rechargeable Energizer ones, I placed FULLY CHARGED in my rock band drums set, played for a couple of hours a video game, then after three days of the drums sitting there doing nothing, the thing would not even turn on. Faulty equipment? No, faulty batteries which still get going draining themselves long after you've finished using them; oh, let me add draining themselves at a significantly high rate these Energizer things.
:)
Go with duracell, guys. In my experience, these specific ones or the new kind which come with the 15 minture charger work great!
