Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable for iPod and iPhone (White)Customer Review: Whether or not you get a genuine Apple cable on this page depends on which store you buy from! Summary: 4 Stars
You'll notice some reviewers have complained that the cables were cheap knock-offs, while others got genuine Apple cables. Now i understand why. The first cable i ordered from this page was from the OEM Shop. It was shipped in a reasonable amount of time (a few days) and I received a genuine Apple cable that works great. I was so pleased that I ordered two more (one for the car and a spare).
Well, I didn't pay close enough attention to which store I was ordering from, and it happened that the default store for this second order was Blue Harbor. I received the package after a week or so and opened it to find two problems: only one cable was shipped, and it wasn't an original Apple cable, but a poorly manufactured (and ugly) third-party cable that didn't work with either of two iPhones (when plugged in, an error was displayed: "Charging is not supported with this accessory"). To Blue Harbor's credit, they did refund my money (though only after repeated requests).
I then ordered two more cables from the OEM Shop, and again i received genuine Apple cables.
I feel it's inappropriate for a single page at the Amazon site to feature two different products (i.e. genuine Apple cables and cheap imitations), especially because the "Product details" section of the page explicitly gives the Apple SKU (M9569G/A). Unfortunately that is the case (at least as of mid-2010), so customers should beware certain vendors selling cheap imitations. The OEM Shop sells Apple, and Blue Harbor does not, and I don't have experience with any of the other vendors, so if buying from another vendor, check first to confirm that what they're selling is a genuine Apple cable.
Customer Review: Not OEM but a good product Summary: 5 Stars
It's disappointing that this was advertised as an Apple OEM cable when it's not.
However, the product *is* good. The USB connector is a standard, molded cable end and takes up very little room. I can use it in stacked USB plugs with no problem.
The device end is slightly different from Apple standard. There are squeeze buttons on the sides which disengage the cable lock. I like this because it ensures a snug and stable fit. If you were to yank the cord, the phone goes with it rather than destroying the plug. YMMV.
This cord works great for charging, for MS Scanner/Camera Wizard, and for iTunes sync on my iPhone 4.
This cord is not as rubbery, so it doesn't bind and is easier to coil up. It's about 1/2" longer than the Apple cord, but it otherwise about the same.
Sync speed seems to be about the same as with the apple cord, though I've not done metered tests. Either way, I didn't notice any major lag nor any errors in sync.
In addition to being superior in functionality, it's much less expensive than the Apple cable. We purchased 2 of these and both work. These are for our PCs and the stock ones are for bed-side charging.
Granted, it's inexpensive and not OEM, so there may be less quality control; however, the seller has DoA warranty, and the product is low enough cost to warrant buying a few spares anyway.
SUMMARY:
Overall, despite the mislabeled product, I'm very happy with this cable and would recommend it to anyone looking for a spare or replacement cable.
Customer Review: 70% quality for 8% price Summary: 4 Stars
Engineer's review.
I ordered 3, and everything I say applies to all 3. Tested, retested, and verified.
Obviously not the "real thing", but functions just as well. Real thing is $19 and this is $2 rounded up.
Charges just fine. Connects to PC for BOTH iTunes syncing AND direct file transfer (through My Computer) just fine. Digital connection is 100%.
Physical connection is the only flaw in the device: the end that plugs into the phone is a very right fit and has to be lighty-to-moderately forced in.
The only cosmetic differences between this and the "real thing" (the $19 cable that came from Apple with my iPhone) are 1.) this one is thinner because it lacks the wire mesh shielding/insulation between the rubbery outer cover and the wires inside (nothing is lost because interference only affects analog signals), and 2.) this one has printed very small along the side of the cable "Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China" (ending about 3" from the iphone plug) while the original cable has no such printing.
This will most likely not last as long as the official cable; you can expect to go through 2-4 of these over what would be the lifetime of the original cable (depending on how much you abuse it).
I'd say that the quality-per-dollar-spent you get here is about 4-5x higher than on the original (full-price) Apple cable.
This is a good deal, go for it!
Customer Review: 3G/GS USB 2.0 Doc Connector Summary: 5 Stars
If you are on this page, your search for a 'smarter' option than purchasing it at App Store at standard price + shipping certainly ends here. Because this one just works fine!
Both me & my wife own 3GS, so we need this cable everywhere. computers and home, work, car and its been a while so the original cable started cracking from the ends.
So far I've orders 6 cables from diff online sites and these are the best so far. As other reviewers said it doesn't look like the original cable, but it works exactly as one.
The USB end looks like regular USB Type A. the iPhone/iPad end is like the original connector but the inside lock plastic is white instead grey (which in my opinion looks better). As opposed to some older models with depress-able side locks, this one is just like the original connector.
What makes this cable better than the original cable is at both ends of the cable when it goes in the dock or USB connector, it has the flexible support which stops the cables to crack at the first place . Not sure how Mr. Jobs' design team missed that.
Edit - For Some reason amazon picks up different sellers, mine were from BlueHarbor, so you really need to see which one you are buying, in the shipped from or shipped by section
Customer Review: WOW! WHAT A GREAT DEAL!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't understand what the other reviews are saying. When I read the reviews to this product before I bought it from this seller, I was worried. But since it was about $1 and had free shipping, I thought I'd get it, despite the negative reviews.
First off, let me tell you about the great shipping experience. 2 days after I ordered this usb for the ipod, I received it! 2 DAYS! AND I DIDNT HAVE TO PAY FOR SHIPPING!! They sent it to me in first class mail too!
Also, other reviews said they received it from China. Mine came from California.
I have another USB cale that came from the APPLE store. I compared EVERYTHING. Seriously, I'm still confused if the USB i got is a fake...both USB cable have everything in common. I inspected them both for a long time and cant find a difference.
Then I put my new USB cable to the test. I inserted it to my Sony Vaio with my ipod attached. Instantly, my ipod came up in my itunes. I even downloaded like 20 songs! There is no flaw to this USB cable!
This is the best deal I have ever gotten in Amazon. I have never gotten free first class shipping, excellent quality, and good performance for such a good price!
Overall, this item is 5 stars :)
