Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of DLO HipCase Leather Folio Case for iPod touch 1G, 2G, 3G (Black)Customer Review: Wrong product received and BAD customer service from seller Summary: 1 Stars
I ordered two of these DLO HipCase Leather Folio cases along with my purchase of two 2nd gen iPod Touches for my sons, ages 10 and 8, all in the same order. The packaging for both was identical. But guess what? About 5 weeks after my sons have been using them, I find out from my younger son that his folio doesn't allow him to adjust volume without removing the iTouch from the case!
Turns out the two pieces I ordered were NOT identical: one had the openings in the proper top-left side (designed for the 2nd gen), allowing for volume adjustment with the iTouch holstered, while the other didn't! When I contacted eek Technology, they told me that since I'm bringing this to their attention after my 30 days are up, they cannot help me out in any way. I was stuck with one working and one folio/case that is a pain in the neck to use.
I contacted DLO, and they said the problem was that:
(a) either I made a mistake while ordering and ordered one for the 1st gen and for the 2nd gen (I didn't: I simply checked the quantities I wanted to receive during checkout), or
(b) with the seller, eek Technology: they probably had old stock on hand and shipped me one for the 2nd gen and one for the 1st gen. It isn't a defect with the case, per se.
Clearly, it is (b) above.
Beware of this seller - their customer service is terrible. I'm not as upset about losing out on $17 that I paid for this product as I am about the fact that eek Technology won't admit their shipping mistake and are simply trying to hide behind their standard "...our return policy is..." spiel. I will never buy from this seller (eek Technology) again.
I would recommend you study your order and check it immediately and thoroughly upon receipt - or you could face this problem, too. Others have been similarly duped with this purchase - read all other 1 and 2 star reviews carefully before purchasing this.
Lastly, the product description online as well as in my emailed receipt read "2 of DLO HipCase Leather Folio Case for iPod Touch 1G and 2G (Black)", making it sound like the same one will fit both the 1G and 2G. How was I to know one will be correct and one won't in the shipment I will receive? The design for the 1 Gen and 2nd Gen are NOT the same. BE CAREFUL! This is my first-ever negative shopping experience at Amazon.com since the 90's.
Customer Review: Well worth the small cost! Summary: 5 Stars
I must say, I hate most of the hard plastic or soft gel cases they have out there for all the iPod models. For my iPod touch, in particular, the only cases out there were also open to the elements, which meant that my iPod screen would either be in danger of being scratched or damaged, or I would have to put a plastic protector over the screen, which would reduce the touch sensitivity (not to mention all the damn bubbles that get caught under those things).
Since the iPod touch came out, I've just been using the slipcase from my previous iPod, and have been looking for a case that both completely covered the iPod, but flipped open to allow the screen to be accessed without hindrance. This case does both, and you could not ask for a better product.
The case is soft leather, which looks and feels very nice and allows the flap to be bent behind the iPod without problems, and the flap is conveniently held in place while closed with magnets. There's easy access to all ports, and even a small hole near the top of the iPod for the light sensor, which shows good thinking on the manufacturer's part. There is also a belt clip on the back, which is handy if I ever need to use it. The Touch fits very snugly inside, but is still easily removable (unlike some other cases, which nearly require a crowbar to insert and remove).
My only gripe (and it's a small one), is that when in the case, the leather around the screen makes access to the borders a little harder, especially with web browsing (although it may just be my big fingers). Either way, it stopped being a problem after I was used to it.
This is hands down the best case I've had for any mobile device. It's obvious the manufacturer put a lot of thought into what iPod Touch owners really wanted. If you have an iPod touch, and you want good protection with ease of use, you want this product! Well worth the small cost!
Customer Review: As good as the reviews say...and more Summary: 5 Stars
I relied heavily on the reviews for this item before I purchased it. I wanted something for my iPod touch that protected it, but didn't change its functionality. The dlo HipCase is an incredible product that does everything right. It is attractive, easy to use and provides protection and easy enough access to my iPod.
There are two benefits to the HipCase that I don't recall reading in the other reviews. First, the case's design helps overcome one of the "flaws" people have talked about when reviewing the iPod touch. With a traditional iPod, one could easily manipulate the click wheel to change songs, lower volume and pause play without looking at it. The touch features of the new iPods can make this difficult and unpreditctable. However, the HipCase helps this along. The bottom edge of the "window" provides a guide for your finger, making it easier to unlock the slide and even pause or change tracks without looking.
Also, if you have a radio or clock that can use an iPod, you may know that the thickness of traditional iPod cases, such as those by iSkin, make it very difficult for the iPod to stay docked without falling out, so difficult in fact that you stop using that function of the appliance. It is so easy to remove the iPod from the case that you'll feel like you have a new clock or radio.
I also found no difficulty tapping the edges of the iPod as some other reviewer have stated.
Some reviewers have stated that they were able to store their cleaning cloth in the little pocket provided on the flipup part of the case. I found it difficult to reliably get the cloth in the pocket unfolded. When folded, the thickness of the cloth prevented the magnet from connecting well. This is a minor inconvenience given the many benefits I have found in this product. Don't hesitate to buy it - and buy it from Amazon - elsewhere it costs twice as much!
Customer Review: superb case for iPod iITouch 2G Summary: 5 Stars
My goal was to find a flip case that fully protected my iTouch 16 gb second generation while I carried it in my pocket, but which could easily be removed when I used the iPod, and also could be left in place if I wanted. This case is it.
This case was designed for the first generation iTouch, so the volume button on the left is not accessible when the case is on. But it doesn't matter because there is an onscreen volume control, so I virtually never use the volume button anyhow. The docking port and earphone jack are always available, and the auto light sensor is available when the flip lid is open. That makes sense since screen brightness is irrelevant when the flip lid is closed and the screen is covered.
The case is well made, looks nice, is easy to carry in a pocket or outside using the belt clip, and is very easy to remove from the iTouch. The flip lid covers the entire screen and has a magnetic closure to stay shut.
Another review correctly notes that using the onscreen keyboard as well as the button on the bottom can be slightly challenging because the case is so close to the edge of the screen, but it just takes a little practice to get used to.
I do not like using screen protectors unless absolutely necessary, and with the flip lid to protect the iTouch in transit, I feel no need to use a screen protector.
There are heavier duty cases, such as the Agent 18, but they are noticeably thicker than this case, which is the slimmest case covering both front and back that I have found.
For protecting your ITouch 16 gb second generation this case can't be beat.
Update January 13, 2009: Standing this case in the vertical position is great for reading eBooks, and putting it on a table or tray in the horizontal postion is a convenient was to watch movies.
Customer Review: OK in the short term, deteriorating with age Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased my DLO HipCase in January 2008 and am reviewing it in March 2008. This passage of time is crucial to my key complaints.
When I first got the HipCase, it wasn't the one pictured on the box. The exterior appears exactly the same, but whereas several credits cards can be seen in the interior cardholder sleeve on the box cover, I can fit no more than one credit card in the cardholder sleeve on this model. Anything more and it simply won't close. I contacted the company and found that, due to customer responses, the design had been changed. This was by no means a dealbreaker, and while I'd hoped to just stuff my drivers license and credit card into the HipCase and go without a wallet, it's not the end of the world.
Of greater concern was the deterioration of the HipCase's elastic about two months into owning it. At first, my iPod Touch was held securely in the HipCase - I could turn it upside down, move it briskly, etc, with no problem. Now, however, if I turn the case upside-down (generally an unintentional motion, letting my hand drop to my side while holding the device), the iPod falls out. If I turn it sideways (to view a YouTube video or even just hold it horizontally but still "portrait" style) and move quickly, it falls out. Several times now, the headphone cord has been the only thing that stopped me from dropping my iPod on the ground. Several other times, when I had the headphones unplugged, I did drop and scratch the device.
Does the current incarnation of the HipCase work? At the most basic level, yes. It clips to my belt and prevents the iPod from being scratched in my pocket. However, potential buyers should be warned that after a couple of months, they may need to be nearly as careful with their iPod as if it had no case.
