Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Denon AVR2310CI 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity

Customer Review: An Affordable and Feature-Rich 7.1 A/V HDMI Receiver
Summary: 4 Stars

Pros: Serious number of inputs; 5:1 surround sound; output to (2) sets of speakers

Cons: None, no really

Bottom-Line: The Denon AVR-2310CI works and works well and I am glad I choose it; it works for now and there is still ample room for expansion.

Oh the joys of modern television viewing mated with a solid Audio/Visual (A/V) stereo receiver with High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) inputs ports. The receiver I had been using a Sony STR-DE935 had 5.1 surround, but the 10 year old receiver lacked the latest HDMI ports. And the surround 5.1 channels stopped working.

So it was time for a new A/V receiver with at least (4) HDMI inputs, 7.1 Surround Sound, a Phono (turntable) input (these are next to impossible to find on any receiver expect higher end boxes), at least 100 Watts per channel into 8 ohms, and the latest Dolby Digital technology, all at a reasonable price-point. After a considerable amount of research I decided upon the Denon AVR-2310CI A/V receiver in black.

Denon AVR-2310CI

The large matt black Denon AVR-2310CI is a 7.1-Channel Multi-Zone, Home Theater Receiver with 1080p HDMI Connectivity. The two remote Denon AVR-2310CI serves up (5) HDMI input ports (one HDMI output) as well as (2) component inputs.

The AVR-2310CI is a versatile A/V surround receiver with a 7.1-channel surround amp that supports Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. The AVR-2310CI provides a Graphical User Interface (GUI), which outputs to a connected HDMI connected television that allows you check the unit's status in color for easier operation. The on-screen GUI also allows you to setup and control the receivers' various controls.

According to Denon the AVR-2310CI is also equipped with a plethora of the manufactures' powerful technologies including Direct Mechanical Ground Construction and Minimum Signal Paths for faithful reproduction of HD sound and HD picture quality.

The Denon AVR-2310CI converts analog video input signals (composite, S-Video component) to digital video signals and transmits those to the HDMI output port. Digital video signals are sent to the HDMI output even when multiple HDMI devices such as a video camera or a game console are connected to the AVR-2310CI. One HDMI cable is all that is needed to connect the AVR-2310CI to a HDTV or LCD monitor.

The AVR-2310CI also brings Dolby Pro Logic IIz processing to the A/V table. By adding a pair of front height channels Dolby Pro Logic IIz introduces a new dimension to home theater entertainment. Dolby Pro Logic IIz is compatible with stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 content and provides enhanced spaciousness, depth and dimension to movies, concert video and video game playback while maintaining the full integrity of the source mix.

The matt black Denon AVR-2310CI is a substantial receiver, meaning it's heavy, has a lot of buttons (but not as many as the receiver it replaces) on the front and a lot of ports and or connections on the back.

One of the reasons I choose the AVR-2310CI was the receiver's ability to accept up to (5) HDMI inputs; I needed at least (3) to start with: one each for DVR, BD Player, and (finally) a multi-media PC. The AVR-2310CI output to two separate sets of speakers 5.1 surround sound as well as A & B front channel outputs.

I replaced my set of Bose Acoustimass 5 Series III's and Cambridge SoundWorks MovieWorks 58 Home Theater Speakers with Polk Audio RM705 5.1 Surround Sound home theater speaker. The multi-media PC set-up comes courtesy of Dell Inspiron 580s with an HDMI output.

Remote Control

The AVR-2310CI ships with two remote control unit; one for each zone. The primary unit actually comes with a front and back side; it is somewhat clumsy, but not impossible to mater given time. And while the primary buttons are silver, they do not glow in the dark, nor are they backlit so...

My Thoughts

I am very, very pleased with the Denon AVR-2310CI. At 735-watts of total power (105 watts per channel) output, the AVR-2310CI is more than sufficient to meet my current audio and video needs. The ability to connect up to (5) enhanced HDMI (1.3) devices features 1080 I/P conversion as well as analog to HDMI up-scaling. The addition of 7.1 surround sound is a big plus in my book as is the ability to output to multiple zones.

The AVR-2310CI is also equipped with Audyssey technology which allows for the easy set-up of your speaker system. The receiver ships with a microphone which one places in and around the room for optimum speaker performance. The Denon AVR-2310CI also includes Audyssey Dynamic EQ to help ensure rich bass and smooth tonal balance at low volume listening levels. In addition to enhanced HDMI 1.3a repeating (5 in, 1 out), the AVR2310CI features 1080p i/p conversion, analog to HDMI up-scaling and HDMI to HDMI scaling.

The resulting sound quality from the Denon AVR-2310CI is well outstanding; as of yet I have noted no distortion even on quite classical passages. And the Polk Audio RM705 5.1 Surround Sound Home Theater Speaker System has proven to be the perfect mate; surround sound is amazing and nothing like what I used to get from my old setup. And since I watch almost all of my programming in full HD, 5.1 Surround Sound is part of the deal. I am now enjoying television and movies in clear, crisp, bass-enhanced sound!

Up with (1) cable HDMI and down with multiple RCA connections for video and sound. After I finished swapping out the Sony STR-DE935 for the Denon AVR-2310CI I had a heap of A/V cables to box up, all replaced with HDMI cables that carry both audio and video signals. My DVR, BD Player, and multimedia PC are all connected to the receiver via HDMI cables.

Thus far the AVR-2310CI has proven itself to be a reliable receiver; it is utilized daily, sometime for hours on end, and its still working as well as the day I took it out of the box. There have been no burnt out LED, no malfunctioning switches. The Denon AVR-2310CI works and works well and I am glad I choose it; it works for now and there is still ample room for expansion.
