Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Delphi SkyFi3 XM Satellite Radio with Car KitCustomer Review: Nice radio, but shop around...very wierd pricing. Summary: 4 Stars
Not sure why the prices for this are all over the place. List price is a laugh, I bought it from Crutchfield for $20 (the next week it was $40), most places it is around $65. My biggest complaint is Delphi doesn't include the home kit. Home much extra to include a power adapter, antenna, and a cheap little dock? Give us a break Delphi. The home kit is overpriced most places (sometimes more than the skyfi3!)
Othewise, very pleased with Skyfi3. Locks up once in a while (press mode and volume together), and had a little glitch getting it xm to recognize the radio. Use it mostly at home, but in the car I have an aux input for the radio, which car makers should make standard (how about it cost accountants!). The buttons on the car dock are badly designed.
My favorite feature is recording songs and whole channels for a period of time. The micro sd card is a must. Throw away the ear buds that come with it. I would give it 5 stars if they include a home dock next time around. Would be interested to know how well these units hold up over time. Seems fragile, but we'll see. I almost bought two to have a spare.
Customer Review: Nice unit Summary: 4 Stars
The other reviews on this page pretty well describe this unit. Just a few other points I would add:
The unit will hold up to ten hours of XM recordings in its "on-board" memory. With the appropriate micro SD card you can add another 2 gig of MP3 files from your computer. The on-board recordings can be integrated into playlists with the downloaded material.
Unlike the Inno, you can leave this unit in the car dock and it will still come on and record any channels you tell it to (provided the antenna is in a position to receive the signal; i.e., NOT in the garage). Timer recordings do have to be set up while the unit is hooked up to your PC.
If you unit does lock up on you, it CAN be reset by simultaneously pressing the "mode" button and holding the volume "up" button.
The auxillary input jack on the unit is great for hooking up CD players, iPods, etc. The nice thing about it is that you can leave the peripheral item constantly plugged in; the jack doesn't automatically override the radio or My Music functions. You use the "mode" button to go to auxillary.
Customer Review: Great Gadget. Very Portable. Only a couple of setbacks Summary: 4 Stars
I bought my SkyFi3 about a month ago and I really like it. It has great features and is really portable. Outside of a couple of minor things, it is a wonderful product and a great upgrade to the SkyFi2. My only sticking points are with the remote. The keys on the remote sometimes are not relayed to the unit very well. Sometimes the key you press, another option is selected. I stop using the remote in my car because of this. The record feature on the Skyfi3 unit sometimes doesn't capture the whole song. At least 3 times, I tried to record a song but it either recorded the portions of the previous track or it cut the song off midway. Those are really my only two complaints about the device. I bought a home kit for my office and I am able to easily take the device back and forth from my office to my car. I am glad I bought the item and I would recommend this buy for everyone else. As for being able to listen to live XM with headphones, you will need the goofy headset with the internal antenna in order to listen to Live XM on the go. Good product over all and well worth the money.
Customer Review: Horrible XM Unit Summary: 2 Stars
I got this unit for my birthday just under a year ago.
The volume is much lower than the Roady2 I had before this. I have a pretty nice system in my car and i have to max out all of the settings on the unit AND turn the volume up all the way in my car to hear it loud enough.
Also everytime I turn the unit on all the settings and favorites have been erased so I have to turn up all of the settings everytime I start my car.
I mainly use this unit at work at my desk plugged into the home kit. When I answer the phone or leave my desk Ill pause the unit. Sometimes Ill build up to an hour of delay. Ill be listening and all of a sudden it jumps 40 minutes forward to the middle of a commercial and the worst part is IT WONT LET ME REWIND BACK!!
The one and only good thing ill say is the screen is very bright and easy to read at night in my car.
Overall this is a cheap unit. Since purchasing Ive read so many horrible reviews on this and would not recommend buying this unit.
Customer Review: Pretty good for the price Summary: 4 Stars
This unit beats its competitors on price. And it appears to do so by using cheap feeling components.
However there are certainly no complaints about functionality. I've only had the unit a few days and it has done everything I wanted. I use it in the car to listen on my drive to and from work. After spending some time to find a station where I get the best reception I can say that this is as good, if not better, than my Skyfi2.
The sound will never be as good as one that plugs directly into an aux port on your radio, even with the SureConnect. If you have the option to plug in directly, do it.
(Update: I've had the unit a couple months now. The buttons on the car adapter and remote are quite finicky. All too often I try to select a station but it moves to somewhere else in the menu. The system is also quite slow to start when I've got a lot of mp3 on the SD card. The lowest volume is also too loud for me -- I had to use earphones with an embedded volume control.)
