Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Delphi SA10224 SKYFi 3 Portable XM Radio Receiver with Vehicle Kit

Customer Review: What a Piece of Junk
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this to Replace a Worn Out Skyfi2 that wouldn't work anymore. I have a Roady XT in my other car, So in Hindsight I should have gotten another Roady XT. I went with the SkyFi3 cause I found the SkyFi2 to more than sufficient.

What I don't Like.

(1)Unit Constantly Locks up from Day 1 -- Still Locks up after updating the Firmware. It gets tiring having to keep resetting the unit.

(2)Delphi used the cheapest materials they could possibly find when building this unit, The Buttons don't always work when pushed, then You find yourself pushing real hard just to be able to change stations, And forget about the remote, It's the same story here.

(3)To this day I've yet to be able to save anything to channel '1' or '9' When you are in the "channel save" mode, pressing either of these 2 channels only causes the unit to revert back to the XM preview channel.

(4)The fact I need to connect to the internet and 'update' the unit. The Skyfi2 wasn't designed to do this and I never, ever had a problem with it until it quit working after 3 years of daily use.

(5)The SD Card Mp3 player, If I wanted to listen to MP3's I'd buy an MP3 player instead of a Satellite Radio. I bought the radio to listen to XM why would some idiot think this was a great feature to include? I'm beginning to think this is what causes the unit to Lockup consistently, cause when it Locks up, It is always on the "Checking For Media" screen at startup.

What I like about the Unit:

Absolutely nothing other than it does occasionally tune in XM Radio.

In Short STAY AWAY from this Junk -- Find a Roady XT or even an old SkyFi2 if you want a good radio. It seems the idea was to offer something more, But the idea failed Big Time.

Customer Review: Underrated... So Far
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using this receiver for several days now with no problems whatsoever, before or after I upgraded the firmware. There are several XM proprietary limitations to this receiver being "portable" that some people want to know about. I was looking for a completely portable receiver that I could use outside of a home/office and/or car, so I've listed a few things below that you might want to know before purchasing:

A) Recording XM programming works. If you tune to a song and start recording, you'll be able to record only (to my knowledge) from the point in the song where to you tuned to it.
B) It seems as though you can only use the receiver to receive XM signals if you purchase the separate antenna headphones, which I haven't tried yet. The unit (without a dock) only has the XM proprietary interface socket a the bottom, and no separate socket for an antenna.
C) The unit charges well (when docked) and communicates easily with a PC via USB. I loaded one MP3 onto it and it plays well and shows the ID3 tags (song title and artist name)
D) Searching by artist is very easy, and Tune Select bookmarks allow you to select certain artists or certain titles. When those titles are playing, you'll receive a reminder.
E) This product comes with a car kit, but does not come with an AC adapter (to plug into a home outlet)
F) The remote control works well, but scrolling is slower than using the controls on the unit
G) The unit has a stereo input and aux setting, so you don't have to worry about unplugging it and plugging in your iPod in the car or at home

Overall, it's a really good receiver for the sale price (under $40.00).

Customer Review: Delphi SA10224 SKYFi 3 Portable XM Radio Receiver with Vehicle Kit
Summary: 5 Stars

I am really impressed with the Skyfi3 XM Satellite Radio. It is lightweight, the right size to fit in you shirt pocket or pants pocket and has the right functionality to serve its purpose. The sound quality is good with enough volume to overcome most external sounds, in particularly for me, a lawn mower. Its mobility allows it to be used in your home, car and outside walking or jogging. You have to purchase the accessories for the home and outside functionality. I also purchased the home kit since the SKyFi3 comes with a car kit. I purchased the wireless router in order to transmit the signal from the south side of my house to a location inside my house. It is absolutely necessary to have clear view of the southern sky in order to receive the satellite signal. It has worked wonderfully after setting up the antennae outside in a covered plastic container. The antenna is supposed to be weatherproof but I am not taking any chances. It took me about 2 hours to read the directions for each device and get everything working. Even the car installation was very easy and worked once all the parts were connected. I have had one glitch with the device. I tried to turn it on one day after not using it for a week and it wouldn't come on. After much anxiety I read the manual and it explained how to reset the device. I like most it ability to set up recording schedules for your XM stations. These can then be sorted by various means to access the recordings. The device has many functions and for the $26.99 including S&H for the car kit it was well worth it. I highly recommend this device and its accessories.

Customer Review: I don't understand what all the complaints are about!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I read so many negative reviews about the lock-up issue. I have had this happen twice but there are 2 simples actions to take to correct and prevent from happening. When the unit locks up, hold the power button and press the up volume button and it immediatly shuts off and you can power it back on. What usually causes a lockup is starting the car with the unit docked and the power adapter plugged in. When I got in the habit of unplugging the adpater when I shut off the car and plugging it back in after the car started I have not had a single lock up. I have a convertable and leave the top down at work and the temp has never caused a malfunction. The radio works great. I love it. As a matter of fact I switched from a competitor's portable radio on a different service. The competitor's device was a HORRIBLE piece of equipment but that is another review all together.

As far as using this unit as an ipod I would not reccomend it. It is a little bulky. If you want portable tunes then buy an mp3 player. The design on the skyfi is good, it sits snugly in the cradle (more than I can say from the competitor's unit)

Recording is simple and I love the bookmark feature that alerts you when an artist is playing on another station.

Bottom line:

If you want a great radio for the vehicle that will record your favotite songs and alert you when your favorite artist is playing then buy it! Great price. If you want a portable player to run, bike, hike, etc then get an mp3 player. I would, without hesitation, reccomend this unit.

Customer Review: Just an awful piece of junk.

Wow what a disappointment this Sky Fi 3 is. I got it as a Christmas present and thought it would be great. Unfortunately is has been possibly the worst piece of electronic equipment I have ever owned. Every cold morning I get into my car and end up driving 30 minutes ( half way to work ) before the receiver comes on. I called Delphi and they said it was locking up because it was too cold for the radio. TOO COLD !!! I don't live in Alaska for God's sake ( no offence to AK , I'm sure it's alot better than NJ ) , it has maybe been so far this year at the coldest 16 degrees. What modern piece of electronics is affected by a slightly cold morning ? What does this receiver have tiny radio tubes inside ? I've never heard of a piece of solid state electronics affected by the cold like this. All Delphi support has to offer is " Bring it inside at night and keep it warm ". What is this radio my new pet? Should I get it a little blanket and tuck it in at night so it doesn't get chilly ? I have to say keeping it warm does seem to work, but like I need another thing to carry around. If I go to a store and the lousy radio gets cold in the parking lot it takes forever to start up. Also another bad feature, the bleed through of local radio stations. If your somewhat near the transmitter tower it completely takes over the antenna and your left with no XM. I haven't owned a satellite radio before this one, but one can only hope they are all not this awful.
