Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of USB Powered and Most Efficient Metal Cooler Pad with 3 Built-in Fans for Laptop ComputerCustomer Review: Best notebook cooler ever! Summary: 5 Stars
This thing was designed by an engineer, not some sissy marketing maven. It's solid aluminum, not plastic. The fans blow air towards the laptop, which means it works with your laptop's fans, not against them. Besides, if you want them to blow the other way, you can reverse them with a screwdriver, wrench, and about 30 minutes time. The unit is deep enough that my 17 inch notebook is stable on it, although it overlaps the edges about almost two inches on either side. The cooler has numerous feet that grip the notebook and maintain the distance between them. I think this also contributes to the solid feel of typing on my notebook on the cooler - more points of contact means less unwanted motion.
This is NOT a cooler you can put in your lap and set your notebook on. Remember, it was designed by an engineer, and engineers don't use notebooks in their laps. That's what tables are for. (And boxes, and ice chests, and almost any other flat surface.)
Problems: 1) The lip in the front could be a bit larger. My notebook has a rounded front, and I would like a more "locked-in" feel. 2) It has a built-in and non adjustable tilt of about 15 degrees. That's not much, but if you are a good typist and aren't used to tilted keyboards, it can take some getting used to. You could put a paperback under the front of the cooler to level it off, if this is an issue
BOTTOM LINE: This is the very BEST notebook cooler under $60.
Customer Review: Danger! Hazard to your computer Summary: 1 Stars
Beware of this product! It really deserves negative stars. The unit I received was wired incorrectly. When turned on it formed a short circuit across the USB power. If your computer does not detect this condition and protect itself this could damage your computer's USB port.
I think I am lucky. My laptop detected the excess power drain and protected itself. Amazon is handling the refund and return shipping. My main loss seems to be the time and hassle.
The Amazon listing shows this as a product by DekCell and sold by "Super Deal". The box showed the product number DX-704. The package was shipped from DreamBargains.net, Inc. in Arizona. I include this information because sometimes Amazon reuses reviews when the product or supplier changes.
If you have one of these, check the switch wiring. If only two terminals of the switch have wires connected then your unit has this problem. On mine, all the red wires from the fans were connected with one of the USB wires on one switch terminal and all the black wires from the fans were connected with the other USB wire on the other switch terminal. The fans run when the switch is in the off position. The USB supplied power is short-circuited when the unit is in the on position.
Customer Review: Great on flat surfaces, very poor anywhere else Summary: 3 Stars
I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 that heats up very quickly on any surface. After being disappointed with other cheaper coolers, I decided to try this one.
On a flat surface, such as a desk, I give it a 5/5. It dissipates heat very well and keeps the outside and internal chips near room temperature with extended use.
However, I on all other surfaces I give it a 2/5. I like to use my laptop on the couch or in bed, and a cooler is required to keep the computer from overheating and from scalding me (According to Dell this is normal, colleagues with the same computer model have tried to RMA it and Dell just sends a very cheap cooler for free) Anyways, the first thing you'll notice when using this cooler in your lap is that there are numerous sharp points on the bottom of the cooler that make it very uncomfortable and may even scratch you if not careful.
Additionally if you try to place a cloth or blanket under the cooler it will be pulled into the fan and will likely obstruct airflow or stop the fan altogether. It would be a perfect if there was a back, . . . .
Honestly, I would probably return this product if the shipping, restocking fees, and waiting on hold for an RMA was worth getting $20 back.
Customer Review: Long name, simple design, good cooler Summary: 4 Stars
The thing about this pad that I appreciate the most is it's simple design. It is, in effect, a simple piece of aluminum bent into a cooler-pad shape, three fans bolted on, and a bunch of rubber grommets and pads to keep your computer and itself in place. The fans are standard 60mm size, nice and quiet, and when the day comes that one of them does start to fail, the wiring scheme is so simple that I'll have a harder time scrounging the tools and parts to replace it than actually replacing the fan.
The only real problem I have is it's size. I have a large laptop (17" HP DV7) and it hangs a couple inches off either side and a little off the front, so it's really designed for a machine smaller than the one I have. Despite this, it cools my machine exceptionally well and is stable enough that it has survived the "curious toddler what's-this-daddy? test."
Pros: All in all a well designed, sturdy, and efficient design. Fans easily serviceable/replaceable.
Cons: Completely open design on the sides and bottom. Little protection for underside wiring, not very portable. Overall size would work better for notebooks smaller than 17".
Customer Review: Nice cooler! Just what the doctor ordered. Summary: 5 Stars
I was going to build my own laptop cooler out of a sheet-cake pan and copier cooling fans, but then I discovered this ready-made one on Amazon. After looking at 10 or so laptop coolers, I decided on this one as it was made better than the others - aluminum vs plastic, and had three fans. I just got this from the UPS man about ½ an hour ago and already the computer is cooler to the touch.
Now that the daytime temperatures are in the 80s, my Dell Latitude D531 used get so hot that it would shut off by itself. Now it's running nice and cool! The 17 inch cord might be a problem for some, but it's fine for my use as I have 2 USB ports on my Dell. I am using one for the cooler, and the other for my 7 port USB hub. The cooler is slanted, and tilts the computer up about 1¾ inches so the keyboard is easier to type on. The three fans run so quiet that you can barely hear them.
I got a good chuckle out of the Features and Benefits paragraph on the box as it was obviously written by a person whose first language isn't English. (This cooler is made in China) :-))
