Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of DVI Gear HDMI Cable 2M (6 Feet)Customer Review: There's IS a difference, but I'd rather spend less money Summary: 4 Stars
I'll start this review by saying that I made a foolish mistake - I bought one of those expensive $80 dollar monster cables. It could have been worse, my pricey habits might have led me to buy the $170 cable right next to it, but I digress.
A little background; I have a Sony Bravia KDL-52W3000 52-inch 1080p LCD, with a PS3 as my blu-ray player. Also, I have a couple HD channels that I like to watch. After paying for the expensive cable (used for HD channels) I realized that I would need another cable for the PS3 so I priced online and bought this one and another 5 dollar cable (cables to go). After receiving them, plugging it in and comparing it back-to-back with the expensive cable, I'm confident that there IS a visual difference between the two.
I used many movies and channels to test this with, but for this review I'll explain what I saw in the movie "300". On the $5 dollar cable, the picture looked grainy... like a colorful static that sprinkled the picture as it moved - that's the best way I can describe it. There were no smooth textures in the picture, a mirror finish on the shields of the Spartans for example looks dirty with the colorful "static", almost as if someone put sand all over my TV screen. When I pause the movie, I can get a closer look and see all the imperfections. Leonidas' face is not picture perfect as I would expect on a 52" screen, but dusty looking instead. I thought maybe it was the scene, so I quickly changed to several chapters with different lighting and put other blu-ray movies in and I still saw it. Audio was unaffected, from what I could tell.
The 80 dollar cable, oddly enough, STILL was not picture-perfect, but it did offer far less "static" on the screen. Textures were smoother for the most part. I decided to pause it, switch the cables, and see what it looked like on the 5 dollar cable (both this one and the cables-to-go one). Same frame, but more imperfections. Switched it back to the $80 dollar cable, and it returned to looking slightly more refined. This leads me to believe that if I truly wanted a picture perfect experience I would have no choice but to purchase a $100+ cable... but who in their right mind would do that?
What did I end up doing? I used the 5 dollar cable for my Digital HD cable, and the 80 dollar cable for my PS3. No way am I going to pay that much for a second cable, I'm on a budget! Anywho, I wrote this just to let people know that there IS a difference, but most people I'm sure will be more than happy spending a fraction of the price on these cables. That's why I gave it 4 stars, they still get the job done.
Note: You may experience a difference if you use a smaller TV, The imperfections might be a little less noticible on a 30" screen or lower, but I cannot say for sure.
