Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DWL-G730AP AirPlus G High Speed 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Pocket Router/APCustomer Review: Spectacular wireless client! Summary: 5 Stars
This device has exceeded my expectation. My wireless router is on one side of the house (and the second floor) while this little sucker is on the other side of the house (on the first floor) and the signal is strong and reliable. That has not been the case with some other devices I've used (in particular, a certain USB wireless adapter that I have). I bought the D-Link pocket router/AP to be used as a wired-to-wireless bridge (client mode) for my Xbox360 as I was bound and determined not to pay $100 for Microsofts Xbox-specific USB wireless adapter. For less that $50, the D-Link device has been just what I was looking for. I hooked it up to my PC long enough to configure the security settings, the plugged it into the Xbox's RJ45 jack and everything is running smoothly. I haven't messed with it as a router or AP, but did check out the settings. This is a surprisingly full-featured product considering its minute package. Nicely done, D-Link!
Customer Review: Drops wireless connection once per minute Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this to use with my Apple iBook, with internal Airport Extreme card. The iBook works well with all wireless networks I've encountered.
Until the DWL-G730AP. The connection drops approximately once per minute, with the drop lasting about 3 seconds each time. That may not seem like much, but any TCP packet that gets sent during this interval will be lost, resulting in a delay that can last up to two minutes. After a while this becomes extremely aggravating.
I have spent hours on the phone with D-Link tech support but they know nothing about Macs and just endlessly walk me through the same simple busywork (try different channels, try different speeds, move the computer around the room, verify that there are no cordless phones and other wireless networks, etc.).
If you have a Mac, I would recommend that you avoid this router. I don't know whether it has the same problems with Windows machines.
Customer Review: It works as advertised; documentation needs work Summary: 4 Stars
i've had the D-Link DWL G730AP for about 6 weeks and I'm very satisfied. Either as a portable wireless gateway or fixed, it works as advertised. My only complaint is that the documentation while simple is incomplete and missing some details (specifically regarding the need password for each mode of operation and more specifically for "client mode").
Quick notes:
The range is surprising for so small a device.
I've not been able to make the USB power work, so that's somewhat useless (at least for me).
The internal "help" should be more in sync with the supplied documentation. Once you get past the documentation the device works.
If not for the documentation and the USB power I'd give it 5 stars. Except in client mode, once you get it configured, it's basically set and forget.
Bottom line: it works, I highly recommend the device.
Customer Review: Converts a Wired Internet Connection to Wireless Summary: 4 Stars
The hotel we stay at in Tokyo has free internet access in the room, but it is not wireless. The connection is through a cable, which works great if you have a laptop and can place it on the desk next to that cable. But what if you have an iphone or ipad? Those devices do not have cable connections. This little device fixes that problem. You hook it up to the cable supplied by the hotel, and this device creates your own little wireless network in your hotel room (or wherever). The initial set up may be a bit difficult - I had a friend do that for me. But, once it is configured, it works like a charm. You just insert the internet cable and plug the device into a power outlet and you have an instant wireless network. That's it. The entire device, with its connections, fits into a very small carrying case that is easy to take along on trips. I'm very happy I bought this little device.
Customer Review: Great router, bad documentation! Summary: 5 Stars
First, this router is tiny... smaller than most usb wifi adapters! I was quite suprised when I opened up the box.
I am using it in client mode for my Xbox 360 and it work perfectly after I finally got it setup.
Setup was a bit challeging as some other people have noted, in client mode, you MUST enter your computer's MAC into your routers mac filter, versus the router's MAC. This tripped me up for 15 minutes, until I finally realized and entered the wired computer's MAC. Also, make sure not to enable DHCP on the router itself unless you don't need to access it's menu (versus it's default address of 192.168.0.30) unless of course you need a different address range. DO enable DHCP on your computer though if your network uses DHCP.
Anyway, great product, once setup, it converts any wired computer/device to a wifi connection with no config/drivers.
