Customer Review: Very Portable and Well Organized Wireless Do-hicky
Summary: 5 Stars

I call this a Do-Hicky because it can do more than just be a wireless client. I was given this as a prize in the office pool of gambling on TV shows. Don't ask. :) But I can't get over how cool this thing really is.

I use it on my business trips and it does a good job with creating a hot spot out of a standard ethernet port. I actually have wi-fi built into my laptop so I don't need this to be a wireless client device, but it comes in handy at hotels and other places that don't offer wi-fi, but do offer ethernet based access. I keep it configured as a wi-fi access point so all I have to do is plug it into the wall (ehternet) and into a power outlet and suddenly that wired port is now wireless. This is also useful in the night classes I take. In my night class there are a couple ethernet (cat5) ports in the wall, but I can't see well when I am in the back corner of the room. So by plugging this into the wall in the back and sitting at the front of the room, I get the best of both worlds. Very Awesome!

Customer Review: good things come in small packages
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this router because I needed one in my second home (corporate apartment). It works great, and I was surprised how small it is. I haven't taken advantage of the portability yet, but I like that I can power the device with a USB cable (which means that I don't have to take the AC adapter with me when I travel).

The router administration has all the features of a full-sized router. I've set up MAC filtering without any problems. Just a hint, if you're having issues when you first configure the router, restart the modem it's connected to to refresh the IP address. Worked with Time Warner in NYC at least...

Also, I haven't had any issues with the router overheating and stopping (it's been plugged in and on for over a month now). I was also impressed with the travel case the router comes in - very nice and small enough to put in my laptop bag when I'm on the road.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase (even though this router is more expensive than full-sized ones).

Customer Review: Great LITTLE Wireless Device
Summary: 5 Stars

There are many other reviews that extol the virtues of this little AP/Rtr, but I love it and felt compelled to make a couple of points. SIZE: the unit is smaller than a pack of cigarettes. I'm using it to connect my DVR to my wireless network. I had an AP, actually a regular wireless Rtr set to AP mode, placed on top of my DVR. It was glaringly noticable and UGLY! This unit is black, as is my DVR, and is so tiny one doesnt even notice it unless you are looking for it!
One minor con: When set to Client mode, by design DHCP doesnt work. This is fine once its up and running because it gets the IP from the Primary Rtr. But it means that you have to set your PC for a Static IP in order to access/configure the unit. I'm a Network Engineer, so this was not a problem for me, but I suspect many people who buy the unit will have to call support in order to get past this hurdle, if they are setting it up in Client mode. In Rtr and AP modes it gives out IP addresses, so one wont have this problem.

Customer Review: Perfect for my iPod Touch!
Summary: 5 Stars

I often encounter hotel rooms with cable internet connections only (no WiFi), which doesn't help me when I want to use my iPod Touch to check my email, surf the web, or maybe check the weather forecast. I bought this pocket router to solve the problem, and does so very nicely.

Setup was a total non-event. I plugged in the Cat-5 cable from the wall, and plugged in the router's power supply. Ten seconds later I entered the hotel's password on my Safari browser and fifteen seconds after that, I was online.

Curious about its range, I took my iPod out into the hall and started walking. I got about 75 feet away before losing the signal, but that was through multiple walls of the hotel -- plenty far enough for what I'll be using it for.

The zippered case is great, but it's far larger than the actual router. You could fit the unit and its wall power supply into a much smaller space if you wanted to pack really light.

Great unit!

Customer Review: Who needs a WiFi device driver?
Summary: 5 Stars

This device saved my laptop's Ubuntu installation. Before I got it, everyday sites like yahoo!mail and Angie's list would hang and stall, because the Ubuntu device driver for my Broadcom WiFi was really flakey. Well, an OS that can't handle the web sites I need to browse is just about useless.

But my laptop's "wired" ethernet works fine under Ubuntu. So I use the DWL-G730-AP in client mode, and suddently Firefox has no problems. Life is good.

Setup of the device is thru the web browser, so there is zero-install.

The trickiest part of installation is that before configuring the device you must give your ethernet interface a static IP address. But after the device is configured, you must give set your ethernet card to use dynamic IP assignment.

The DWL-G730 is sleek and stylish, and comes with a case to hold the device, its cables and charger. I'm very pleased. The only down side is its need for a power outlet.
