Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DWL-G730AP AirPlus G High Speed 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Pocket Router/APCustomer Review: client mode not well thought out; won't connect to "54g only" network Summary: 3 Stars
This is a useful device which I purchased mainly for its "client mode" and as a backup wireless router. Especially appreciated is the ability to run on USB power. However, I spent about six hours trying to get client mode to work on my wireless network. After much trial and error with various configurations, I found that this device doesn't like the "54g only" setting of my ASUS wireless router. It does eventually connect with 54g, so no idea why this setting poses a problem.
I have to say that the client mode is not well thought out. The web interface gives you none of the information necessary to diagnose wireless client problems. No info on whether the device successfully connected to the wireless network you configured, no connection strength, no bit rate-- nothing. So it's not a surprise that customers who have a problem with client mode quickly give up and return this device.
Another hint about client mode: although the configuration gives you the impression that you must manually choose a wireless channel, the device will indeed scan all channels regardless of your setting. This is just another thing to confuse users.
Customer Review: Absolutely Phenomenal !!! Summary: 5 Stars
What can I say that the title doesn't already? D-Link is on top of there game with this product. Simple and to the point directions make setting up this device as easy as 1-2-3! I bought this device for my wife, as she travels a great deal. She is absolutely in love with it now! The wireless freedom in her hotel room more than makes up for the price. Not to mention when she must attend company conferences where she has a roommate. Now there is no scheduling broadband access. Simply plug the DWL-G730AP in and both her and her roommate are connected via the hotel broadband! The bottom line is that I have been in the IT industry for quite a few years now. The security of this device and its performance are phenomenal! I'm not quite sure why the first reviewer had such a bad time with his device, as the firmware is still at 1.0, which is what the device intially shipped with. Maybe he simply encountered quite a bit of wireless interference, or maybe he just happened to get a defective one? What I can vouch for is the one that my wife and I currently use, works beyond belief! Congrats D-Link on a phenomenal product!
Customer Review: Router mode is flawless, client mode a little tricky Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this for two reasons: 1) when I travel, I want to be able to use my PalmTX to connect to the Internet. I configured the Dlink router in Router mode while hooked up to my main computer. Once that was done, I connected the Dlink router to my main router, and I was able to connect my PalmTX to the Dlink easy as pie. However, 2) the other reason why I bought it was to connect an old laptop to my wireless network while in the living room. Configuration was easy, but it would not connect to my wireless network. I sent Dlink tech support an email, and they were quick to respond, but they basically gave me the usual advice--do a hard reset of the router. Which I had already done. Then it dawned on me that I had to switch the network adapter back to grabbing the IP address through DCHP (to access the Dlink config page of the Dlink router, you have to set it to a static IP.). In looking through the comments here, several other people did the same thing as I did. You would think that Dlink tech support would know to tell people to check this in client mode!!!
Customer Review: Worked perfectly Summary: 5 Stars
This product worked great for us. We had it shipped directly to our hotel in Panama City Beach Fl so we could all have internet in our room. We had stayed there before and knew the hotel wifi was spotty at best. When we arrived, I received the package and had it up and running in minutes and had it secured with WPA and MAC address filtering within about 15 minutes. We have two laptops, two iTouches, and 1 iPhone all connected and working great. I have an IT background and have set up several routers, etc. but I really think the most anyone with very basic IT skills could set it up. You do need to remember when you first try to connect to assign your self an IP address in the 192.168.# range. After you have configured the router by going through the appropriate Wizard at 192.168.0.30 you can then set your IP back to DHCP if you wish. The only other thing I can think of to remember is to be sure you turn the switch on the bottom to whatever function you are trying to set up. I only used it as a wireless router, but it has worked perfectly so far. Great Find!!!
Customer Review: Works great 90+% of the time Summary: 4 Stars
I am able to hook up to wireless networks without installing any software; a great boon since my IT Department at work will not provide computers with Wi-Fi or allow users to install software.
This works great almost all the time. You have to initially configure the travel router so DHCP server is on, then reboot the computer so it gets its IP address assigned from the travel router. Once you do this switch router modes and after the router reboots you can set up your connection to the wireless network. This part works very well. Sometimes, the computer will not get the address from the travel router and I have to retry. While a little inconvient sometimes, this is still a great solution if your laptop does not have Wi-Fi and you do not want to install any software. Unlike other "gaming" routers this one is powered off a USB port so it is as portable as the computer you connect it to.
Buy some velcro with adhesive backing so you can secure the travel router to the top of your laptop so you have one less loose item to worry about.
