Customer Review: Compact & Light...great for travel!
Summary: 4 Stars

THis is a GREAT travel router that I've been looking for in stores but nobody seems to carry or even really know about them. It is super compact, super light (less than a pound for the entire kit) and comes with a nice case so you don't have wires stuck all throughout your bag or briefcase. The only issue I had was the set up; I am somewhat tech savy but I had to get the router to adapt to my company laptop and internet connection. Had to have my I.T. help me, which took him about 5-10 minutes to set it all up. THe manual is not quite as descriptive as I think it should be for the initial set up.

Once you have it set up it is a piece of cake to use! Make sure you save the settings and it pretty becomes plug and play. I've used it traveling in hotels for work, on the road in field offices and even home. The router has incredible range and I strongly suggest this unit for anyone! I would say that it is easier to use than you might think and it has about the same range as a regular wireless router that you might use in your home or office.

Again, great purchase and well worth the few bucks it costs!! If you are on the road as much as I am, you need to have something this good with you!

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

I travel a lot and stay in many hotels that have only a wired hookup at the desk (mostly international). This product frees me up from sitting only at the desk and, more importantly, adds another level of security for my computer. The instructions could be better as I had to finally get on the internet and search for more detailed instructions than what came with the unit. Once I set it up at home with the password and security, I took it on the road and it worked perfectly. Just plugged it in and my laptop hooked up automatically. A word of caution: When you put the modem back into the carrying case, it will cause the small switch on the bottom to switch from "Router" mode (which is what you want in the hotel room) to "Access Point AP" mode. This caused me some confusion when I first plugged it in at the first hotel I stayed in after setting it up at home. My laptop didn't see the network name I had given the router so I thought everything had dumped out of the router and I needed to go through the setup process again. After some troubleshooting I thought to check the small switch on the bottom and, that was the problem. I switched it back to router mode and it worked perfect. Great product. Very pleased.

Customer Review: Works great as an AP client but tricky to configure
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this unit to allow machines access to WiFi networks without changing their configuration.

Using this device in client mode is a mind bender and not very well presented in the documentation. The process is this: first, you set your host computer to a static IP address on the 192.168.0.x network. Then, using your browser you go to 192.168.0.30 and log into the DWL-G730AP. After that, you configure the wireless side with the SSID, channel, and security mode. After updating the wireless configuration, save the configuration and the DWL-G730AP reboots. While the DWL-G730AP reboots, you change the IP configuration on the host machine to DHCP for its IP address and DNS. Then, you wait about two minutes for all the devices to sort themselves out. Eventually the host computer receives an IP address from the WiFi network and you are on the air.

As others have noted, if you are going to use this device on a network that uses WPA, you will need to flash the firmware to the latest revision. If the DWL-G730AP were sold with the latest firmware and the documentation included a better description of how to set up a host computer for client mode, I would give this unit 5 stars.

Customer Review: The Perfect Travel Companion
Summary: 5 Stars

I now have this device permently in my laptop bag. I can't go on my business trips without it. I'm so happy there is a little relatively inexpensive device like this that I can use.

The setup was easier than expected. The little manual switch onthe bottom helps with setting the device in the correct mode so you don't have to configure it via web browser everytime you want to use it as a wireless client, or AP, or router.

I usually use this as an AP plugged into an ethernet jack. I use it at school where there is an ethernet jack in the wall, but I want to sit somewhere else in the class. Because it's not always convenient to sit in the back corner because that is where the internet connection and power plugs are. Plus with this plugged into the wall other student in the room can use the wireless access to print to the room printer or to a seperate printer.

The carrying case that comes with this is very handy and compact. The device itself doesn't weigh much at all, and if you don't always need everything that comes in the case, you can leave some pieces at home.

Again, just a wonderful product that works like it is supposed to. Everytime.

Customer Review: Excellent Device
Summary: 5 Stars

I was skeptical at first to purchase this item. I read many reviews here on Amazon.com before I decided to give it a try. It had more good reviews than bad so I ordered it hoping that the reviews that spoke of how easy it was to set up as an Access Port were reliable. I am happy to say that I love this product. It was as simple as plugging it in to a wall outlet and an ethernet jack. I had several ethernet connnections in my apartment but wanted to have wireless Internet access for the i-Touch I recently bought and for my laptop computer. I set the switch to AP, plugged in the a/c adapter and connected the supplied ethernet cable and voila, I had wireless Internet. Now the signal is not super strong, but from one room to the next you will have no problems. I don't want the neighbors stealing my signal anyway. I didn't have to install any software or go through a modem or router, I only had to "connect" to d-link on my i-Touch and laptop when they picked up the wireless signal. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone just looking to make a small area wireless. I cannot attest to the other capabilities of this device because I am only using the one feature.
