Customer Review: Great for hotel rooms with paid wired Internet connections
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this travel router to solve one problem: sharing a wired Internet connection in hotel rooms that charge per day for access per connected computer. Everyone in our family brings a notebook PC along on trips. Many hotels charge daily rates for each PC connected for Internet access.

I just bought this router and it worked perfectly right out of the box! All I had to do was set the 3-way switch on the bottom of the unit to the ROUTER setting, plug it into the hotel's wired Ethernet port, hook up the power cord, log onto the router using my notebook PC through the default IP address, and then follow the simple wizard to enable security, etc. After the router rebooted, we were able to connect all three of our notebook PCs to our newly-created, secure wireless network and use the hotel's Internet connection, paying just one daily fee to the hotel.

The unit is very small and highly portable. The signal is certainly strong enough to easily reach anywhere in our hotel room. We haven't had any problems with a dropped connection, etc.

My only wish is that the router supported 802.11n, as that is the newer wireless standard that provides faster and more robust wireless network connections, but that really isn't important for what we are using it for: sharing a hotel room wired Internet connection on multiple PCs wirelessly.

Customer Review: Great little router - best of the bunch
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very happy with this device. It does exactly what it's supposed to do and it works. I've been a happy traveler using this for about 3 months now.

I struggled with Netgear's version of a travel router for several months before this and it was one painful experience after another. I swear, that Netgear travel router took years off my life. But then... D-Link saves the day!

What a difference!! This is a dream to use compared to the Netgear (which by the way is almost excactly the same as the 3Com - they both stink). This router is configurable with the kind of more advanced settings that you find on regular home routers. It's very stable, supports WPA very well, and doesn't flinch with multiple devices/users connected at once so, I love it.

One thing I noticed is that turning off UPnP really helped. Just go into the config and you'll find the setting to turn it off. I think UPnP doesn't always play well with Windows (ironic, huh?) so I always opt to turn it off. Again, the other routers in this class don't even allow you to configure things like UPnP. Can you tell I'm bitter about the Netgear? Just a little.

So, bottom line, this router works like a router should and the fact that it's smaller and much cooler looking than the others is just icing on the cake.

Great buy - highly recommended.

I had hoped that the Pocket Router would connect my Samsung DVD player to the internet. It may have worked, but I could not get past the first step of the set-up i.e., activate the router.

My computer could not connect to the IP address, given in manual, that would activate the router. I called technical support twice and learned that I had to synchronize the pocket router's settings with the settings for my home's wireless network. And when I travel, I must repeat this synchronization with the hotel's WiFi network. I spent about two hours trying to get the thing to work when I decided that my time was worth more than the 40.00 I paid for it. So I returned it to Amazon for a refund.

If you are looking for a device that will connect your TV to the internet, hold off until next year. According to some previews I received for the Consumer Electronic Show, which will be held in January 2011, Google and some others will introduce an inexpensive device that will access the internet from a modem (wired, wireless or via your home's electrical outlets), and connect to your TV via a HMDI port. The device comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse and will provide HD video with 5.1 surround audio. As internet TV advances, I expect that viewers would drop their cable or satellite services.

Customer Review: This is the best $44 I ever spent

I recently traveled to Spain for the first time with my Ipad, and when I got there, I was not able to use it because my room only had a wired Ethernet connection. It dawned on me that most hotels that I travel to only have wired ethernet in the rooms, so I needed an easy way to get wireless. A techie friend of mine recommended this device and with a little research, I bought it. The unit is small and comes with a nice case to carry everything that you need. I am relatively savy with routers and switches, so setup was a breeze. It took me 10 minutes to configure the device in both Access Point and Router modes. I suggest using the same SSID and encryption key for both, so your device will connect either way. I just came back from vacation with my family and sure enough, my room had free wired ethernet. I plugged the device in and within 20 seconds, I was online and working. My wife was able to use it with her Ipad also at the same time, and my guest used his laptop too. It is fantastic. Performance was great. I was able to make Skype Phone calls with perfect clarity and no distortion. I cannot give this device enough praise. One observation that I have is that for such a small device, it gets pretty warm. It is not going to melt or anything, but I was surprised. Buy it and enjoy.

Customer Review: Hard to setup but it works great when it works
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this years ago for $40 online only to find out a month later that they were on sale at BB for $20 and later $15 at Compusa with rebate. That was a bummer! The other bummer thing is that setting it up as a wireless adapter for my ReplayTV DVR (so it can download the TV guide wirelessly) was a total pain! I have to call tech support (India and Philippines) 3 times! They even had to send me to level 2 tech support to get this working. When I got a new Panasonic TV last year I tried connecting the adapter so it can stream video from Amazon or download updates wirelessly. I had to do a different setup and it took me a while to do it. However, when I set it up back to my DVR, it will not connect to my wireless network anymore. Something got screwed up and I can't call tech support anymore because they will charge me $1 per minute since it's way beyond it's warranty. This thing is still selling online everywhere after all these years and the price has never come down to that $15 level. It's a nifty little gadget but it's very temperamental. That's why I give it 2 stars.

There are a couple of other devices like it on sale from TrendNET and Asus (and the D-link DAP-1350) but not sure if their setup are more user-friendly.
