Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DWA-652 Xtreme N Wireless Notebook Adapter DraftCustomer Review: Didn't work Summary: 2 Stars
My rating for this D-Link adapter, might be a little unfair.
I have used and am using D-Link products and love them.
I have upgraded my network to 80211n and wanted to do the same with my laptop. So I ordered the DWA-652.
The first problem I encountered after installing the driver software, was after the reboot. It changed the way Windows XP Pro opened, and I was unable to connect to my network.
E-mailed D-link. They had me download latest update, do the un-install and install update.
Windows opened properly, but didn't fix connection.
After 4 more D-link attempts to resolve problem, they stopped responding.
I re-installed my D-link WNA-2330 and everything worked fine.
This issue will not prevent me from buying D-link in the future and will always recommend their products to others.
I can't say enough good about AMAZON.COM. They are a wonderful site to do business.
I have bought sdhc cards, cameras, and printers and more. Always with satisfaction.
Their return site was flawless.
Another satisfied and future return customer.
Customer Review: Great Speed; Poor Range Summary: 2 Stars
In the last week, I have gone through two of these items and have been very disappointed with the range of them. My Linksys router, Linksys wireless repeater, and aged WEP-encryption only adapter card were all getting old and needed to be upgraded. So, I purchased everything in the Xtreme N family only to receive this latest disappointment. With D-Link's DIR-655 router and this DWA-652 notebook adapter, I was expecting to be able to get the full range without the use of the repeater. However, from 50-feet away, the signal strength is minimal, and from 80-feet away, there is none! My HP laptop that has an internal Intel Pro Wireless card picks up the signal from 80-feet away that D-Link's own product in the same family-line can't! This is all despite the guarantee of 6x the range if I use the same brand and family of products.
Conclusion:
Don't let those guarantee's fool you. If your range is relatively low (< 50-feet), then you won't be disappointed with the speed this offers. If your distance from your access point is much more than that, go for something else.
Customer Review: Works Great, easy to set up!!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been on the computer for a long, long time. But, I am no expert, in ways I consider myself a computer moron, especially when it comes to things like setting on a network etc., well, this turned out to be super easy, after one setback. when I attempted to set up the router the first time It would not work, But I thought that might happen, we had had a close lighting strike and my modem was never quite the same, so I called up AT&T and they confirmed that the modem was defective ad overnight-ed me another modem. It took an hour to set up the Modem, mostly running the software. Now having done that the D Link Router was easy. You just put the software in and follow the directions and bam, I think it took 10 minutes total, and another 10 to set on the receiving connector Card for my lap top Xtreme N Wireless Cardbus, adapter, Draft 802.11N . and this D link 130 wireless USB adapter for a second desktop computer D-Link DWA-130 Wireless N USB Adapter . I am on the lap top now and everything works great.
Customer Review: If your laptop has a PCMCIA slot, this will get you 300 Mbps. Summary: 5 Stars
I have a D-Link DIR-655 router along with several DWA-142 USB wireless adapters. For my HP nc8430, I needed a Draft-N adapter to utilize the greater speed of the router. I bought this, then witnessed what another reviewer stated--it won't support speeds greater than 54Mbps if you use WEP encryption. So this past week or two, I've been changing out adapters and encryption so as to check his report and it's true--employ WPA-PSK (either WPA1 or WPA2), and you'll get 300Mbps. You have to have a PCMCIA slot in your laptop (maybe there's an equivalent Express slot model, I don't know, but this won't fit in it), but if you do, disable the wireless radio in your laptop and after installing D-Link's latest drivers, use XP's Zero Wireless Utility--I think I missed a word there--to configure it (ah, Configuration). After that, you'll be flying. Shop prices--these things are all over the place, but the technology--Draft or not--is stable and secure.
Customer Review: Works Great - 300 Mbps WiFi Connections. Summary: 5 Stars
I use this in conjunction with my DSL service and couldn't be more satisfied. For home use, I have a 24" iMac which I have connected to an Apple AirPort Extreme base station via built-in ethernet (i.e - hard wired). For work, I have a Toshiba laptop, TWO STORIES UP, and connect via WiFi to the AirPort base station. The laptop is running Windows XP SP2. I use a D-Link DWA-652 notebook adapter and CONSISTENTLY connect at 300.0 Mbps! Both the AirPort base station and the D-Link adapter are built on the 802.11n draft, and work great together. ONE BIG BUT (so to speak)...the 802.11n draft does NOT support WEP encryption. You can still connect with WEP enabled, but it will be at 802.11g-like speeds (i.e. - 56Mbps). Not using WEP has its obvious disadvantages, but the WiFi connection speed of 300.0 Mbps is outstanding.
