Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DIR-635 RangeBooster N 650 RouterCustomer Review: Serious issues with WPA, no response from D-Link tech support! Summary: 3 Stars
First, let me tell you about myself. I have always been a fan of D-Link and this router was purchased to replace the DI-634M (less than a year old) simply because I needed 802.11n compatibility and it appeared as if the QoS was better for my VoIP Asterisk server which really puts quite a bit of traffic through. I downloaded the PDF manual and reviewed the configuration screens. It looked as though this upgrade would be a worthwhile investment.
Now however, I am beginning to have some buyer's remorse as this product has some serious issues with WPA/WPA2 compatibility. Granted, on other routers you could simply enable WEP until a firmware fix was released, but this device has three options: WPA and WPA2 (auto), WPA2 only, or None. The problem is that the "WPA/WPA2 (auto)" mode doesn't allow my Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4) to authenticate, nor does the "WPA2 Only" mode. In addition, my AirPort for my iTunes link won't authenticate either!! Because I conduct business and personal traffic on my laptop, I can't risk the "None" option and open my network activity to interception while also opening my network up for anyone in the neighborhood to steal!! I have the latest version... Hardware Version: A1 Firmware Version: 1.06, 2006/06/29
I have sent a technical support e-mail to D-Link over a week ago and I have still not received a response (not even an automated response). You would think more testing would have discovered this serious flaw (seeing as how there is no *other* encryption to check, I wonder did they test anything at all?) If you are considering this product, I would strongly caution you to wait a while. Either that, or immediately contact D-Link first and ask when this WPA incompatibility will be resolved. What is the point of a wireless router when the wireless half doesn't work? I'm going back to my D-Link DI-634M. It has no WPA issues and great range already, I've returned the DIR-635 back to Amazon!
