Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DBT-120 Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter

Customer Review: Big waste of time.
Summary: 1 Stars

Software did not install smoothly out of the box. Nothing that I tired worked, so I called their tech support.

Ten minutes on hold, and I get some kid who does not speak English. He says that he's having technical problems of his own. He's going to transfer me directly to level two support. More time on hold and I get a woman with WORSE English. It took us forever to open a case. Then she told me to re-install the software.

I told her that I'd already done that.

So she told me to reboot and re-install.

I told her that I'd done that too.

So she told me to go to their web site and download updated drivers, then reboot and reinstall.

I checked the site. The software hasn't been updated since 2004. She's telling me to download the same drivers that I have on the CD-ROM.

That's when I decided to return the product.

Total time online with tech support was over 40 minutes. This has been a huge waste of time. I've been happy with D-Link in the past, but this is laughable. Looking at other recent reviews, it appears I'm not the only one having problems. Fortunately, Amazon has a generous return policy.

Customer Review: Get a different brand
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this adapter in order to use a bluetooth headset with my computer. Starting off, the installation process was incredibly long and definitely not seamless. Once it was finally installed, my headset was able to connect, but no audio was transmitted to or from my headset. My phone was also able to connect, but the connection was incredibly slow. It took several minutes to transfer several small files, which I could transfer in seconds over USB.

After being unable to get my headset to work with the adapater, I decided to return it and try a different brand. Uninstalling the software was a pain. Using the uninstall package left a ton of files and drivers still installed, and I had to go through and remove them manually. Then I returned the D-Link adapter and got a Linksys adapter instead. The Linksys adapter worked with my headset perfectly with no fuss, and the software was much more lightweight and user friendly.

The only good thing I have to say about this whole thing is that Amazon has a very good return service. There was no problem at all with returning the adapter, and the only effort I had to put into it was dropping the package off at the Post Office.

Customer Review: Handles the bluetooth basics on a Mac: keyboard and mouse
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first bought my Mac Pro I got it without the bluetooth option failing to see that a wireless keyboard and mouse were very likely in my future. Anyone who knows the Mac towers knows that Apple makes it very easy to swap certain parts (Hard Drives, RAM) and VERY difficult to swap or add other parts (like internal Bluetooth, which requires you to entirely disassemble your computer using special tools).

The quick and cheap way to add bluetooth is to go with a USB Bluetooth adapter such as this one.

I first tried a Belkin adapter but ran into problems where bluetooth would hang while swapping batteries in my Magic Mouse, requiring me to restart my computer to get it to work again. (BAD!)

The D-Link was my second attempt to add bluetooth to my machine. I ended up with a Rev C that was positively plug-and-play with no problems whatsoever. I plugged it into the back of my Cinema display which puts the adapter about 6" from the Apple keyboard and mouse.

After a few seamless battery changes later I'm sold.

I have NOT tried this with bluetooth headphones or other bluetooth devices so I can't speak to how well those may or may not work.

Customer Review: The device gets 5 stars... but the technology doesn't
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this bluetooth radio for about a year now, and it's really worked just like it's supposed to. The software that comes with it fights a little with Windows XP, if you have all of the XP patches (including SP2)... I ended up uninstalling the software that came with it, because XP wouldn't relenquish control. No matter, XP controls the device great, and it's easy enough to set up new devices.

I use it with my phone and a few other trinkets that pass across my desk, and the bluetooth technology is still pretty inconsistent. There are too many standards and too many gateways that can be implemented per device (or not). Example, the audio gateway would be great for my phone, and would allow me use my headphones and mic for phone calls--except that the audio gateway service doesn't exist on my phone, so that's no joy.

Keep in mind that every device manufacturer can implement any one of many (nearly 100) bluetooth services, or they can devise their own and then release their own hardware to support it. This technology needs more standardization and that 'gotcha' can cause frustration for many people unfamiliar with the standard.

Customer Review: Excellent device
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great adapter which is high quality, and relatively low price. I use it with a laptop running windows XP and a Hewlett-Packard iPAQ 2215.

This adapter is very easy to setup and all of the necessary instructions and software come with the adapter. Setup is a farily automated process and the installation wizard and instruction booklet will guide you through the process.

The adapter lets you use a variety of different services such as internet connection sharing, ActiveSynch, file transfer, and others. All of these services can be enabled/disabled at any point after installation and configuring them is for the most part a simple procedure which can be done by following the instruction on the computer.

The adapter has a very good range of twenty to thirty yards, which is about the maximum a PDA can handle, so connecting to the adapter won't be an issue. Several of my friends and I have PDAs, so I got this adapter so we could all use my laptop as a wireless hub to get online. None of use have had any problems and it can handle several devices using it at once.

As an added bonus the adapter comes with a free USB extension cable.
