Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem/Wireless Router

Customer Review: Who needs "N"? It's "G" for me!
Summary: 4 Stars

OK, so wireless N has been around a while now, but for my home wifi setup, all my devices are still using wireless G - and very well at that I might add. So it makes more sense to me to buy an older product at a nicely discounted rate.

This review is more about initial ease of setup and performance. I cannot speak to reliability since I have only had the device 3 days as of this writing. Only a couple of reviewers have commented here that the device might be short lived - not enough to thwart me.

The D-Link DSL-2640B replaced my older Linksys WRT54GS router and my Siemens Speedstream 4100 ADSL Modem (kept upstairs to allow ethernet cable connections for my XBOX 360 & Blu-ray player). My wifi signal kept dropping downstairs in the kitchen where my wife and I like to have coffee and browse the web (her on a notebook and me on my netbook). I thought it might be the router going bad, but when I setup the DSL-2640B, I got an even lower signal to the kitchen than with my Linksys - to the point that I could not connect to the Internet at all. So I was immediately disappointed with the range - but at least all the other wifi devices in the house, both upstairs and downstairs (2 computers, a printer and a Wii) received a solid, steady signal with great Internet connectivity as before.

To help solve the weak signal dilemna, I wound up ordering a range boosting antenna for the DSL-2640B (still waiting for that to arrive). But as a result of the range issue, I was prompted to experimentally convert my old router into a repeater using the DD-WRT firmware having recently read an article about the process. And voila! My old router became useful as a repeater working in tandem with the DSL-2640B bringing a super strong signal to the Kitchen and everywhere else downstairs! So don't throw out that old router!

Back to the DSL-2640B. Setup of the modem aspect for Internet was painless! I did not even use the disc, just went straight to the Wizard in the device's html configuration pages. AT&T is my isp in Houston, Texas (with them since they used [...] as their domain). My biggest fear was that the new modem would be a pain to connect and I would have to get on the phone with AT&T tech support. NOT! The modem did as advertised and automatically configured itself based on the needs of my isp. All I had to do was enter my Internet logon username & password. Boom... I was in!

As for setting up the rest of my wireless devices, it was every bit just as easy. If you have fundamental knowledge of a router and have set one up before, you will not need the disc for this either. It all just worked as it should. All devices connected easily both wirelessly and those connected with ethernet cable.

Overall, the configuration tool is a bit outdated looking (I think it's based on firmware that's a few years old now), but serves the purpose fine with a little looking around.

As for use with an XBOX 360 (connected via ethernet cable), I simply put the 360 in the DMZ (using the permanent IP address that I assigned it in the 360's system settings) and boom... open NAT. This does not open a door to the rest of your Network, just the 360 which is not yet known to have ever been hacked as a result of being in a DMZ. QOS was not quite so obvious and clear to setup for the 360, but I did create a simple Traffic Class Name for the "rule" (XBOXLive), checked Enable Differentiated Service Configuration, selected "High" under Assign ATM Transmit Priority and under SET-1 listed the IP address I had assigned to the XBOX 360 for DMZ purposes in the Source IP Address field.... and hit apply then save. Anything more complex than that and I won't know what to do. I haven't tested those settings yet, so I'm not sure the degree it will help steady my online multiplayer while my wife's on Skype, etc. We'll see.

For a home network where wireless N hasn't become the norm yet and may not for sometime to come.... this wireless G device seems to be a great all-in-one combo wifi router / adsl modem. At this point, for a basic home network, I have to recommend the DSL-2640B with an overall thumbs up!

***Update***
**9/28/2010*

I still stand by my review above and 4 star rating, but I have to update here with an issue that I encountered and was able to overcome. I am not sure if the issue is related to my computer's configuration or the router's firmware. BUT... For the first time after running the DSL-2640B 24/7 for about 10 days solid, I decided to give it a hard reboot using the power button. Well, when it rebooted, it had reset itself to factory defaults! Fortunately, I knew very well by now how to configure it. Once reconfigured, I decided to see how it would handle a reboot command from within its own UI. It rebooted and again... reset itself to factory defaults. Frustrating. I had used Google Chrome initially to set it up. I tested this with IE and ensured that I had no anti-virus or similar programs running at the time. I could not even get it to update its own saved configuration settings backup - kept asking me to enter valid filename.

So, with a little research I upgraded the firmware to a much newer version from the UK. And now everything is much more stable in general and I am able to reboot any way I choose and it retains my saved settings just fine.

Overall, I still go with 4 stars as mentioned. But, perhaps for the beginner... 3 stars.
