Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link 4-Port RangeBooster Wireless-N RouterCustomer Review: A very good router Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased a d-link dir 625 80211n Router from Amazon in early April 09. When the router arrived I hooked it up and in about 2 minutes had my wired network back up and running with full internet access. However the wireless part did not work at all.
After about 20 minutes on the phone with D-Link Tech Support I was told that the router was beyond repair. I contacted Amazon via the web and in about 30 seconds had a replacement router ordered and an RMA for the defective unit. My replacement arrived the next day. I hooked it up and in about 3 minutes had my entire network, both wired and wireless, up and running.
The router was very easy to configure manually. If you've ever done the setup yourself you'll have no problems with this one. The defaults for most settings worked just fine for my needs.
For the Wireless, the speed and range are incredible. I can get a full signal at the end of my driveway. My old Linksys wireless would not even reach the front porch.
Customer Review: not reliable connection (random hangs) Summary: 2 Stars
I used this for about a month now. This "wireless" router (DIR-625) definitely has issues with maintaining connection flow as it randomly (and annoyingly) hangs for few seconds (5-10s usually, sometimes longer).
These hangings (No response) happen while you browsing or even during download / file transfer (so sometimes I have to start filer transfer over as it destroys ssh connection). Random delays are also very annoying as you trying to work remotely (eg. when I connect remotely to my office machine) as they affect typing in the terminal window. None of the issues are there if I plug the same Ethernet cable (with Internet) to my computer, only when I'm connected (wirelessly) through this D-Link router.
For the price (50-60 dollars) I think the quality of this router is not acceptable.
These random and annoying delays in browsing or file transfer will definitely make your work less effective. I would not recommend using this router to anyone, the decision is yours.
Customer Review: Macintosh Users - Some extra help required Summary: 4 Stars
Installing this with only Macintoshes is not plug and play--at least it wasn't for me. I had problems connecting this to my Comcast modem. I called Comcast and they told me to call D-Link. The D-Link guy was thrown for a while since I was on a Mac, and led me round and round and round getting no where. Then he finally asked me what firmware was installed. I told him the the config web site said 3.04. He then realized I needed to update the firmware to 3.06. I had to piggy back on a neighbor's wifi, download the new firmware, upload it to the router, and then restart everything. Once I had 3.06 firmware, everything worked fine.
If you are not somewhat geeky and are on Macs only...you might want to pass on this router.
Once I had it hooked up, it took about 15 minutes for it to stabilize (the reception was up and down, up and down) and it has since performed very well. <knock on wood> I even have had no problems with a Cisco VPN I have to use for work.
Customer Review: Easy to set up, connect to, fast interface Summary: 5 Stars
This wireless router replaced an older single antenna, slower model from another vendor. So far this new D-Link is great.
First, the ports are well labeled, all the connections were obvious and easy.
Next, configuring the router through the web interface was simple. The router has a ton of configuration options but the wizards made setup easy and the options were well explained in the PDF manual to make changes. It connected just great to my DSL modem and immediately was online.
The web configuration itself is fast too, that's especially nice when you're setting up a router the first time and have a lot of changes. My old router had a slow configuration page, D-Links is great.
The wired ports work great work great with no configuration required. I've easily connected multiple wireless clients to it (phones, gaming system, and laptop). All told, it's just what a wireless router should be: simple, fast, and hopefully forgotten for a long time now.
Customer Review: a little hassle but the results were worth it Summary: 4 Stars
My old g router was not reaching parts of my house. I read reviews of available alternatives and decided to go with this n router, because it seemed to have a good range, it was reasonably priced and I figured someday I'd get a new laptop that would need an n router. I was concerned with setting it up (I have no special computer expertise)... It turned out to be mixed. Using the CD I set up 2 of the laptops in the house without any trouble. The third was a nightmare. However (as I read in another review), after spending a couple hours trying to get it to work, I just left it overnight. I tried it in the morning and it worked immediately. Bottom line, the router has increased the range so I can now use laptops (all g's; even the ones with a little less sensitivity) in every room in the house. Its been too cold to try out in the yard...but I expect it would work there as well. A little hassle, but the result was well worth it.
