Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DGS-2208 8-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop SwitchCustomer Review: Hardware great, software not Summary: 4 Stars
This hardware does just what it's supposed to do and requires no installation other than connecting the cables. It's not a router, so it won't be blasting all the network traffic out to everybody on your network; it only sends traffic to the network device that is supposed to get the traffic. This reduces or eliminates extraneous traffic and allows better throughput. On the other hand, it's not a router, so you shouldn't use it to connect to a cable modem, for instance, and it won't create unique IP's for your various devices. This little tidbit is buried pretty deep within the documentation (what! You didn't already know that? What are you doing in the network business then???)
The software that comes with it, Network Magic, performs some useful functions, like making a network map, but bizarrely, it doesn't include this very switch in your network map. Instead, it shows your computers and other devices attached directly to your router. Cisco is running the show now, and you'll have to ask them why they include software with a switch that doesn't recognize that the switch exists....I've uninstalled all the software. You really don't need it anyway.
Customer Review: Killed my net connection speeds Summary: 3 Stars
I bought and installed this switch when the previous 5-port D-Link gigabit switch I had in place died. (I also kind of needed the extra ports anyway so the death was a little fortuitous.) As soon as I plugged it in, I saw a dramatic reduction in speeds to the Internet. LAN speeds were fine but WAN download speeds went from >10MBit/s to <2MBit/s. Oddly, upload speeds were unaffected.
Several hours of diagnostics and the only hitch appeared to be the new switch. Thinking I had a bad product, I returned it and got a new one. Same problem. Went out and bought a Linksys switch (model: SD2008), plugged it in, problem solved.
I've been a dedicated D-Link user for years but I'm thinking of giving that up. The 5-port switch I was replacing was just over a year old and the one before that (also D-Link) had all kinds of connectivity issues. It's an unmanaged switch, it should just work!
Anyways, I gave it 3 stars because there's a possibility that I got two bad boxes in a row (there are far too many good reviews here) and the LAN speeds were great. If you buy one, make sure you can take it back easily.
Customer Review: Great when it is working Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this about 4 months ago based on the great reviews. This had been working great, just like the reviews noted. Unfortunately, the switch just died (I had version C). Looking back, I suspect the switch started a downward spiral about 2 months after I bought it, but all this time I thought it was my router. The switch became flakey, working most of the time - but not all the time (I now see that my hardwired components switched to wireless automatically). The flaky-ness increased over the following 2 months until the unit just died. Actually, it is not totally dead - it is that the downtime is not greater than the up-time.
The good news of the failure is that there is a 3-year warranty and DLink will send me a replacement unit (I have to pay to ship the dead unit back). I'll work with them on that after I receive a new one. So, it is good they stand behind their product, but unfortuneate I had to find that out they stand behind their product. If I had to do it again, I'd probably look for more robust solution - as I will not have connectivity for a week while this exchange happens.
Customer Review: earlier hardware version A2, good switch, but warmish, and no vertical stand Summary: 3 Stars
My switch is an earlier hardware revision, A2. I see no problems with speed. I expect that some of the features of the later (C1) green designation, is already present in my version. It appears to switch off those ports which are not presently in use. Overall I am fairly happy with the switch and have been thinking about replacing it with another later revision. However I am far from happy that it does not include a vertical stand, and when I requested through D-Link's spare part program three vertical stands, their response was fifteen each including shipping and handling. I was buying three as I wanted one for a DGS-2208 and two for my DGS-2205's. Forty five dollars for something that should have come included with the switches and my likelihood of epigastric regurgitation goes way up. Even though I am ordering three at the same time, there's no reduction in shipping costs, so I feel I know which gesture D-Link has in mind. I've developed into a loyal customer having six D-Link routers and switches and an antenna, but I can thank D-Link for reminding me of the value of competition.
Customer Review: works perfect with minor cons Summary: 4 Stars
Pros
- low power as advertised - measured the power consumption using kill-a-watt with 2 NAS connected to the switch. The reading was 2 Watt. Swapped the switch to Netgear GS605 (5-port gigabit switch), the reading was 5 Watt. D-link also really does power saving, I disconnect one NAS from the switch, power drops to 1 Watt, and I disconnect the last NAS, power reading drops to 0 Watt. Since I NAS running 24/7, power saving is important as it adds up the cost, I dumped m Netgear gigabit switch and swapped to Dlink
- Plug and Play, Reliable - the thing just worked. I have owning one since Dec 2007, it's been running 24/7 and it does not fail on me yet. I purchased another two recently to expand NAS home network.
Cons
- Outdated outside design - perhaps D-link could work a bit more on on the cosmetic appearance. This switch probably blend into work environment ok but for home I personally think Netgear GS605/GS608 offer a more friendly appearance for home network switch.
- No vertical stand - why D-link doesn't provide a vertical stand for this switch?
