Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of D-Link DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch

Customer Review: Very good throughput for a small footprint
Summary: 5 Stars

My model is the DGS-2205 with the 5V power adapter. Like a previous reviewer, I noticed that I wasn't getting anywhere near gigabit speeds to my LaCie Ethernet Raid device. Well, that's because the LaCie Ethernet Raid Device is a slow pig.

After connecting my Mac Book Pro and my Mac Pro to the switch, I started offloading data to the Mac Pro.

Sustained throughput was 320 megabits per second with long bursts up to 720 megabits per second. At this point, the hard drive on the Macbook Pro was the bottleneck. Normally, I don't care for D-link products, but this little switch is quite the gem.

I've also noticed no noise from the unit, even when transferring large amounts of data at near wire speed.

Summary: 5 Stars

I connected this switch to my home network and did not need to configure anything as I expected. Now I have a few more LED's lit in my computer room. I am currently using only one port but so far that port seems to work well enough. That port is used to connect my Directv HD DVR. I am still able to watch DVR recordings on my computer using the DIRECTV2PC application with only a few (2) very minor screen or sound stutters. I have watched three shows and the two stutter problems only manifested themselves on the first viewing. I also have a few other optional computer services running that I can suspend if I suspect they might be part of the problem. Bottom line - I like this product and think it was priced fairly.

Customer Review: Second D-Link DGS I own...
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned an 8-port for over a year, and I'm very happy with the second 5-port I just bought here at Amazon. I've never had any problems with either, and they don't heat up or use a lot of electricity. I haven't measured, and I may be making these statements with only a vague feeling, but they work perfectly anyway. I'd recommend them to anyone, especially since you just plug them in, and you're done, so even beginners won't go wrong. No settings, no reboots, they just work, unlike many other network and computer componants. The one tiny gripe I have is that the display LEDs that turn from yellow to green when you're on highest speed on each line are a bit tough to see at an angle when mounted on a wall.

Summary: 4 Stars

This is a nice hub at a nice price. It is quick, small, and generates very little heat.

The one thing I would ask d-link to change is the lights on the front display. The little round light changes color based on the speed of the link so you know what speed each port is operating at. That is great, but the lights are a bit hard to see. I is like the light source is down a tunnel and you have to look at it just right to see it well. I would not make them brighter (waste of electricity) just closer to the surface of the case so that you do no have to look on "just the right angle" to see them. I would also make the colors higher contrast so you can determine which speed more easily.

Customer Review: Worked great... for a couple of years.
Summary: 3 Stars

It worked as expected for a little over two years (26 months), and then just died. I had it connected to a UPS and hadn't had any issues previously, but one day my connection went down and when I inspected the switch I noticed I couldn't get any of the ports to work. Two of the indicator lights are always on (even with no cables connected to them) but they're all dead.

I read that some other reviewers had issues with their power converters, but I don't know if that's my case; I haven't had the chance to buy another one and see if it works.

So, bottomline, it has a good price and works very well for some time, but there are definitely some reliability concerns.
