Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of CyberHome CH-DVD 300S Progressive-Scan DVD Player , Silver

Customer Review: Inexpensive but flaky
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this DVD player because it was cheap and small. It fit perfectly atop my mini audio system. However, I decided to return it today because while watching a brand-new DVD, the skipping got progressively worse. It played the first half of the movie flawlessly, but then started to skip more and more. I removed the disc to check for any flaws or fingerprints. Finding none, I put the disc back in and used scene selection in the menu to go back to the chapter I was watching. I selected the chapter and nothing happened. However, I couldn't stop the disc, either. All I could do was power down and try again. I still couldn't skip to the chapter. I turned the unit off and on again and tried using the fast forward button to advance chapter by chapter, but at about chapter 15, it froze yet again. I ended up having to watch the last ten minutes of the movie on my laptop.

Since the resume function doesn't work like it should, either; you need to be able to use the chapter search function. Since that doesn't work well, it's going back to WalMart, and I might just have to live with a full-size player instead.

Customer Review: Great when it worked, but.....
Summary: 2 Stars

We bought this product on the recommendation of a friend, as it was dual voltage and could be programmed to play DVDs from any region (we move around a lot).

It worked great for the first 4 months, then one day had no sound. Although I spent 40 minutes on hold to Cyberhome's customer support line, they were helpful and I was able to get it sent to their warehouse for repairs the next day (albeit at a cost of $10 in postage out of my pocket!). I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived back within 2 weeks and was working.

Famous last words...it worked once. The next day, the power wouldn't even come on. Tried and tried but to no avail. Decided it was time to e-mail customer support again, this time requesting that they pay the postage. I am currently waiting to hear from them regarding this. If they won't come to the party, I figure we'll just trash it and get a better player.

I'm really disappointed that we've had problems, because it really was a great little unit when it worked!!! I hope we just got the lemon and that others are pleasantly surprised by the product.

Customer Review: Akai in My Eye
Summary: 3 Stars

The hidden menu "secrets" suggest that this comes from the same Chinese manufacturer of the Akai. These contraptions are cheap but fair valued. In response to an earlier review about the unit's eventually hanging up, they eventually will. The little tinker toy type motor spinning at a gazillion rpms needs additional lubrication. A slathering of WD-40 into a frozen motor has kept an Akai DVD200BL working fine to this day. Okay, the oil flew in all directions, but the laser lense cleaner and DVD wipes polished off that mess. One has to open the cabinet to do this and loosen the driver, but no disconnection of electrical/tronic parts has to occur. As long as the cabinet is open, a dab of petroleum jelly on the slower moving, plastic parts makes for a quiet machine. Jellying the metal ways for the laser lense retards its movement. If resistance to leave well enough alone proves futile, just touch the light weight oil to the bars. Then close up the cabinet and plug it back in. You did remember to unplug it, right?

Three stars, maybe three and a quarter--a good deal.

Customer Review: Nice with a great price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this little DVD player a few years ago and I'm still not disappointed. I was drawn in by it's ability to play CD-RWs and CD-Rs, thinking I could pull up videos burned onto these disks. That didn't work, it plays MP3 tracks off the disks just fine, and I learned that videos are what DVD-Rs are for.

My only complaints are that the remote is tiny tiny and after moving the DVD player from my bedroom (where I was the only person using it) to the living room (where everyone in the household now uses it) the tiny remote has gone missing. I knew it would happen eventually, I'm just glad it too so long to come about. I actually came onto Amazon today to find a replacement remote, because some DVDs are pretty hard to get started without one. My other complaint is that the shelf takes a moment to open up for receiving and retrieving the DVDs. It's not really a big deal, but if an impatient 15 year old starts pressing the open button multiple times in a row, I'm sure that may cause some sort of damage to the mechanism.

Customer Review: October 2006
Summary: 1 Stars

This dvd player is potentially a great, cheap and versatile machine BUT...

The two i bought from Worldwide Distributers were faulty. I have a friend who owns a CH-DVD 300 which works perfectly with my Region 2 (English) DVDs. I have a CyberHome DVD player in England which works perfectly as well. The two machine i received didnt work very well and didnt play some discs at all. This is why i would recommend spending a bit more on another machine. After returning two players i decided to buy a Philips DVP5140 (Multiformat DVD Player with Divx, MP3, Windows Media Support) which with a code to allow it to play all regions works perfectly! It cost $60 with free shipping through amazon so wasn't actually much more expensive than the other player! (See the reviews of this player for the code!)

I would also like to say that there was nothing wrong with the service from Worldwide Distributors and that they refunded most of the shipping costs. The problem was ONLY with the DVD players they sent me.
