Customer Review: Bad Disc Error - possible fix
Summary: 2 Stars

BAD DISC ERROR - possible fix

After about 8 months just like the other reviewer it stopped working.

I kept getting bad disc error on a new DVD I bought. I tried good discs that worked before but now got the same Bad Disc error.

This is not the first time I had problems loading. Previously, unplugging and plugging it in again sometimes corrected the problem.

This time after two weeks of Bad Disc errors, I was about to toss it when I decided what the heck, I'll check inside to see if it's dirty or something.

FIRST I UNPLUGGED THE UNIT.

I removed the 6 screws holding the cover. You may have to pull the sides out a bit if it catches to lift it off.

With my expertise knowledge. *eyeroll* I nudged the lense mechanism. It apparently slides to read the discs.

I plugged the DVD in and loaded a disc again to see what happens. The lense slid under the tray and started reading the disc. I'll take the elation of dumb luck over the satisfaction calculated knowledge any day! lol

So hopefully this will last a little longer. But at least I can use it again for now ...

I am downrating it to 2 stars solely on the bad disc error. The viewing quality and performance is decent and covered by other reviewers.

Customer Review: Plays Everything!
Summary: 5 Stars

I make short independent films and burn them on DVD's. The CyberHome CH-DVD 300S DVD player has no problem playing them. This is in contrast to some of my other friend's DVD players (usually some older "name-brands" that took sides in the DVD+R or DVD-R format debate), would have problems playing my home-recorded movies (skipping, hiccuping, freezing, popping of the image or sound). With the price under $40 how can you go wrong? If the CyberHome CH-DVD 300S performs, that's the bottom line. Forget the name brands unless you want a 5-disc multichanger, or advanced features. For those that complained in other reviews about quality issues with this unit, All I can say is that there will always be some percentage of 'dead-on-arrival' or 'infant mortality' with ALL electronics. That's why you have 15 to 30 days to return the product to the store for a full refund. All I can say is that I have had mine for a year with no problems. I also have read in the reviews about this unit's multi-region capability. This is very critical if you are an art-house movie buff, considering that some cool films can only be found overseas. Now with the Internet and outlets like eBay, you can get films from all over world delivered to your door, and then set the proper 'region' with this DVD player - and you're all set.

Customer Review: Good for the Sake of Having a DVD Player
Summary: 4 Stars

I was a little nervous about purchasing this item because of all the bad reviews, but in my experience, the product works fine. The reason why I bought this is that I knew that my sister wanted a DVD player, but I knew she wouldn't be using it every day. If you're looking for something that's going to constantly be used, you may want to consider doing more DVD player hunting before you purchase this one. My sister has had no problems with it overheating or eating her DVDs (if it does this, there is an emergency slot I believe to retrieve the DVD); you just have to keep the room it's in well-ventilated like you'd do for any of your electronic devices. Also, if you accidentally lose or break the remote control, just go to the website to order a new one or if you have any problems with your DVD player go there as well (www.cyberhome.com). If you're giving this to somebody as a gift, make sure you test it out first; that way if it's dead on arrival as some some people in the reviews have stated, you can easily return it and get refunded. Overall, my sister is completely satisfied with how the DVD player works. Only once did the DVD pause a little bit, but it wasn't even that bad and to be honest with you, I have a DVD/VHS player by Panasonic and once in a while it does the same thing.

Customer Review: Loading problem
Summary: 1 Stars

I strongly recommend not to buy this product. I have ordered three pieces of the same product. I have gone through many reviews before ordering. I was convinced with the reviews and was very happy to have a DVD player which is compatible with nearly all the formats and coming for cheap. But never I thought the quality of the product would be more cheaper than the price it quotes. After receiving the players, one of the player was not working. Remote as well as front panel control were not working as they should be. I returned the defective piece. The other two looked fine.

I took them to India and started using them. First day they worked fine. Next day both the players found to be not working. After putting a disc in the player the display showed a message saying Loading... on the TV screen for a long time and displayed a blank screen after 20 minutes. Sometimes it even complained the disc is bad. I tried all kinds of discs that this DVD player is supposed to play, but found that none of the discs were infact playing. As I am out of US now, I cannot avail the warranty on the product also now.

It might be a forgivable sin if one out of three are defective pieces. If all the pieces are defective, God knows why these guys are manufacturing this product.

Customer Review: Excellent features, but it is very unreliable!
Summary: 2 Stars

What's the point of all the features if your DVDs don't work!

Since the last 2 years, I have completely gone the way of such cheap small-brand players. The quality of picture and sound is usually comparable to the Sony, Panasonic, JVC and other big-name brands, the size is usually smaller (physical size), features usually surpass them and they often are compatible with the latest media (higher speed media.) In most cases they will play almost anything you throw at them - scratched DVDs, home DVDs on recordable media etc. Most of these small-brands are simply resellers with re-branded pieces manufactured by a handful of Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers, so they are very similar on the inside!

A friend of mine had bought a similar Cyberhome months back to take it to India (for PAL.) I believe his has worked fine. The one I ordered a few weeks back, however, had PROBLEMS playing many DVDs, including Silver ones (non-recordable) and home videos. All of those work perfectly on my favorite player - the Progressive Scan Yamakawa 238.

If you don't mind taking a chance, then go for it - you might get a good piece. Personally, I will stick to my Yamakawa, a small brand as well, but at least they manufacture their own stuff.
