Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of CyberHome CH-DVD 300S Progressive-Scan DVD Player , SilverCustomer Review: Great so far Summary: 5 Stars
This is only 1 week old so I can't speak for the reliability past the 90 day labor 1yr parts warrany. I got it at BBuy under $40. and did not open it until I checked the reviews. The reviews are only so so, 2.5 out of 5 stars so I was very reluctant to hook up but I decided to anyway and so far it works great. It plays nearly everything, and even some mp3s and wma music files that were made on my computer but will not play for some reason on the computer! I only tried a few dvds so far and they are fine. The unit has absolutely no noise that some other reviewers experienced, and it is room temperature as far as heat goes. It seems that either these machines work well or fairly poorly and may or may not keep running over time or much use. Since I will only use this occaisionally to play some dvds and check out picture cds I make on the computer, I will hope it holds up. The unit is very small, about 9" by 9", fits anywhere, and the audio out is great through my hi fi, only stereo-rca hookup so far, not multichannel or coax. It is progressive scan equipped so will work with hdtv when I get it. The video is fine, no jitters, skips or other mishaps through rca on my analog tv. For the performance and all the features included for the price I could say you could check it out for 30 days, and if it doesn't work return it easily if you got it at a local store.
Customer Review: Superb for the money Summary: 4 Stars
Ok, this is a $30 DVD player. $30.
You can spend a vast amount more than $30, and you will get a lot more DVD player for your money. It will do more, look nicer, have more features and likely be a lot more reliable.
If you are buying a $30 DVD player, you have to take this into account.
I bought this because it plays region free DVDs, and to buy a nicer player that has been hacked will typically set you back a couple of hundred. There are only a few that can be reset by software on the US market.
For my $30 I got composite video out, and coax digital audio out, meaning my picture quality is excellent and the sound is 5:1, and I can't tell the difference between coax and optical for the 5:1.
It plays my region 2 DVDs, meaning I don't have to rebuy all my UK DVDS (I'm an Expat from England, most of them you ca't even buy in the US).
I've had it over a year, and it is going strong. I've had more than $30 worth out of it already, so if it died tomorrow, I'd buy another right away. In fact, I'm thinking of buying another anyway for the bedroom.
The included remote is barely used, I programmed my multifunction for it instead.
If you need region free, highly recommended.
If you don't need region free, spend a bit more to get something nicer, or deal with the fact this is a cheap DVD player :)
Customer Review: IT IS REGION FREE - IT JUST TAKES A LITTLE RE-SETTING Summary: 5 Stars
A great little machine. Quite incredible value for less than $40US. I bought it for its PAL/NTSC conversion ability and it surpassed all my expectations. The converted images are superb. When you first buy it, the out-of-the-box settings are configured so that the machine can only handle Region 1 discs (if you bought it in North America). It only requires a simple re-setting of the Region code, which can be done using the remote.1. Switch player on, making sure that there's no disc in the tray. 2. Close tray. 3. Using the remote control, key in the following: MENU, 1, 9 (Note: just type in these three all in a row. Don't wait for anything to come up after just entering MENU because nothing will happen until you type in the 1 then the 9) 4. A menu will appear that shows the region option near the bottom of the screen. Arrow up or down to highlight the REGION title. 5. Press ENTER. The Region number setting will change to a blank entry "-" 6. Using the numbers keypad, type in the number 0 (this is the code for region free and will let you play discs from anywhere in the world without having to change the setting for each disc from a different region) 7. Press ENTER again to save the setting. 8. Press OPEN/CLOSE to switch off the menu. The door will open for you to put a disc in the tray.
Customer Review: The little DVD player that could ! Summary: 5 Stars
The Cyberhome dvd player seems to be a love it or have it device. People love it when it works and hate it when their unit is a lemon which seems to happen more then it should.
I have read people talking about freezing and disc read problems. Let me tell you that if your unit works as it should that this is not a problem. I have gone though about 70 Netflix rented disc many of them badly scratched with hardly a problem.
So it seems to be the luck of the draw. I say if you buy the unit and it does not work right have it replaced with another instead of instantly writing the unit off as junk. Chances are the next one you purchase will work just fine. I think the lemons people are seeing are a result of the huge demand of major retailers such as walmart and bestbuy.
If you look these things are popping up everywhere and for good reason. For the price this unit has an outstanding picture quality, small footprint, nice design and a great feature set usually not seen in dvd players twice it's price.
I am very quality conscious when it comes to the movie viewing experience and after 6 months of ownership I am very happy with the purchase !
Note : While the mini remote is neat, it requires a flat 3v instead of AA or AAA batteries. This can be annoying when you want to watch a movie and your remote stops working.
Customer Review: Do yourself a favor and spend a little more. Summary: 2 Stars
I owned one of these for about six months and it did work. It still works, and I'm giving it away due to the following annoyances that finally made me go out and spend the money that I should have spent in the first place.
Specifically, it locked up and froze on a certain TV series DVD set that my other DVD players would play just fine.
Also, when I tried to use the the S-Video output, long after the warranty expired, I found the output connection was loose and didn't work.
Unless you really want something unique to this machine, like its small footprint, my advice is to spend a little more up front.
I finally did this, and for twenty dollars more I got a low-end Panasonic unit with:
Vastly superior sound reproduction.
No locking up on my TV series DVD set mentioned earlier.
A display on the unit that tells me what the unit is doing using actualy numbers, letters, and so on. It even says "hello" when you power it up. You take those things for granted until you get a unit that has nothing but a green light for on and a red light for standby.
And, many more ways to adjust the output to suit my particular TV. My LCD TV rocks now!
So, I would have been much better off to spend a little more up front.
