Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of CyberHome CH-DVD 300S Progressive-Scan DVD Player , SilverCustomer Review: Region Hack Variation Summary: 5 Stars
I bought one of these units to have a backup to my Cyberhome 320, which has served me very well.
The three things I like most about the Cyberhome units are:
1) The audio playback volume can be controlled globally from the remote. This is helpful if you have the sound output of the player connected to a reciever/ amplifier and a TV simultaneously- the volume of the TV sound and the reciever sound can be adjusted in tandem - or, if the minimum volume setting on your TV is still too loud for watching DVD's or playing mp3's late at night (my plasma TV is like that, believe it or not) you can lower the volume to a level that won't disturb others.
2)Cyberhomes seem to be able to play any DVD that I can create on my PC. This was not so for a Sony unit I have that cost three times as much.
3)the region code of the units can be reset to zero. However, when I attempted to use the hack that worked on my 320 (the same hack described here in other reviews of this player) on the 300 it did not work. If you are getting the same results try this proceedure instead (it worked for me):
1) Close the disc tray with no disc inside. (This proceedure will not work with the disc drawer open.)
2) On the remote press "menu" then "1" and then "9". When I tried this no "no" symbol appeared as on my 320. A highlighted box should appear with the players current region setting displayed.
3) On the remote, press the green up or down buttons to change the code. I set mine to "0" - all regions.
4) On the remote, press "enter".
You're done!
I tested this with region 1, 2, and 4 discs and they all played fine.
I just got my 300 so I haven't had time to experience any of the problems (unit failres) that others have reported, but I've had my 320 for about two years and other than having to clean the lens once it has worked just fine. As far as I can tell the 300 and the 320 are identical except that the power indictor on the 300 is larger than the one on the 320, the screensaver looks slightly different and the region hacks are slightly different. I'm hoping that the 300 will perform as well as the 320 since these players have all the features I need.
Customer Review: Straight out of the box, it works fantastic for all formats. Summary: 5 Stars
I read several reviews on more websites than Amazon. Everyone was reporting the Black and White issue. When I brought my DVD player home and plugged it in, I attached the cords as if I was hooking up a VCR using the 3 plugin's in a row. "WRONG"! Put in a DVD and turned it on. Black and White... I found this amusing. However, when all else fails, read the instructions. I reconnected the player according to the instructions using the yellow video plug in the yellow connector and the red and white in the audio connectors and we have wonderful color and audio. I am very happy with the results of this player. Using the audio jacks I connected the dvd player to my stereo and all sound comes through our surround sound and/or stereo speakers.
This player supports all the formats listed on the box wonderfully. I have tried the following DVD's and CD's and all worked great.
Regular store bought DVD's.
Home burned DVD-R and DVD-RW's video's.
Nero Created SVD to includes chapter selection support
Data DVD and CD which contains mpg videos. Each mpg video plays one right after another or you can select from a menu index which one to play. This includes the mpg videos created on my digital camera and copied to a DVD as a storage medium.
DVD-R burned in my burner using home video in avi format
CD with 200 plus MP3's burned on it. Displays index for picking songs individually or you can select to play random. Since my DVD player is connected to a stereo through the audio outputs, it doubles as a device for listening to songs through the stereo speakers.
Plays regular music cd's.
We will see how this holds up over a period of time, but I have an APEX DVD player that is over 3 years old and still works just fine. It was one of the first APEX DVD players that was marketed for $80.
Follow up on the above DVD Player... It is almost 2 years old and I have yet to have one minute of trouble with it. I use it in the bedroom so the grand-kids can watch DVD's when the adults are watching TV. It has been used as much as any other Video player in the house and no problem. By the way... the Apex is still going strong also. No problems with either of them.
Customer Review: Rebate is a scam, performance is a sham - pissed off I AM! Summary: 1 Stars
First of all, when I was told of the promotion in late December 2005 I was sent a link that said it was $39.99 and a $20 mail in rebate would make it $19.99. When I went to the page it was $46.99 - so a difference of $7.00 but since I am trying out Amazon Prime I didn't have to pay shipping and in the end it's still a $27.00 DVD player right?
WRONG!
I got it, and immediately cut off the UPS symbol and pasted it to the rebate form. I looked for a place to paste the serial # (which was a sticker that I could not remove without ripping it) but there was none so I hand wrote it in. I packed it and mailed it with DELIVERY CONFIRMATION so they could not scam me... WRONG AGAIN! I get a postcard in the mail stating that my rebate was rejected because I didn't enclose the serial # from the box!
This was the biggest pile of horse$hit I've ever heard! I called their customer service department and after a LONG hold I got a snippy representative that pretty much told me TOUGH LUCK. I demanded her supervisor and she told me he was busy but that I would receive a phone call by that Friday. That call I made was on Tuesday January 31st and no phone call ever came.
I called again and was told the same thing. No response. I emailed a complaint and was told it was received and it would be looked into. No response. I was then told to email a different department. NO RESPONSE.
They are a sheisty company and when I told the girl that the sound often goes out, that it refuses to play some DVD's that are NEW FROM THE BOX I was told that I would need the original box to ship it to them! If I had the original box I would be able to try to get my rebate!
What a huge WASTE of $$. I was so angry with the customer service. Please, invest another $20 and buy something that will not only WORK properly but that you can have exchanged if need be and if there is a rebate you will actually see your $$ someday!!! [...]
I personally think all of us that got screwed should find a way to do something class action and put these jerks out of business!
Customer Review: Decent DVD player Summary: 3 Stars
Got this about a month ago and help out on my review to test it out..When I first got it I didn't realize it was so small....may have been looking at the bigger version...but no matter...small is nice. The first couple DVDs didn't play...when trying to read it a "?" appears...That can be frusturating..and then the tray wouldn't open to let me get the disc out! I had to "tap" it on the sides a couple times for it to pop open...the first fews weeks some DVDs didn't read or play for some reason...and some did..My guess the DVD has to be in pristine condition(no scratches or smudges of any kind on the DVD) or it won't play..or it seems. So give it a nice cleaning before hand for better luck... It's a bit noisy though, but I usually have the TV loud, so it drowns it out..:) I haven't tried playing any Cd's or or CD-Rs or any jpeg Cd's though..just use it for DVDs So to conclude...doesn't always play certain DVDs..for reasons that it may not be in good condition or whatever...I have a better, more expensive DVD player in the living room that seems to ignore scratches and whatnot...cause it's more powerful... But what do ya expect on a 50 dollar DVD player? :) A bit noisy at times...but over time you'll be able to ignore it.. It's very small, so that means portability..can take it any where..probably can fit it in a purse..:0 just needs a TV with a/v jacks..and plug it in..that's nice But be warned, if the DVD player can't read the disc, it may get stuck...if so, I just lightly tap in on the sides a few times until it opens..worked every time for me. And also there may be a feature to turn off the region code, so you can make it region free..I've done that, but haven't tried any over seas DVDs to see if it works though. But overall, when the DVDs do play the picture is nice, haven't seen any poor picture quality up to this point of any of the 12 DVD movies I've seen in it so far... So for being only 50 bucks(I paid 46 dollars), and its compact size..it's a pretty decent buy for your bedroom TV or whatever... Hope I didn't ramble on to much...lol
Customer Review: Excellent Unit, Low Price, and Multi-Region Capability! Summary: 5 Stars
Don't be frightened by the small-name brand and tiny size. This player works just fine. Good picture and good performance. I bought mine primarily because it can be programmed to play discs from other regions than Region 1 (North America's DVD region, for those who do not pay attention to such things.) It does this to perfection! I have had no problem with color shifts or distortion with PAL discs on my NTSC television, but be sure that you use the manual when you go through the "Setup" menu - you will need to make sure your player is set to NTSC, not PAL, if you live in North America and want PAL discs to play properly on your NTSC set.
Not familiar with the PAL/NTSC thing? It's like this - if an American buys a DVD from England, for example, he or she will find that it will not play in the average North American Region 1, NTSC DVD player because in England, DVDs and players are Region 2 and PAL TV format (North America has NTSC format TV broadcasts). They are incompatible and will not play. This player will play both PAL and NTSC DVDs, and will play them from any region!
There is one minor caveat - there are no instructions as to how to change regions included with the player (but can be found with an internet search).
Not to worry, though - this is how you do it:
1. With no disc in the tray, push "Menu" "1" "9" (ignoring the "No" symbol that appears on the upper left-hand corner of the screen).
2. A menu will appear that shows in highlight the region it is set to (almost certainly Region 1). Push the "Enter" button and the region number will change. You can set it to any region (1 through 6) or to Region 0, which means it will play PAL or NTSC DVDs from all 6 DVD regions!
3. Push the "Open/Close" button to close the menu, and you're done!
Enjoy!
