Customer Review: It's a battery backup
Summary: 4 Stars

I have used this brand for three years; three years on my home computer, and have just installed this unit on my church server. This will cut my "network issues" down by about 80%, based on user complaints. So far, it has performed flawlessly. However the battery inside the unit went bad on my home unit right after the warranty expired. I don't count this as a negative for the product, just the marketing. Batteries wear out. The new one was $22.00 (eBay). For this unit, I believe it is around $50.00 - $60.00. The software applet that comes with it is simple. It tests the unit (this is a big help for tracking battery wear), and has some simple tools to modify when the unit will shut down the computer; guaged by battery time left, or in absolute time. The options to set the shutdown time are set to only specific intervals (by minutes) in a drop down box, and does not allow for the time I would actually like to use.
Like my title says, hey, it,s a battery backup, nothing to get excited about. It takes a couple of years to get a valid opinion of one of these units.

Customer Review: Works fine, so far...
Summary: 4 Stars

Having had two of these for only a few days, here are some early impressions:

1. The smell some have reported is real. It dissipates within a day or two (from two devices). It'll make the room it's in smell like it was just painted. No biggie; perhaps it is just paint.

2. They come mostly charged -- about 95%. The production cycle to consumer time must be pretty short; you can't let the batteries sit around too long. That also explains the smell.

3. The sockets on the back, like most UPSs, are far too close to be useful for more than one or two wall warts. You'll have to plug in a power strip or cable extenders to get any real use out of it.

4. Compared to a similar VA/Watt APC we have, estimated run times are listed the same with the same loads, as they should be.

Have not installed software.

Tested functionality by flipping the switch on the power strip they're plugged in to. No issues with anything powering down.

We'll see how they hold up over the next few years...

Customer Review: Excellent Battery Backup System - But doesn't last long.
Summary: 3 Stars

We actually aren't using this for a computer or television. I use this battery backup to power my hospital bed I'm in due to an unfortunate medical situation. We purchased a small generator for long-term power outages but this is great for occasional "hiccups" in power because my bed requires a constant supply of power to keep the air-mattress inflated. When I have to move the bed up it can pull as much as 11 amps for a few seconds. Even while unplugged from power completely this battery backup was able to supply the power needed while my generator would struggle under the same load.

UPDATED REVIEW - It's been 5 months and the other day this has started "clicking" on and off from battery power to outlet power and back. We've tried shutting it off and reseting it and it doesn't help. The first day it did it for 10 minutes and stopped. Today it's been doing it again for 20 minutes. We've tried other outlets and the outlet power is steady and normal- I don't know if the battery is going bad or what. The screen reports everything normal.

Customer Review: Burning circuit board odor - in two units
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this product to replace an APC unit that was dead. When I got the product, it had a big dent in the side as if it had been dropped or hit with a hammer. I went ahead and plugged it in and it seemed to work but I never tested fully by shutting off power but it didn't matter. It had a burning circuit board odor that was intolerable. My eyes were burning and I returned and got another one. The second unit also had a similar odor but not as bad. Still unacceptable to me. I called the company and they said it shouldn't have an odor but both units did. I returned both and got an APC of comparable price. It doesn't have any overheated circuit board odor and is very quiet (it does have a strange sound that happens every 3 seconds or so but it's so hard to hear that it is not a problem).

If you are going to sit for long in a room with this battery unit, please check the odor and if your eyes start burning, you'll know why. Your health is more important than a battery. Get one you can live with.

Customer Review: Great for Entertainment systems too
Summary: 4 Stars

I already have a UPS for my Computers, but realized that a PS3 was a computer also so found this one and bought it. I have a 32" CRT TV, PS3, DSS, VCR/DVD Combo, CD deck, and 200W Receiver pluged into this. I also filter the Phone Hookup and COAX to the DSS.

It works just fine, I ran a test and it says 17 minutes of power with everything on. I know it won't last that long - they never do - but I won't be leaving the TV on or PS3 without being around either. This unit should save me from lightning and PS3 damage due to power fluctuation or loss during game saves.

I had a Cyberpower years ago for my old NT 4.0 workstation and it lasted maybe 3 years after many full discharges the batteries finally quit. I changed to an APC (coupon/discount) and have had to replace the batteries once in it. Overall, both units I have tested are good and have similar costs LONG TERM.

This being a new unit and at least 10 years newer, it may last better than the old one, if so the CyberPower is a winner.
