Customer Review: Does not work on all computer power supplies
Summary: 4 Stars

Got this UPS for 2 different computers. My wifes computer is an older Dell running Windows XP and I have a new Dell Studio XPS 435T running Vista x64. Plugged in both computers and both monitors and loaded the software that came with the unit. I ran a "self test" and my computer re-booted, my wifes computer ran just fine. Ok, switched plugs and same thing happened, I unplugged the UPS and same thing happeded, my computer re-booted and the older XP ran just fine.

Emailed Cyberpower about this and they did get right back to me with this response,

"The power supply in the XPS 435T has good and bad attributes. The good news is the power supply is extremely energy efficient and uses a PFC power supply design. The bad news is that PFC power supply designs will not accept the type of power supplied by a traditional UPS. In order to support the XPS 435T with a UPS you need a UPS that supplies power with a true sine wave form. Any of our Smart Application Series UPS would work"

Ok, so it's my bad that I didn't know I needed a "true sine wave form" UPS for my new computer, but some where, somehow, someone should have warned people about this little issue.

Other than that little issue, it works great on my wifes computer.

Customer Review: Cyberpower CP1500AVR - Very Bad Smell
Summary: 3 Stars

The UPS is quiet, the software is full of features, it's battery backup actually lasts far longer than expected.

The only problem I do have and it's unplesant, even if it's only temporary, is that the unit smells soo toxic that I can't even be around it. From what I have read online and been told in person this smell is not toxic but it is very unpleasant to some people. It is sometimes associated with the slight buring of plasitc/fresh glue etc. from a new machine with enough built in heating capacity. Over time the smell should go away.

Straight out of the box, without even turning it on I had to quarentine it for 3 weeks the smell was so bad. I mean really bad and powerfull. Maybe it was just the way it was manufactured/packaged. I have only experienced this in a few other cases but none of them had to be quarentined this long.

On the whole I would say this UPS has a lot going for it but be warned that you might have to leave it airing in a back room, for a while, before you start using it. From what I have read online it seems to be a recuring theme that even competing products have to deal with but at least with my purchase order the smell just blew me out of the room, literally.

Customer Review: Good buy, although...

I really like this unit, having shied away from my preferred APC brand because of the reviews of the heavy-duty ones that my gaming computer requires. The reviews said "cheapened" and "noisy." This unit is neither, the power-managing software is cool--but I'm not sure that it does anything that Windows won't do besides having another program running in the background. I have one very major problem with this unit and so will you if you use anything that connects via an adaptor or anything but a three-prong plug. The outlets are so jammed together and the access is so inconvenient that this is effectively a four-outlet unit...think wall-plate outlets and you get an idea. Having a functional APC UPS unit is all that saved me from needing two of these and forget about attaching a surge-protector to one of the outlets for extra functionality. That voids the warranty and defeats the purpose of both. I would buy this one again because of the superior specs, but if I didn't have a second unit then I'd buy two. Two at the current price would be only a little more than what I was looking at from APC and this unit has received no bad reviews concerning quality and noise. I don't detect ANY noise and that's a good thing.

Customer Review: 120V +/- 5% -- NOT!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is my first review on amazon and I wish I could say that a great product experience prompted it but I can't.

The UPS had quite a few good reviews so I had high hopes. It came quickly and the box was in good shape. I hooked it up and played with it - the display was nice and seemed to give useful information. I was at 14% load, had 98% charge, and had 34 minutes of battery time.

I was about to leave it and call it good but, what the heck, I pulled the plug. To my horror my monitor blanked. But it still had power. I plugged it back in. The display came back and the computer was still working. I did it again with the same result. So I went and found my multitester, and saw the voltage drop to mid 80s on unplugging it. I looked at the maunual and the specs were 120V +/- 5% on battery power. Try +/- 25% (on only 14% load).

That seemed pretty bad and at that point I had decided to return it as it was obviously defective but that wasn't what really prompted this review. It was looking back at the pretty display and seeing the claim that it was currently outputting 118V while my tester showed 85V. Needless to say, I think something a little rotten is going on...

Customer Review: A Very Solid Mid-Priced Power Solution
Summary: 5 Stars

A very well-priced power-conditioning UPS. I run a fairly high end rig:

Intel E8500 3.16GHz oc'd to 3.8GHz
8GB DDR2800 OCZRam
3 WD Black 750GB HDD
2 EVGA GTX260 core216 Graphics Cards
LG Blu-Ray DVD + HP DVD-Writer
Thermaltake Tt 750W E80+ SLI Certified Power Supply.

Under full load, this rig draws .405Kw which translates to about 9 minutes of backup time while at full draw. This is enough to get through most power dips, spikes, and outages in our area, unless there's a severe storm, and at that rate, it's still enough time for the software to shut the rig down to prevent damage or data loss.

The power conditioning seems to be fairly consistent, outputting a steady 116vac, no matter how hard I push this thing. That, in itself, makes this unit worth the cost. The 9 minutes of backup time under full load is just a bonus.

I will say, however, the ONLY thing plugged into this unit is the computer itself. The monitors / Logitech z5500s and Workforce40 printer are plugged into a separate, smaller UPS.

For systems using 800W+ power supplies, you'll likely need to look at a higher VA/W rated UPS.
