Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cyber Acoustics Portable Digital Docking Speaker for iPod (Black)Customer Review: Comparison Review Summary: 5 Stars
Over the last year, I've purchased three different IPOD docks/speakers. They were
- JBL On Stage 400P
- Cyber Acoustics Portable digital docking speaker
- Logitech S715i Rechargeable Speaker
They have all met a different requirement that I had, and done it well. In general the overall reviews of these products is right on the mark. Let me compare and contrast my thoughts on each of these:
- JBL On Stage 400P
Definitely the big winner when it comes to sound. This unit has extremely clear sound from the bass all the way through to the treble. As many have noted, the amount of bass is amazing from such a little unit. It can fill your whole house with music, while at the same time sounds really nice at extremely low volume (like on a night stand). Sounding clean, crisp and clear at all volume levels shows the quality of the product. The spaciousness of the sound is also very nice, the music doesn't obviously appear to be coming from the unit. The price seems appropriate for the quality of the sound. I've had the BOSE sound docks and this unit is very comparable at a much better price.
My complaints are purely cosmetic. The cord and power converter are quite clunky and it is a little fussy with my ITouch. The touch works, but occasionally complains about not being compatible. I also note that it takes a few (maybe 10 seconds) to sometimes recognize that the ipod is playing. Also, the remote is versatile, but works poorly from any distance.
- Logitech S715i Rechargeable Speaker
This unit is half the price of the above JBL and it is portable with a built-in battery. I think for the money this is again one of the best units available. Sound-wise, it is no comparison to the JBL, the sound is very warm and muddy. Plenty of base, but the unit lacks the crispness throughout the entire range. It does provide nearly the same sound quantity as the JBL, i.e. fairly house filling. As a reasonable, portable unit is does very well - just don't think you will get the same sound as the JBL (of course, it is half the price).
The sound is my only complaint. I actually think the cosmetics and functionality of the unit are great. The remote works very well, build quality is nice, the Ipod integration is absolutely flawless. No waits, not fuss; the unit goes into standby when the music is stopped and starts right up when you start it again. The IPod functionality is better than the JBL.

This little guy is half the price of the above Logitech. I actually think this unit is the test sounding unit, if price is the only yardstick. This unit has a much cleaner and crisp sound than the Logitech, but the bass is very lacking when you start to push the volume as all. In fact, the bass will start to distort if you try and push the sound volume. This is a room filling unit, not a house filling unit. To be clear, this unit still doesn't match the JBL at any volume (it shouldn't for the price), but at very low volumes, I think is pretty well matches the Logitech. If however, you want to listen to a unit anywhere but right next to you, the Logitech becomes the clear winner. Like the logitech, this one is portable (not rechargeable)and a nice small package. It integrates quite will with all three of my IPods (actually they all do, only the JBL makes my touch complain - I also have an IPod classic and nano). For something on your desk, this unit's sound and price cannot be beat.
In summary, you do get what you pay for in these units. The JBL is like a stationary sound system that is packaged in a very small space. Great sound. The Logitech has the power of the JBL, but not the clarity. The Cyber Acoustics has nice clarity, without any real punch. All three deliver in different ways and at different price levels.
You won't go wrong with any of these units.
