After spending long hours comparing the differences between the 30GB Apple iPod and the 30GB Creative Zen, I ultimately chose the Zen. I had originally owned the iPod Mini and was wary of changing companies, as I had found no faults in my iPod Mini, except for the lack of battery life and small storage space. After researching, I came to the conclusion that both the 30GB iPod and the 30GB Zen were similar. The prices were within $20 of each other, each had the qualities I was looking for (the Zen being a little bigger in size), and each would hold all my music. But the Zen had the added benefits of a microphone, radio, and personalized background options that iPod didn't offer. And for $20 cheaper. I ended up buying the Zen and at first was regretting that decision. The iPod seemed easier to navigate and had an easier computer program. But as I've gotten used to it, the Zen has proven to be extremely easy to function, although I have yet to master the program on the computer. The radio is an added bonus, the organization of the Zen is excellent, I can now fit all 3000 of my songs, plus music videos, TV shows, and movies, and the battery life has lasted up to 14 hours, as the advertisement promised. My only complaint about the item would be it's spontaneity in deciding to freeze. In it's first 2 weeks, my Zen froze 3 times without warning or reason. Although it is easy to reset (simply use a paperclip or safety pin to press the reset button on the bottom of the player), I was surprised about the consistency of it. My husband has the iPod. I got the Creative Zen awhile back because he was experiencing so many limitations with his iPod.
I am SO glad I got the Creative Zen.
What's better in the iPod?
- thinner, more elegant appearance
- more cool accesories like covers, docks, cases, etc.
What's better in Zen?
- Voice Recorder's awesome! and microphone
- FM tuner
- Almost any format if music or video file, very FLEXIBLE!!!
- HUGE 30GB hard-drive can really be used as a flash drive!!! YES!
- Transport files to and from work using it as a flash drive
- You don't need to use iTunes
- Don't need iTunes to download photos to my Creative Zen
I have need to carry around over 500 photos and update them frequently. I needed a device more for photos than music, but wanted music too. Creative Zen does the job. And I have my favorite CD's loaded. Using my USB cable, I am able to bring files back and forth from work on it. Ah, if it only had Wi-Fi!
Wishlist:
- I wish it had an easy organizer - I'd toss my Palm T/X.
- I wish it had Wi-Fi - again, I wouldn't need the Palm T/X.
Creative Zen is the way to escape from the Apple iPod prison of iTunes. It's a little thicker than my husband's 30GB iPod, but it feels more comfortable in my hand. iPod's navigator wheel is a little easier to use.
My husband has a Palm LifeDrive and is wishing the Creative Zen could replace its functions so he could toss it.

The device is great as a music player, sound output can get real loud with the given ear phones. Screen is vivid, bright and video quality is good, however plastic tends to scratch easily. Player hangs if MP3 song is corrupt and only way to get around is to reset it let battery run down.
Player starts automatically when connected to USB port, did not charge from my dell D610 Laptop though.Can use any DC convertor rated at 2Amps - 5 V and having the yellow ended connector (sony?!)with inside positive. Mic recording quality is great and can be used as a dictaphone. Connects to TV using Zen video cable or odinary audio video cable with jack modified as follows:
Identify and mark the three wires near the jack end as WHITE,YELLOW and RED.Then cut the cable close to the Jack end. rejoin as follows (each wire has an uninsulated wire called ground and a thin insulated wire called Hot).

RED of all 3 wire
ground of all 3 Hot
WHITE Hot
YELLOW Hot
User interface is great, but takes a while to get used to. when Video cable is connected the Display blanks out and gets transfered to TV screen!!!.

OO! Zen Vision M has FM Radio, Voice Recorder, and a better screen the iPod?!?!! WHAT?! It's 35 bucks less than iPod?! Duh! I'ma get ZEN!
Product came in two days. YAY!
Loaded 2500+ songs from Windows Media Player 11 and URGE onto the Zen. Sweet! 3 hours of song syncing and I'm set! Amazing sound quality with Bass Booster on and V-MODA Bass Freq headphones. Way better than my friend's iPod (black 30gb)
Battery Life is fine. Seriously, when do you need 15 hours of playback without charging?
With some DVD ripping software, I've gotten DVD's onto this guy. Honestly, the screen size is fine for movies. The screen is way better than the iPod; I compared Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest with my Zen and my friend's iPod. Pretty awesome difference in favor of the ZEN VISION M! The FM Radio is great, and voice recording is a great for "Note To Self"'s. I'm just so totally bummed I didn't get the 60GB ZEN VISION M; I've loaded up these 30 gigs already! Oh well, still an AMAZING value, I highly recommend for any WINDOWS over iPod. ZEN DOES NOT WORK WITH MAC! Just a note =]

Yo, buy a case. The front gets a little scratched up during everyday use. Mhmm...

I'm no MP3 player buff but I did a lot of research before I bought this and I can say that I am absolutely happy with my purchase. I cannot recommend this enough to people who aren't too fond of IPod's. I've always been a Creative Labs fan and really love their sound cards and the audio quality of this player is great. I put all of my CD's on this thing and have about 10 GB's left. The thing I don't like about IPod is that whole copyrighted/protected music thing. Whenever I rip music to my hard drive I always want it to be MP3. Less snags y'know. I like things to be simple because when your ripping your entire CD collection to your hard drive it should be as painless as possible. Creative makes it easy enough to do that too. I don't use it hardly at all for videos. I have put movies on it before but the whole process takes too long. It has nothing to do with Creative though. I bet if you have a lot of YOUTUBE stuff it would work great. The screen on this little thing is awesome too. I wish there were more downloadable content for it though so that you could have more choices to customize it. but if you want you could put your own photos as the background. And the photos look terrific on this too by the way. I love how it will sycnhronize your music on your hard drive with the player itself too. There's just too many thing I like about this player to sit here and type it all.
