Customer Review: Enjoy a cool drink to soothe your noise-induced headache

Even after reading the reviews posted here I still asked my wife for this item as a holiday present. As advertised, it will in fact chill a beverage. That is the good news. The reality, however, is a bit more disappointing. It works better at keeping a chilled beverage cool than transforming a 12 ounce beverage into a frosty one. It's simply not very efficient at the latter task. Give it enough time it will chill your room temperature can of soda into a cool drink. Cool enough that, if not for the other defect noted below, it would hold its place of honor next to my keyboard and mouse.
I must disclose that I connected it to my office's PC, and therefore I cannot vouch for a 2.0 USB connection. It is possible that I'm using a 1.1 connection and this omission accounts for the marginal but still useful performance. [....]. Of course performance might be improved by a verified 2.0 connection but that would require more investigation than I'm willing to give.
Why then am I writing this review? Regardless of what connection I am using, the critical design flaw is the fan noise. It was as if the Coolitsystem engineers had no conception that end users might actually use this item close to themselves. The little bastard churns out a constant thrum. I even tried to place it on the ground beneath my desk to minimize the noise but it did not help. So for you laptop users, worry no longer about fan noise from your computer because this thing will surely drown it out. I'm guessing that the size of the unit (although bigger than you might expect or desire) requires a small fan that must spin at a higher velocity and this fact accounts for the unpleasant thrum.
Honestly, if I could tame the noise I would fully endorse the product despite its limitations. I will keep it plugged in for another week to see if my brain can mentally block the noise but I doubt it will pass this last ditch effort and it will find a home in a dark corner of my closet reserved for antiquated or flawed gizmos.
